Our take

Based on the ratings of 5,506 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a free, one-hour Udemy course from Daniel White, better known as Dansky on YouTube. The syllabus shows 16 short lessons, each labelled on its own so it's easy to jump back to a single trick later. They cover basic and advanced shapes, paths and imagery, a few text treatments, and some effects. The audience list is honest: it's meant for designers who already know the basic tools and palettes. Plenty of true beginners take it anyway, and most of them come away happy, but it is not a ground-up introduction to the program.

Reviewers keep using the same words: simple, well explained, makes sense. Students like White's calm, soothing voice, and several beginners say the basics were explained well. The rating breakdown backs that up, with about 3,200 five-star and 1,600 four-star reviews out of 5,506. The complaints are mild. One reviewer wanted a quick tour of where the tools and palettes live before starting, because White moves fast and it was sometimes hard to spot which panel he had opened. Another notes it is really only useful for beginners, which is fair for a tips course this short.

It costs nothing, was refreshed in January 2025, and takes an hour. There are no quizzes, exercises, or certificate, so treat it as a taster rather than a credential. Next to the other Illustrator courses on this page, it works well as a warm-up or a quick check of whether the program clicks before committing to something bigger. Anyone with the basics and a spare lunch break should find it an easy yes.

Best forDesigners who already know the basic Illustrator tools and want an hour of shape, path, and text tricks they can revisit one at a time.
Skip it ifYou've never opened Illustrator, or you want structured projects, exercises, and a certificate at the end.

Pros

  • Free, and just under an hour, so it fits in a single sitting
  • Each of the 16 tricks is a labelled standalone lesson, easy to revisit later
  • Students praise the calm, clear narration and simple explanations
  • Updated in January 2025 despite dating back to 2015

Cons

  • No tour of the tools and palettes first; one reviewer struggled to find what he was using
  • Moves quickly, and there are no exercises, quizzes, or certificate
  • Only 16 tips, so experienced Illustrator users will find little new
i love the way this guy explains things. super simple and he just makes sense, thankyou
Jane Dicka, a student

Listed as all levels, but the requirements assume basic tool and palette knowledge; total newcomers should watch an intro first.

It was a good intro to Illustrator. I would suggest providing an overview of the tools and palettes and where they are located before getting started. He goes a little fast but I would hit pause and repeat a few times. Sometimes it was hard to find the palette or tool he was using. Otherwise, he did a great job and has a nice soothing voice to listen to.

I completed this course in 3 days with some revision practice. The course tutor is very specific in instructions and very useful tips are very well explained. I do recommend this course. Please note that one needs to have very basic prior knowledge of AI.

This is very helpful course for the beginners like me. It's very well done explained, clear and right on point. I hope there is another course like this, but for next level, for us who already have learned this level and are ready for the next. Overall great experience :)

I have to pause a lot but it is easy to follow along. I would suggest for the first course, however, that you guide the user with setting up their workspace. I had to pause to figure out what workspace you were using and which windows you had up.

Really great introductory course. He explained everything he was doing throughout very well and was straight to the point. You learn a lot of great tips and techniques in each video, which for a beginner like myself was excellent! Thanks a lot for providing this free course!!

The role of the Illustrator was interesting and interesting and full of valuable information but lacked the examples of life and exercises attached to the explanation so that we can demand from the response to understand better and also explanation was not arranged in the degree of the explanation was not clear and not clear but when I see him for the time after another absorbed more and wanted more development Thank you very much for everything.

I'm relatively new to Illustrator. Took this course (for free) to learn more about the tool. I liked several of the tips and tricks. Main suggestion: the content isn't all that exciting. Useful yes, but a bit too simplistic. Think it would be more enjoyable if all the tips and tricks led to a final image. It currently feels rather random. Overall I like the course and think it is worth taking given that it is free. Thanks for the course!

I'm a novice user, and found this exactly on my level. It was easy to follow, reinforced things I'd already seen, minimal amounts of dead air, engaging presentation... I especially liked the way he narrated what he was doing, eg every time he made a perfect circle he told me that he was also holding the alt key. Well done, Daniel. I'll be looking for more of your work.
