Course Description
The global Geographic Information System (GIS) market is expected to by worth over ten billion dollars by 2023, and is growing at a huge rate.
Developers who are skilled with appropriate GIS software are already in high demand and the demand is growing.
At the GIS Stack Exchange - the spatial library for Python - the most questions asked are for ArcPy, which provides a Python API to Esri’s flagship product ArcGIS Desktop and its two main applications (ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap).
Consequently, there has never been a better time for Python developers to add ArcPy skills to their repertoire.
This course is primarily designed to introduce Python developers to the ArcPy classes and functions for working with ArcGIS Pro. It will also introduce them to many aspects of the ArcGIS Pro GUI, so that they are well placed to understand the requirements of the end users for the applications that they write.
While relatively little Python experience is needed to undertake the course, the Python classes and functions used may be easier to understand if you have already undertaken introductory Python training - such as the Learn Programming Academy’s Python Masterclass.
The course is also suitable for ArcGIS Pro end users who wish to learn ArcPy, but they may need to embark on a steep Python learning curve, if they have minimal skills in that language.
Most sections of this course can be taken in any order. You just need to download the data, and check that you have ArcGIS Pro and your Python IDE working first.
NOTE: Paid software is required to take this course.
The course requires only a Basic level license of ArcGIS Desktop (which includes ArcGIS Pro), and no extension products need to be licensed in order to complete all exercises.
If you do not have an ArcGIS Desktop license, then for about $100-150 per annum it is possible to use an Advanced level license and many of the extension products for non-commercial purposes (like taking this course!), via Esri’s ArcGIS for Personal Use program (details inside the course).
It is also possible to undertake a 21-day free trial of ArcGIS Pro (details also inside the course).
The recommendation is to take the 21-day free trial to get started.
This course starts by examining the various places that Python code can be used within the ArcGIS Pro application, and how Python code can be written using a Python IDE to interact with ArcGIS Pro as either a standalone script or a Python script tool.
You will then be taken on a tour of the most commonly used ArcPy functions and classes for geoprocessing, followed by tours of its modules for data access and mapping.
The scenarios chosen, to illustrate how each function and class is used, are derived from the presenter’s experience working with ArcPy and Python for almost 10 years, and with Esri software for 30 years.
Your instructor, Graeme Browning has been using the Esri software on a daily basis for over 30 years, 8 years of which he has spent using ArcPy. Graeme has also spent 18 years with Esri UK and Esri Australia working in different roles from Senior GIS Analyst to Technical Director.
He is also ranked in GIS Stack Exchange as the all-time, worldwide:
#1 user of ArcPy
#1 user of ArcGIS Desktop
#2 user of ArcGIS Pro
#5 user of all GIS products
Graeme has also received the Esri High Achievement Award by Jack Dangermond (President).
He has already developed nearly 20 one-day courses and half-day workshops for instructor-led delivery and along with that, nearly 20 eLearning video courses.
So if you're looking for the perfect instructor to teach you the best practices in learning ArcPy for Python, Graeme is the best one there is!
Key Topics to be covered are :
Using ArcPy and Python in multiple interfaces within and alongside ArcGIS Pro
Python window
Python IDE (e.g. IDLE)
Python Script Tools
Python Toolbox Tools
Python Parser for Field Calculating and Labeling
Using ArcPy Modules, Classes and Functions
Working with the search, update and insert cursors of ArcPy’s Data Access Module (arcpy.da)
Performing GIS Inventory by Listing Data, Describing Data and Walking System Folders and Spatial Datasets
Using the Mapping module for map automation using project, map, layer, layout, map frame, extent, camera, spatial reference, text, graphics, legends, scale bars, north arrows, pictures and many other object classes
Working with Map Series to meet simple through to complex Map Book requirements
Finding your way around ArcGIS Pro’s very extensive ArcPy/Python documentation
Working with Point, Line and Polygon Geometries
Setting the Geoprocessing Environment
Getting and Setting Parameters for Python Script Tools

Exporting map layouts to PDF
Enrolling in this course is the best decision you can make!
The course focuses on teaching ArcPy in-depth from the basics through to advanced
It’s 3-4 times the length of any other ArcPy course, and designed to accommodate many more lectures and challenges on not just ArcGIS Pro, but also ArcMap
Plus, it teaches ArcPy for ArcGIS Pro which was only released in 2015, while other ArcPy courses typically use only the older ArcMap! You are getting the most up to date learning!
By the end of this course, you will have the necessary skills needed to become an expert in ArcPy using ArcGIS Pro and apply it to your own programs such as Map Automation and Geoprocessing.
The ideal student would be someone with a basic knowledge of Python who is eager to improve their skills and take them to the next level by learning ArcPy using ArcGIS pro.
The sooner you sign up for this course, the sooner you will have the skills and knowledge that would put you among the list of in demand Python developers!

I will be turning 40years old this coming April, 2025. I don't know if I will still be a successful programmer in the future because currently I am a butcher here in Canada. Due to financial troubles this is I become today. When I saw this video tutorial it awakens my blood and childhood dream in Programming specifically in GIS. I hope you can also share more videos relating to GIS Development using ArcGIS Online, Android, JavaScript and others related to ESRI Products. I love GIS programming. I hope we could collaborate someday in God's perfect time. I wish you more success and I am hoping you could help people like me in the future. Long live Learn Programming (LP) Academy. I salute to you all.

I've just completed section 9, so I'm roughly halfway through the course. It's well-organized and structured, both in terms of the lectures, which progress in difficulty, and the resource material. Each lecture includes the relevant scripts, allowing you to easily copy and paste code blocks, saving you time typing. The explanations are quite clear, and Graeme (the lecturer) is excellent, as he promptly answers any student questions. However, I must emphasize that without prior knowledge of at least some Python fundamentals, understanding most of the scripts would be challenging. Even with my existing Python knowledge, I find some code segments tricky to grasp and often need to consult AI chatbots (ChatGPT, Deepseek, etc.) to clarify how certain parts of the scripts work or their purpose. I feel I'm gaining a solid general understanding of Python ArcPy, but I don't yet feel fully confident in writing ArcGIS scripts beyond the simplest ones. As a suggestion for the instructors, I would appreciate not only explanations and examples in the lectures but also exercises and challenges that require us to think and create our own scripts (for simple tasks). This would facilitate more practical learning and consolidate the concepts and tasks explained in the lectures, rather than simply applying the provided scripts. Overall, the course is definitely good and satisfying; it's clearly taught by a highly qualified and skilled professional

I think the Title and description are misleading. This course tackles more the issues of a GIS Professional faces than the problems a Python Developer (using arcpy) wants to address. Want an example? - the majority of the second half of the course is about layout, styling and other things a GIS Professional needs to take care about when delivering his work. However, important topics like raster analysis (and python coding those) are completely left out. Also the code is very redundant in this part. As a python dev, I use geospatial applications to tackle questions like AI-based detection of environmental risks and develop the tools to do so. The styling of a map I leave to GIS professionals. For GIS professional who want to speed up there workflow with Python a little bit I think the course is a good fit.

I wanted to understand and learn more about the ArcGIS PRO new tool from ESRI and improve my Python programming skillset to automate tasks for creating, designing custom GIS apps, also to maintain and managing Geodatabases. This course helped me learn some new ArcPy functions and techniques to improve my python code. Thank you!

The lecture is very well recorded, the sound is clear. One of the first Udemy course that I finished, 5 stars for the content. The only thing I wish that the instructor will do a better is to introduce the overview of the problems before he dives into tutorials. I know he uses the approach learning by doing but sometimes he jumps straight to the tutorial telling you where to click without explaining the problems, the situation, what you have, what you need to do, what is the challenge and how to solve the problem. This makes the tutorial very boring and sleepy to watch. Maybe this is only my personal view.

I have years of python experience using ArcMAP. I used this course to gain familiarization with Arcpy for ArcGIS Pro. I was very impressed with the depth of the course and the examples that were used. This course touched every corner of the Arcpy API as well as helped user gain familiarity with ArcGIS Pro. I highly recommend this course for beginners and ArcMAP 10.x users alike if you wish to use Arcpy in ArcGIS Pro 2.x

I liked the course that brought my understanding of the capabilities of arcpy to a very good level from which I can go my way. I was thankfull for the short response time to the two questions that I had. You certainly will have not many questions as the course is well prepared. Half star minus for the following two points: * I wished to have a 1 or 2 short introductory slides with the tasks and objectives for many of the lectures to get prepared and not just be lead to the goals while working on the lecture. This would also speed up the documentation of the content. * The ?Australien accent of Graeme Browning was a bit difficult to understand in the beginning for my experiences in English, which could be improved by more pronounced speaking. No worries, one gets used to it after the first lectures. Other than that, as a speaker of a German accent I strongly support all existing language accents :)

This is so far my favorite Udemy course. My strength is in GIS, but I am seeing a lot more employers looking for more skill in python which is, frankly, a lot harder to learn. I have dyslexia so learning languages (esp. computer languages) is very difficult. But the number of scripts and techniques in this course create a library to reference and apply to other projects. he instructor was also very responsive to questions which helped me move along and stay interested. I just wish it had more exercises or challenges to test my grasp on what is being taught.

Excellent! As a Python novice mainly capable of understanding/adapting scripts, I would have loved more automation codes with loops (iterations) (for example reading through a list of gdb files) combined with a set of geoprocessing tools (say 4/5 connected tools as in basic model builders). Again, extremely beneficial (time saving and value for money) yet the course requires patience, some personal homework to digest its impressive content!

I found this course very useful as a GIS professional developing an interest in Python programming. I have recently completed a core Python course with Udemy and know ESRI GIS well so this course was a great next step for me. It was pleasing the course touched on the application of Python throughout ArcGIS Pro rather than the core language itself (for which there are other courses). Graeme's instruction is clear and concise and easy to follow along to. I would have liked to see more exercises so if you are new to the Python language (or ESRI GIS products) then code along with Graeme rather than download the chapter's code for you'll get much more from this course. Don't be afraid to go to Python.org too to follow up on some key learnings. Something for everyone in this course. All the best. Chris.
