Our take
Based on the ratings of 687 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a sequel course, not a starting point. David Nixon picks up where his beginner Unreal Engine course leaves off and spends 18.9 hours across four sections: materials and textures, landscapes and open worlds, skeletal meshes and animation, and intermediate blueprints. The syllabus assumes students already know projects, levels, actors, meshes and basic blueprints, and it leans hard into explaining what each setting and node actually does rather than having students follow along building one finished game.
Reviewers consistently praise the depth: several say it's the first course they've written a comment for, and they like that David Nixon explains why a node or setting matters instead of just saying what to click. One reviewer singles out his easy, accent-free pace. The complaints cluster around structure. Some call it one long lecture rather than a tutorial, say it over-explains simple actions like mouse clicks, and wish there were more hands-on practice or a real project tying the sections together. A few felt some material stayed beginner-level despite the 'intermediate' label.
At 101 lectures with no coding exercises or quizzes, this rewards someone who learns well by listening and already has projects of their own to apply the concepts to. It sits well next to broader beginner-to-advanced UE5 courses as the narrower, deeper option for four specific topics. Skip it if you want a guided project from scratch; take it if you've outgrown beginner content and want the mechanics explained properly.
Pros
- Reviewers say it explains why settings and nodes work, not just what to click
- One reviewer highlights the instructor's clear, easy-to-follow pace
- Deep, focused sections on materials, landscapes, animation and blueprints
- Updated as recently as June 2025, so tooling stays current
Cons
- Structured as one long lecture series, not a follow-along project
- Some reviewers say it over-explains basic actions like mouse clicks
- Little hands-on practice; no coding exercises, quizzes or example projects
It's not just a follow-along course; it's a course that gives you the knowledge in digestible chunks, taught in a very engaging way.
Fits students who already handle projects, levels, meshes and basic blueprints, not true beginners.

Course Description
Learn how to make video games with Unreal Engine 5. If you’ve already learned the basics of Unreal Engine and are eager to learn more, this is the course for you. For monetary reasons, almost all courses are beginner’s courses. This course is for those who have been desperately seeking something more advanced on Unreal Engine. Continue your journey towards being a professional video game developer with Unreal Engine 5: Intermediate Course.
Learn How to Make Video Games with this Unreal Engine 5 Course for Intermediate Game Developers
Continue your game dev studies with one of the most up-to-date Unreal Engine courses available. This course is regularly updated so that it will always cover one of the most recent versions of Unreal Engine 5.
I also spent a great deal of time before the course was first published to plan out all the lessons so that:
nothing is covered without the prerequisite knowledge needed being covered first
lectures and sections are self-contained without jumping from topic to topic
In other words, I strived to structure the course in the “ideal” order, in order to reduce confusion to a minimum. At this point in your studies, you should understand how difficult it is to achieve goals 1 and 2 at the same time, as so many various topics are closely interrelated, so I’m very proud of what I was able to accomplish with this course.
Learn How to Be a Professional Video Game Developer Using Unreal Engine
This course was designed for those who are looking for a professional path of study for Unreal Engine 5. This might not line up with your goals. If you’re just looking to play around a bit, then you may not like the attention to detail. But if you’re interested in getting as good as possible, I’ve designed this course to give you what the others won’t.
This course covers the details that other courses skip, which causes confusion when trying to learn more advanced topics. By the end you should have a thorough understanding of intermediate concepts of Unreal Engine and be fully prepared to move on to more advanced topics.
Intermediate-Level Game Design Concepts
If you are familiar with, at a basic level, concepts such as Projects, Levels, Actors, Meshes, Collisions, and Blueprints, then you are fully prepared to take this course.
The course will cover the following topics in thorough detail:

I've bought many 4-5 star Unreal Engine courses, and this one is by far the best regarding the depth of the explanations. It's not just a follow-along course; it's a course that gives you the knowledge in digestible chunks, taught in a very engaging way. Also, this is the first time I've ever taken the time to write a comment. That should tell you something about how valuable I find this course. And yes, even if you have ADHD, this course is especially great!

Fantastic learning material! Quick and to-the-point, yet comprehensive. I'm not here to learn how to make a video game from scratch, so I don't need videos that let me "make 5 of your own games!" I'm here to learn about materials, so the Materials and Textures section focusing on Materials without all the extraneous details associated with making a game is FANTASTIC! Also I really like listening to the instructor talk. He doesn't have any difficult-to-understand accent, and he goes a very reasonable pace. I'm very happy with this purchase.

The instructor was engaging and very well-versed in the material he covered in the course, and he went at a speed that benefitted my knowledge of Unreal Engine, as well as giving me insight into things I already knew. The instructor was also entertaining, and reasonably comical in certain portions of the course to maintain interest, and never faulted in his presentation of the information. I will be referring to his lessons often in the upcoming future while I develop my projects, and look forward to seeing more of his content as it becomes available.

A great addition to the beginner course. Bit more theoretical and less hands-on (not exactly a problem though). There are some things which are annoying, and if fixed the course would be a 5/5 for me: --- Landscapes and Open Worlds section --- 1.) Data layers lecture - There is no "Get Data Layer Manager" node in the level blueprint, at least not anymore. Lecture needs an update. Workaround can be found in Q/A. 2.) Landscape Grass Part 1 lecture - Quixel is not working anymore as described in the lecture. Now we have Fab. Thus following along by doing is not possible and / or pretty frustrating. 3.) Level Instances lecture - Since the course already has material that needs to be downloaded to follow along with the lectures it would be a nice touch to have the "House" level / asset(s) included in there. --- General --- 4.) In my opinion a tutorial project / demo game (just like in the beginner course) would crown the learning experience and students would walk away even more satisfied. Thank you David!

I recently completed this course on Udemy, and overall, I was quite impressed. The curriculum was well-scripted and packed with insightful explanations that helped me understand the material deeply. However, there were moments when the content felt a bit too theoretical, and I would have appreciated more opportunities for hands-on, practical application. Despite this, it was a valuable learning experience, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a solid foundation in the subject.

I love this course! Everything was well-structured and explained. I like the style of lectures which teach to use Unreal Engine as instrument for personal purposes, not just follow step-by-step tutorial as it often happens to be. I felt like I read the documentation of Unreal Engine in interactive way. I definitely need the same courses on Advanced topics and especially on C++ within Unreal. However, the course has a giant lack of interactivity (e.g. interesting tasks and problems for implementing knowledge by my own with further explananions how to solve the problem).

I thought the course was great! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that I wish that the Blueprints section (section 4), had as much step by step detail as I felt the first three sections (Materials, Landscapes, Animations) did. The parts where the instructor took the time to talk through the flow from one node to the next helped me understand and retain the information, but there were multiple instances where the explanation of the node usage/flow wasn't as detailed. In these instances I understood the general idea of the programming, but was wishing that I understood more of what the node flows the instructor made were telling the engine to do. Like "when this node's pin gets input, it fires and looks for the object reference attached to the blue pin, and then outputs that referenced object to the next node." etc etc. Step by step. There was some lectures in the Blueprints section where the explanations were pretty thorough, but a good amount where I kept rewinding the videos and pausing to see if I could internalize what it was the blueprint was doing. Just by adding more thorough explanations in there, and I think the course would be 5 stars! Either way definitely worth the money and time, and I feel I learned a lot! Thanks David !

This review is for people that learn how I learn. On the first time listening you will have a great understanding of how to move around the menu and get used to the terminalogy he's speaking in, but the golden ticket is to watch it more than once. When you understand the terminalogy from the first time and focus on WHY he's doing what he's doing the second time, you start to understand how you would use what he's teaching for your own project. The first and even the second listen through can be overwhelming, but if you watch these videos more than once, you can use this knowledge to help you create your own work of art.

The long version - "Very good. I have been using Unreal for 3 years now and although I did know most of the stuff listed here already I still think it was worth it to learn a few extra things. Explanations were generally very good. Though I would have liked to see a few more useful real world examples in the skeletal meshes and animations section that covered other animation topics like the more modern rigging tools. Definitely would reccomend." The short version - "If it's easily available on youtube please do not make a tutorial explaining that topic." I hope you do more courses in the future.

This is quite likely the best online training I've ever done. The level of detail is perfect, providing enough information to get you productive in all the topics presented, while not overwhelming you with esoteric things you likely won't need. The topics covered are core elements of the system that everyone is going to need to use at some point, so that's another good feature of the course. Finally, the presentation is polished and professional and in my opinion never boring, which is hard to acheive in these kinds of videos. I highly recommend this class and it's predecessor to anyone just learning Unreal 5. I now feel that I have a strong grasp of the fundamental concepts of development with Unreal, and I also feel confident in pursuing more in depth learning on my own as well.
