Course Description
** THIS COURSE HAS BEEN RECENTLY UPDATED for GODOT 4.4**
In this course you will learn how to create a procedurally generated 2D Roguelike similar to games like Nuclear Throne or Enter the gungeon. We will use an algorithm called random walker that we will use to create automatically new levels: everytime we will load our level a new one will be automatically generated, which open the gate for infinite levels. We will learn how to place our player, groups of enemies and exit inside it, as well as instancing ammunitions when our enemy dies. We will also create from scratch a player with typical roguelike movement and shooting mechanic like having the rotation of our player and his gun based on the position of the mouse, we will learn how to configure a mouse icon that is animated, how to create enemies that can patrol randomly and chase you once you’ve been detected, and way much more.
Here is a list of the things we will learn together:
Generating procedurally a level that is autotiled with terrains and collisions shape
Rotating the gun and the player toward the mouse position
Instancing enemies inside the border of our generated level
Having our enemy chasing us
Being able to collect ammo by looting them inside our level
Having a countdown that restart the level when reaching zero
Creating shader to damage the player
Having screen shake when the bullet explode
Having a player life system
Having an exit portal that we need to find to continue playing the game
I’ve been enjoying making this new course as I am fascinated by procedural generation, and I hope that this course will be the right entry gate for you if you want to go deeper into that segment of programming that is rarely taught in a way that is complete and accessible for beginner programmer.
The asset will be provided with this course, so you just have to enroll and start coding.
So thank you for reading this and considering buying this course, and I’ll see you in the first lecture!

It's been more than 8 years that I'm programming video game for all type of platform using either game engine like Unity or Godot Engine, or creating my own game engine with Python or C++ and SDL2.
Interested by teaching game development the way I would have been taught, I want my course to help you understand the core concept of game programming in the clearest, simplest and most efficient way possible. Thank you for considering buying the course! :)

I really enjoy having this course. Are not used advanced techniques and are presented basic, but good mechanics and concepts that almost every game uses. If you are looking for a basic course with a good introduction to godot and a few nodes this course is for you!

So, i've pretty much finished the course, i just have 3 lessons left and... what to say? This french instructor is actually really bad. It looks like he's just copying the code from somewhere else without knowing what he's doing... I mean... he's explaining some stuff but it's actually just the "obvious things": so things that you can actually get there by yourself. I bought this course because of the procedural creation of the tileset but actually it's not even explaining it that much... he's really just copy/pasting some code got from somewhere else... Do I recommend you to buy this course? NOPE. I think you can spend your money somewhere else in a better course. Have a good day and a good baguette!

It was a decent course for the subject. Note that this is not a class for beginners, the material is gone over very rapidly and with little explanation for the theory. You'll need to be able to find your way around inside Godot. With that in mind, those with a bit of experience with Godot will have a lot of nice things to learn. I also had to take a star off as I've noted that the instructor has abandoned the course without assisting current students by addressing questions. Other than those issues, I really enjoyed it!

I consider the course well done, short but covers the promised topics. It is a basic course for beginners who are approaching the procedural generation algorithm with the walker method for the first time but who have already faced the tutorial proposed in the online guides of Godot to familiarize with the engine. For me the teacher speaks a bit fast, he focuses on the right considerations, however, as he says at the end of the course, it is not over here. As it is the game seems like a timed escape room, I would like to give the proessor some advice to implement the video game such as implementing the advancement in levels, where every time the player crosses the portal go up one and return to zero if the player loses all lives or the time runs out, you could insert boss fights in a dedicated room, for example every 5 levels a boss fight with different enemy attacks each time and randomized, you could give a story to this game by inserting RPG elements and interactions with some NPCs, in addition to the already mentioned weapons, shields, different enemies. It is possible delve deeper into the issue of game balance, as it is proposed, it is difficult to lose because you don't run out of bullets, but if you run out how can the player eliminate enemies since he cannot throw punches? I am sure that this course will become better and I can not wait to see its evolutions in the future. Another advice for the teacher: do not ignore the errors reported by the integrated Debugger of Godot, in the terrain generation, the enemies and the ammos, there are errors that do not block the execution of the game but that could explain the reason for some bugs, however I do not have a precise idea of how to solve them, so I also wait for a further lesson on this subject. Good luck for everybody with the course.

Course completely fulfilled my expectations and teached me the things I was looking for. Extra plus that this isn't too long so it can be completed in shorter time. Some experience about coding and Godot is expected though as this course doesn't include the really basics of how to use the engine. I'm confident that I will continue to enhance this project to try out some ideas I got during the course.

I REALLY enjoy this course! I never used Godot ever but have some programming experience. I highly recommend this course for any beginner that always wanted to learn how to build a game and leave with a prototype you can be proud of and build upon later in the future. 10/10 Course!

Very fast-paced, which is good if you already have Godot or coding experience. Would not recommend taking this course starting with zero knowledge because the concepts of what everything is, i.e. instantiating and arrays, are touched on only briefly. Would recommend to someone who has basic knowledge of Godot.

The course was overall good (hence the 3 stars). It is a very gentle introduction to one of the algorithms for procedural generation using Godot. I would say it is not for very beginners, since the code pacing is somewhat fast (in terms of explaining what the code is exactly doing). However, the course could be improved on several aspects, which I will highlight some: The most important one is the lack of feedback by the instructor. Personally, I didn't asked any questions, but there are a lot of them unanswered. So, as for now, don't get stucked, and if you are, don't expect help from the instructor. Another thing is that, throughout the entire course, the Godot Debugger was complaining A LOT on several occasions. For example, when the map is generated, when some things are instantiated (like the ammo) and etc. Every time the game is loaded, those error gets accumulated, and it feels that they shouldn't be there (highlighted by the fact that they are in red, and not yellow). I tried to solve some of those bugs, but they are not so straightforward, as obviously I am unexperienced with the topic. So the lack of attention to the debugger annoyed me. Also, the game lacks polishing. It is, at most, an course about HOW TO SET UP your game, not "how to create a procedurally generated 2D Roguelike similar to games like Nuclear Throne or Enter the gungeon." as the course displays. On a side note, I am not sure if Enter the gungeon uses the algorithm that was used in the course. The game uses hand-made rooms, which are procedurally placed on the dungeon. Nonetheless, as I said in the beginning, the course was helpful for an introduction to the theme and I recommend buying it on sale.

This if my first course in Godot and I am very happy with it. Before that course I read the documentation and did my own game. But anyway I found a lot of new information about procedure generation, shaders, camera shaking, and other things. But I would improve the following: 1. Name conventions for the variables, classes, items in game tree. 2. Use Input.get_vector everywhere if possible. 3. More strict about types in the code and using `: Type` for external variable to the script. It makes autocomplete better. 4. Add lectures about creating menus, dialogs, and settings.
