The effects we are creating are simple enough to be able to follow along and understand the process, yet challenging for a total newbie like me, which is what I was searching for. The fact that it is for UE4 doesn't bother me, because it added another layer of challenge to try and solve the mismatch in versions myself. Also, some people complain about the accent of the instructor, but I didn't find any issue with it. The explanations are clear, he shows his way of work, but you can totally do your own. I highly recommend this course for total newbies in the VFX area .... like me.

As someone with little to no VFX knowledge, this was by far the most helpful course I could have taken. Not only did I learn a ton about Niagra and Unreal blueprints, but also creating textures and meshes. I plan to continue down this path and I truly believe this has created a solid foundation for the journey ahead! This was recorded with a previous version of Unreal Engine. You can choose to use the same version as the course, although I think choosing the newest version (5.3) aided in learning the engine. With a little messing around or quick google search you can figure out what has changed.

Pretty cool course. There is only 2 down sides of this course that I hope you could update in the near future: 1. The engine version using in the tutorial are quite outdate. It could be more easier to follow if it fit with the newest version nowadays. 2. At the beginning, base on the preview video, I though it gonna be more than just 2 effect tutorial. Maybe you need to add more clear information what is inside your course so people could know better before they start. Anw, this is a good starting point for people to jump in this VFX field. Big thank!

I'm really torn about this course, because I enjoyed it and the instructor certainly possesses advanced knowledge and knows how to convey it, but the course has one giant flaw, it is incomplete. You will learn how to make materials and use the Niagara system, but that's only the peak of the iceberg, to make all those effects even work you need to set them up in unreal via the Blueprints system, which is not properly discussed, ready Blueprints are provided to you by the instructor, then briefly explained and forgotten, despite the fact that they play a MAJOR role in vfx creation. This course needs a whole another chapted dedicated purely to them to make it good. To put it simply, after finishing this course you will not be able to open a new project in unreal and create your own vfx from scratch if you didn't have the knowledge of Blueprints beforehand.

This course is amazing! I really like it. I have no experience with VXF before and I was able to follow pretty well and learn a lot of things. It is a highly recommended course for beginners. However, as pointed out by some other comments, there are indeed a little bit of repetition in the second half of the course, and it would be nicer if the instructor could put in more different modules and show more functionalities from the Niagara particle system.

It was a great learning experience and taught by a passionate teacher.

This guy really knows what he's doing. He takes you step by step thru the basics.
One note of caution, if you're not using Photoshop and substituting it for something like Gimp and you're totally new to this, get ready for a good bit of Google-ing. Not a ton, but enough to be slightly frustrating. If you know what you're doing there, don't worry, you'll be fine.
All in all, I was glad to have this course recommended to me. Enjoy!

Halfway through the course and I already feel much more comfortable with sketching VFX ideas and then trying to reproduce them with Niagara in UE4.

By Thomas Goodfellow on 10/19/2020

This was a wonderful starting place for vfx fundamentals as well as a good primer on the UE4 Niagara system.

I had a small amount of experience with creating VFX but not with unreal engine before starting this course. The content of the course is perfect. Starting right from scratch makes it much easier to understand the entire process of creating VFX. The Blueprints for the project are very quickly glanced over though if you have little to no experience with blueprints it makes little sense. Providing those resources is a big help. some constructive feedback is that more often than not, you will explain what we need to create a certain behaviour, E.G 'We want to convert this to a float and then turn it to a curve'. however you will complete this action quickly and not give much information on where to carry out this change. I found my self pausing and going back often as you progressed quickly. Overall really good course content and information.

I think the technical level and pacing is good, a bit slow for me but I realize I learn these things quickly. My only issue to far is the English pronunciation. But for the most part I get used to it. Although at some point it had me confused for a while when the lecturer kept saying "models" when he was referring to "modules".
