Course Description
Taught by video editor and content creator Brandon Baldovin, DaVinci Resolve Essentials is a practical introduction to one of the most powerful tools in modern post production. Whether you’re cutting a social clip, trailer, or documentary, DaVinci Resolve brings together editing, audio, motion graphics, and color in a single application. This comprehensive 12-hour course shows you how to wield that power with confidence, so you can focus on telling better stories instead of fighting the software.
If you’ve ever opened DaVinci, felt overwhelmed by all the pages and panels, and closed it just as fast, you’re not alone. Brandon is here to guide you step-by-step with hands-on projects that don’t just teach you where to click but how to think about each editing challenge as it comes. You’ll work through a variety of videos from first import to final render, building skills through repetition, problem solving, and practical application.
Together with Brandon, you’ll learn how to:
Navigate the relevant pages of DaVinci Resolve and skip the rest
Create projects, timelines, and media bins that stay organized
Use J and L cuts, b-roll, music, and sound effects to shape compelling edits
Work inside Fusion to design your own motion graphics
Build a simple, repeatable approach to color correction and basic grading (and learn the difference between the two!)
Streamline your workflow with adjustment clips, compound clips, power bins, and proxies
Best of all, DaVinci Resolve is free. If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at video editing, whether for personal projects, content creation, or client work, there’s never been a better time or a better tool. This course is designed to help you focus on only the core features you need to get started, so you can build confidence and make intentional decisions no matter what type of footage you’re working with.
By the end, you’ll have a reels’ worth of finished projects that reflect your editing sensibilities, including a talking head video, short form social content, a trailer, and a polished mini documentary. Even more importantly, you’ll have the confidence to open DaVinci Resolve and transform a blank timeline into your creative vision, time and again. Let’s get editing!
Note: Because the exercise files contain video footage, they’re large (7 GB) and may take extra time to download. EditStock has generously supplied watermarked footage for use in the course and course exercise files.
Requirements
Download DaVinci Resolve, either the free version or Studio (paid)
A computer that meets DaVinci Resolve minimum system requirements, with at least 16GB of RAM recommended
Enough storage space for exercise files and included footage, either on your computer or an external hard drive
Headphones strongly recommended to properly hear dialogue, music, and sound effects
A mouse can be helpful for precise timeline and Fusion work, though a trackpad also works

Sharing is who I am, and teaching is where I am at my best, because I've been on both sides of that equation, and getting to deliver useful training is my meaningful way to be a part of the creative community.
I've spent a long time watching others learn, and teach, to refine how I work with you to be efficient, useful and, most importantly, memorable. I want you to carry what I've shown you into a bright future.
I have a wife (a lovely Irish girl) and kids. I have lived and worked in many places (as Kiwis tend to do) – but most of my 14+ years of creating and teaching has had one overriding theme: bringing others along for the ride as we all try to change the world with our stories, our labours of love and our art.
I'm a certified Adobe instructor (ACI) in Ireland. I'm also an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) and have completed the Adobe Certified Associate training (ACA). And I don't just do Adobe. Remember, media is a very broad term – digital blew out the borders, so we are all constantly learning.
I've been teaching for 14+ years. I come from being a media designer and content creator – so I understand exactly where you're at now. I've been there. I love this stuff. Print, digital publishing, web and video. I can see how it all connects. And I can see how we can share those connections.

This is an incredibly awesome course! Don’t even think twice about whether you should buy it or not - the answer is YES! You absolutely should. Just by completing this course, you’ll be able to edit videos at a really good level. From there, everything depends on you and how much you practice. A huge thank you to Daniel for sharing your knowledge!

I needed to find a quick and easy video tutorial series to learn Davinci Resolve quickly. The assignments, I believe, will help confirm that I am learning the most important aspects of video editing - although I haven't gotten to this point yet. Once completed, if there is a certificate of completion, that would be helpful for me to show that I have completed some formal training.

Daniel Walter Scott and Brandon's entry-level course demonstrates exceptional effort (9/10), characterized by a meticulously curated asset pipeline and structural pacing that seamlessly connects DaVinci’s multi-page workflow. The high-density instruction and tailored, genre-specific footage elevate the content far above typical YouTube tutorials, prioritizing a cohesive creative pipeline over deep-dive troubleshooting. Given the sheer volume of meticulous preparation and structured planning evident in every lesson, a standard 4.5/5 score simply could not do justice to the immense work done here. It is an absolute benchmark for structured learning.

I know Daniel to be a great instructor from a previous course I took with him. Brandon has worked with Daniel to make the perfect course on Da Vinci Resolve. I can't thank them enough. The course is easy to follow and best of all, easy to listen to. I'm an hour into this course but loving it just like I loved Daniel's previous course. Thanks guys!!

Yes, so far, it's very good. I did already download DaVinci and I tried going through their free manual getting started, which was okay, except it's like your walking through deep mud.. When I saw this course on offer, I immediately downloaded it. Regarding the first assignment; unfortunately, I'm one of those people where the first question is, well, where do I start? And I know that sounds weird in some ways because it's almost like I need a helping hand, like a car starting up, you know. it would have been helpful if I could have, like, this is how you start., you know, click on this, click on that, do this, off you go. That would have been helpful a little bit for me. But yes, it's a very good course, very, very good course.

This is the first course I’ve completed in full. I’ve taken courses before, but I never really had the motivation to finish them. But honestly, this is one of the better courses for learning the basics of video editing!! Great job to everyone who worked on this course—I truly have nothing but praise for it!!! So if you’re unsure whether or not to take this course, I’d definitely recommend going for it. You won’t regret it. Inside, you’ll find everything—literally. There are plenty of projects that you work on yourself, which gives you a lot of creative freedom, and I found that absolutely amazing. Honestly, I’m very, very, very satisfied. Once again, great job

I went from never opening DaVinci Resolve to editing trailers with speed ramps, beat-synced cuts, and layered audio — in less than two weeks. Brandon's project-based approach is exactly what I needed. The trailer editing section was my favorite — it finally clicked how music, pacing, and cuts work together to create energy. I love this course What I'd love to see added: • A dedicated Fusion course • A dedicated Color Grading course • More on the psychology of editing — when to cut, why certain pacing works, the emotional reasoning behind creative decisions Brandon, if you're reading this: thank you. This course changed my trajectory. Please make more.
