Course Description

In this course, we are going to learn how to create from scratch a 2D isometric game using Godot Engine 4.3.

This course will cover quite a lot of topics:

- Understanding how to translate Cartesian coordinate into isometric

- Creating animation that can be display in 4 direction using the AnimationTree

- Using the built-in Godot Tilemap system for isometric game

- Learning how to set up collision shape in isometric tilemap

- Learning how to set up autotile for an isometric terrain

- Understanding how the new TilemapLayer system of Godot works

- How to set up layer properly in isometric using YSort

- How to add object to our game (trees, rocks, houses, coin) that we can interact with

- How to create an enemy that can patrol through code

- Create a system of key and door

- Changing levels

- Creating checkpoints

- Learning how to create shader in Godot

- Creating animated tilemap with the new TilemapLayer in isometric

...and way much more, for that just check the curriculum of this course to see what we are going to learn.

I have tailored this course so it is easy to use, most of the video are under 10 minutes to help you learn as much as you can the concept I am teaching you without overloading you with long and heavy videos like it can be the case in many other courses.

I am providing the asset so you can use everything in this course without other cost, you just have to buy the course, download the asset and start programming for creating your future game.

This course is made for beginner in game development that want to learn how to create 2D isometric game using that fantastic open source game engine that is Godot Engine 4.3 as well as more seasoned developer that want to use their skills by learning an exigent and famously known difficult genre of video game like isometric.

I’ve been enjoying making this new course as I am fascinated by isometric game, and I hope that this course will be the right entry gate for you if you want to go deeper into that segment of programming that is rarely taught in a way that is complete and accessible for beginner programmer.

So thank you for reading this and considering buying this course, and I’ll see you in the first lecture!

This course was good. The instructor walked through how to construct the character and isometric 2D environment, with each section's instruction built on top of the last. I felt there were some missed opportunities for the instructor to explain *why* patterns and decisions were made, instead of just teaching in a "follow along" style. Many times, the instruction was so quick it required rewinding; viewing at 0.75 speed seemed to help with this.

I could follow most of the videos. Not a fan of some of the hard coded logic. It may have been better for example to be consistent and use spawn points for moving between levels. There was some missing videos. (for example showing the player dying animation and adding some sound) I have learned some of this from other courses. However overall I did learn about isometric game building and is a useful base for my own interest in isometric games.

The instructor made the lectures very easy to understand. I’ve been struggling lately to learn Godot by watching random videos online, which often left me more confused. Fortunately, I stumbled upon this course, and it really helped me grasp the concepts better. The lessons are well-structured, clear, and beginner-friendly — making it much easier to follow along and actually apply what I’ve learned in my own projects.

I was interested in making an isometric game, so I bought this course that was specifically tailored to that goal. I did manage to learn some of the things that I wanted to learn from this course, plus some other extra things, like BlendSpace in Godot AnimationTree node etc. So overall, I would say the course deliver on enough value. That being said, there are reasons for me to leave a 3-star rating on the course. This course is set at the beginner level, and admittedly, I am not a beginner in programming nor working with Godot (I just have never worked in isometric 2D, so that was what I wanted to learn). There are 2 main issues for me in this course: 1. The instructor doesn't follow programming and Godot-specific conventions. Now, this is not a huge issue, and many people would say it is just personal preferences, which I agree, but at the same time, conventions exist for important reasons. Those reasons being that: first it would be much easier to further your knowledge with more learning but everyone else would be adhering to conventions while you do not, which could lead to confusion on your part; and secondly, conventions become very important when you work in a team, and confusions will arise when everyone follow different styles of writing codes. It's just much easier to follow conventions to make sure everyone is on the same page. 2. The instructor used a lot of shortcuts and "hacks" to create this game/course. Now, again, if you are an absolute beginner and/or just want to make a small game as a hobby in as little time as possible, then this is not a huge issue. I have even heard successful game devs that say "bad codes don't matter." However, I can already see that the way this game was implemented in this course would become very hard to maintain/expand on if one was to aspire to make a bigger/commercial game. In other words, I would say someone who bought this course would have to spend extra effort/money in learning how to do things in a better way. Furthermore, there are many other important aspects of a game that this course didn't touch on. The instructor did provide some sort of guideline on what else to learn after this course, but I can see how people can feel like it doesn't deliver enough value. Overall, for my use case, this course did deliver adequately, but if I was looking to take only one course on Godot game development to kickstart my game, I wouldn't recommend this course (for context, I have taken multiple other Godot courses on Udemy).

I took this course because I wanted to finish my own isometric game project and it helped me a lot. Excelent job on the course, in my case I had some experience with isometric development so it was really easy for me to follow along, I recommend it. Hope to see more isometric/or non isometric game courses.

Hi Jean, great job for the lesson. I enjoyed it. :) And Thank you for the insight in your last video!

Everything works fine and as long as you follow exactly what the instructor says and does you will be fine. That said, there's very little explanation on the WHY. An example is on the Section2, lessons 17-19 where the instructor goes through a "complex" layering exercise about collisions with very little explanation. It's nothing really major as long as you have some experience with game engines, otherwise it might be really confusing.

RECOMMENDED ! But few issues in the course:- 1. The instructor misses out on multiple good practices like consistent naming scheme of variables and classnames. 2. The ordering of sprites is not explained correctly. Instead of messing around with collision shapes of house and spikes, you change change the offset of the sprite in Y direction. 3. The prononciation is also little bit hard to understand.

The coding part is not well explained, there was a lack of attention, it seems like he believes that everyone already knows this whole part, maybe launch a course just on coding, but I'm enjoying it so far.
