Course Description

Please note that this course is for Godot 3 and has not been updated for Godot 4. The skills you will learn in this course are largely transferrable to Godot 4, but please be aware of this before you purchase!

This course will cover everything you need to know about creating a small 2D platformer from start to finish in the Godot Engine. This course covers all aspects of creating a complete platformer game in Godot including:

  • Game mechanics like player movement, collectibles, and basic combat

  • Hazards like spikes and enemies

  • A seamless game loop and transitions between levels

  • Scene structure and project organization

  • Sound effects

  • A main menu, pause menu, options menu, and other UI elements

  • Finishing touches like camera shake, basic shaders, particle effects, and UI animations

This list is not exhaustive - please see the course outline for a glimpse into the topics that are covered.

The goal of this course is to show you how to take an empty project and turn it into a small, complete game. In doing so, this course will expose you to many aspects of the Godot engine from input handling, to tilemaps, to particles, to audio, and more. By the time you complete this course, you will feel comfortable working on your own projects in Godot. You will walk away from this course with a solid foundational understanding of making games that are not only functional but also fun.

This course will help you greatly if:

  • You have some game development knowledge and want to learn Godot

  • You have some programming knowledge and want to make games

  • Your games feel sterile and lack polish

  • You struggle to complete games and want to start and finish a project

  • You regularly participate in game jams and want to improve your ability to craft a fun but short experience

Please note that this course is focused purely on the start-to-finish process of making a game. As such, there isn't any time spent explaining fundamental programming concepts. Familiarity with programming is strongly recommended before taking this course. Any programming experience is fine - GDScript is easy to use.

I really enjoyed this course. The pacing was good, the length of each lesson was great. The instructor spoke very clearly and to the point so not a lot of time was wasted. The instructor was also very clearly knowledgeable about the topic and I could tell he really knew what he was doing. I would recommend this course to anyone looking to get started with game dev who has no programming experience since the Godot engine is very simple and easy to use and the gdscript language is also very straightforward to pick up with its python-like syntax. It really feels like a great balance between writing code and game design.

Very good instruction. Sometimes he doesn't pause after explaining what he is typing. So a one-second pause after finishing some code before jumping to another view would be helpful. Otherwise, really good course.

It has been a very good course so far, but I think that some concepts could be more visually and maybe a little more in depth explained.

A great introduction to Godot and how to build a template for a tile based platformer that is very easy to expand upon. You feel like he knows what game he's trying to build, but is also playing around with values as he does so. So it's not as scripted as some other courses that tell you to input values they're derived off-screen prior. Instructions were very clear and anything that required a deeper dive was usually handled well. Unfortunately the editor and GDScript has undergone a lot of changes in version 4, so if you're trying to follow along in v4 be prepared to search for how certain things work in their updated format, and a couple of things I just couldn't get working. Not a knock against the course, just something to be aware of.

This course has changed my life. My whole outlook on everything that exists in this world, in fact even in the entire universe. I can never look at anything I know the same way ever again. This course represents emotions most humans could never comprehend. But I can. Thanks to this course I have been awakened to many things previously thought unimaginable. I was watching this course and then my neighbor came and we watched it together. He said this course really changed his life and it touched my heart. My village people are so grateful. Am proud to say cool course wow thanks for sharing.

This course is great, clear explanation, and very systematic. The only critique for this course is to give the results of the objective in beginning of video to visualize what the end result of the thing video try to achieve, before going on the process explanation how to achieve it.

By Ric on 7/21/2022

The course was complete with clear instruction. I think it's perfect for beginners except the instructor went very fast, requiring frequent pauses and rewinds to catch snipits of code or little easy-to-miss settings.

A very well produced tutorial. I stumbled on Firebelley because another YouTube video recommended him. I started watching some of his content in YouTube and liked it so much that I decided to take his Udemy course. At first I wanted to skip to the second half of the tutorial because I felt like I would have been wasting my time in the first half, but there were a lot of methods that I've never learned from YouTube University. Firebelley doesn't just give you the code for you to copy, he goes into detail and explains why he's using the method of execution. I hope Firebelley makes more tutorials, I would definitely but another one from him.

It's teaching me what I want to know, and not omitting anything I feel. The version of Godot that I'm working with is different than the one the instructor is using, but there was like one or two instances where it was kind of inconsistent, and the other times were UI editor differences which I didn't mind.

This is definitely the best of the Udemy courses that I have taken. At the end of the course you have a complete game, but more importantly, each video gives you the knowledge to build a single game mechanic, so that this mechanic can be applied to other games that you can build. Also, each piece builds upon the last to give a more complete understanding of the whole development process. Finally, and importantly, I had a lot of fun while working through the course material. The videos are presented really well. I recommend this course very highly.
