Build a complete distributed app using .Net Aspire (Udemy.com)

A complete guide to building an app using Aspire with .Net services and Next.js from scratch

Created by: Neil Cummings

Last updated January 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 167 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Neil Cummings teaches this as one long build. Across 16 sections, 198 lectures and about 27.6 hours, you assemble a Stack Overflow style question and answer app. The back end is .NET 9 with Aspire, WolverineFx messaging and PostgreSQL, with Keycloak handling login. The front end is Next.js with Tailwind and Zustand. The syllabus adds search, profile, stats and vote services, then finishes with Docker and Azure deployment. It expects basic C# and some JavaScript or TypeScript, but no Aspire or Keycloak background.

Reviewers like the pace. They describe the teaching as clear, patient and step by step, and one says Aspire made local microservices far nicer than hand-writing Docker images and compose files. The complaints are about age. Aspire and the front end libraries move fast, and two reviewers hit older code. One gave four stars because edits to updated methods got confusing, and says the score will rise after a refresh. Another had to rewrite HeroUI code after a new major version.

The ratings are strong: 131 of 167 are five stars, and nothing is below three. The course was last updated in January 2026 and now has a short Aspire 13.1 section, which helps, though version drift is still the main risk. It is a young course with about 2,100 students, so expect some fixing along the way. For anyone comfortable reading a changelog, it is a solid way to see how the pieces fit.

Best forC# developers who learn by building one big app and want microservices, Keycloak and Next.js in a single project.
Skip it ifYou want a short Aspire intro, or you need every line of code to match the latest package versions.

Pros

  • One real app from scratch, with search, profile, stats and vote services, instead of disconnected demos
  • Reviewers call the explanations clear, patient and easy to follow step by step
  • Covers Keycloak login, WolverineFx messaging and Next.js in the same project
  • Ends with deployment sections using Docker and Azure, plus two mini deployments along the way

Cons

  • Some lectures show older Aspire code, and reviewers say updating it on the fly gets confusing
  • The Next.js section uses HeroUI code that breaks on the current major version, so expect rewrites
  • Long at about 27.6 hours, with no quizzes or coding exercises beyond one answer challenge
Great course! Aspire made local deployment with microservices much nicer than creating all the docker images and compose manually like the last microservices course.

Intermediate fits. Basic C# and some JavaScript or TypeScript are assumed, but no Aspire, Wolverine or Keycloak experience is needed.

Course Description

Are you ready to take your .NET skills to the next level and build modern distributed applications?

In this hands-on course, you’ll learn how to design and develop a real-world, Stack Overflow–style app using the latest technologies in the .NET ecosystem and beyond.

We’ll start from scratch and guide you step by step through building a complete system with .NET 9, Aspire and WolverineFx. You’ll discover how to structure microservices, implement event-driven messaging, and manage data with PostgreSQL — all while keeping your application scalable and reliable.

On the front end, you’ll build a modern UI using Next.js (App Router), styled with Tailwind, and managed with Zustand for state management. Along the way, you’ll integrate Keycloak for secure authentication and authorization, giving your app production-ready identity features.

By the end of this course, you will not only understand the theory behind distributed systems but also have a fully working application that you can run locally with Docker or deploy to the cloud. More importantly, you’ll gain the practical skills to build, extend, and scale real-world systems in your own projects or career.

Whether you’re a .NET developer looking to level up, a full-stack developer curious about Aspire, or simply someone who wants to see how all the pieces fit together in a modern distributed system — this course is for you.

Enroll today, and let’s start building the future of apps with .NET Aspire and Next.js!

Great course! Aspire made local deployment with microservices much nicer than creating all the docker images and compose manually like the last microservices course.

By Janos Koczka on 6/5/2026

The instructor is very knowledgeable about the topic, and based on what I've seen so far, the course seems very good. Many of the exact HeroUI code used in the NextJS section is no longer usable because a new major version has been released since then. This means that you often have to rewrite the code to the current version, which is not a fatal problem, but it slows down the process, as it is not the main goal of this tutorial.

full comprehensive learning about aspire development and deployment of aspire application on dev and production. very well explained

By Rodger Jordas on 2/6/2026

The way this course is structured is actually my preferred way of learning. Unfortunately, I finished this course when some of the code being shown is for an older version of Aspire, so there were attempts to edit in updated code or methods and it got a bit confusing at times. I will update my score once the course is refreshed with new up-to-date content.

This is one of the best courses on .NET Aspire that I have seen so far. The concepts are explained very clearly, and it is easy to learn and apply many of them in practice. I gained a lot of valuable knowledge from this course and really appreciate the way the topics are presented.

It was truly an outstanding learning experience ! What impressed me the most was the incredible dedication and care that went into preparing not only the core content but also the thoughtfully crafted supplementary materials. It's clear that a lot of time, effort, and passion were invested to ensure that every detail was accessible and enriching. The instructor's teaching style was clear, structured, and incredibly patient. Even the more complex topics were explained in a way that felt approachable and easy to follow. The calm and methodical pace made it easy to absorb the concepts without feeling overwhelmed.

Rich course. Detailed discussions and justification of choices. Discovered many useful tools simplifying development. Engaging style. Congratulations.

By Slow Learner on 9/29/2025

It is a well prepared course with a good study case (developing a stackoverflow.com-like app that is production ready too).

By Gaurav Singh on 9/23/2025

I have not even started the course but I am leaving 5 stars for the course. Because Neil is an amazing instructor and he always puts efforts and ensure the course is always updated with available technologies.
