Our take
Based on the ratings of 6,183 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2020. No course pays to be reviewed.
A free, hour-long overview of what UX is, what UX professionals actually do, and what skills the job asks for. Susan Weinschenk, a psychologist who consults on product design, delivers seven lectures across three sections with four quizzes. There are no tools, no Figma, no prototypes, just principles, roles, process and the obstacles that get in the way. It suits people who are curious about the field and want to know what it is before committing to a longer course, or working designers who want a quick check of how their skills line up with what the job expects.
With about 76,000 students and more than 6,000 reviews, the rating sits at 4.5, and over 80 percent of ratings are four or five stars. Reviewers like how clearly the instructor explains the main points, and two students in HCI classes say it lines up well with what they are being taught. The complaints are consistent. Low-star reviews call it too general and too theoretical, with one German reviewer wanting to know what a UX designer's working day looks like rather than the instructor's take on terminology. One reviewer finds the quizzes poorly structured, and one never got a certificate, which is expected since the course does not offer one.
It's free, it was last updated in April 2020, and the ideas in it have not aged much, since there is no software to go stale. Compared with the Figma and Adobe XD courses it sits beside, this one teaches nothing hands-on. Treat it as a primer to watch over lunch before choosing a paid, tool-based course, not as training that gets anyone to a portfolio. For that purpose it does its job.
Pros
- Free and only about 65 minutes, so it costs nothing but a lunch break to find out whether UX interests you.
- Reviewers say the instructor explains the main points clearly and in a logical sequence.
- Covers roles, skills and process, which students in HCI classes say matches their coursework.
- Four quizzes check that the ideas stuck before moving on.
Cons
- Too general and theoretical for some; low-star reviews wanted a picture of a UX designer's working day.
- No tools, no projects, no certificate, and the last update was April 2020.
- One reviewer found the quiz questions poorly structured.
It was a great introductory course to understand the basics of UX Design.
Genuinely beginner, though it assumes a passing familiarity with design and an interest in working in or with UX.

Susan Weinschenk, Ph.D.
I have a Ph.D. in Psychology and decades of experience as a behavioral scientist, applying psychology to the design of digital products. I'm a consultant to Fortune 1000 companies, start-ups, and educational and government organizations.
A client once referred to me as "The Brain Lady", and it stuck. Probably because I like to teach and consult about brain science.
I'm currently the Founder and Principal of The Team W. I consult, coach, teach, and speak about behavioral science, brain science, psychology, design, innovation, and user experience. I've been lucky enough to travel around the world as a keynote speaker.
I am also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Wisconsin.
My clients include Disney, Amazon, The Mayo Clinic, Zappos, the Federal Trade Commission (USA), and the European Commission.
I like to write books, including: 100 Things Every Designer Needs To Know About People, How To Get People To Do Stuff, 100 Things Every Presenter Needs To Know About People, and Neuro Web Design: What makes them click? I blog at my own website and I blog for Psychology Today.
My work over the years has included the design of websites, software, medical devices, TV ads, physical devices, experiences, and physical spaces to make them persuasive, usable and motivating.

The course was good; it relates to what I am being taught in Human-Computer Interaction. Would recommend it to beginners in the field of UI/UX design
By Daniel Jakobs on 4/18/2026
By Muhammad Idrees on 3/27/2026
it was a good match but not very good, how the quiz are done, the structure of the question and answer. What make it a good match is how the tutor is teaching
By Sebastian Paternostro on 3/12/2026
This was my first course by Susan. She is amazing: Explains well, easy to follow and most importantly, you can tell she knows what she's talking about. Thank you for making this introductory course free for all.
By Madhuri Thombare on 2/24/2026
Yes, this is a really good course and clearly states what the job is and the expectations from the experience designers.
By Keneth Gonzalez on 1/12/2026
