Course Description
One of the only comprehensive, detailed and approachable online courses taking you through the physics behind wings and propellers to then teach you how to use Actuator Disk theory or Blade Element Theory in MATLAB to model, design and simulate the performance of propellers accurately in real life conditions.
Today, propellers and wings are central to ensuring the functioning of some of the most important and impressive machines created by mankind. From personal drones, to airplanes, how does "apparently" such simple engineering devices create forces literally out of thin air, and how can you harness the wonderful Physics behind them?
This course gives you the opportunity to learn and do the following:
- Understand Aerodynamics and Pressure.
- Understand the Physics behind Wings and Propellers.
- Understand Actuator Disk Theory from its fundamentals and use it to estimate Propellers' Power, Thrust and Efficiency.
- Understand Blade Element Theory from its fundamentals.
- Implement Blade Element Theory in MATLAB and use it to fully design and/or simulate propellers in real flight conditions.
I will thoroughly detail and walk you through each of these concepts and techniques and explain down to their fundamental principles, all concepts and subject-specific vocabulary. This course is the ideal beginner, intermediate or advanced learning platform for the mathematics and physics behind wings and propellers as well as the use of MATLAB in engineering design and simulation. Whatever your background, whether you are a student, an engineer, a sci-fi addict, an amateur roboticist, a drone builder, a computer scientist or a business or sports person, you will master the physics behind propellers and learn how to use the power of MATLAB to design and simulate your own propellers for any project you might have, whether pure curiosity or a full-sized aircraft!
If you have questions at any point of your progress along the course, do not hesitate to contact me, it will be my pleasure to answer you within 24 hours!
If this sounds like it might interest you, for your personal growth, career or academic endeavours, I strongly encourage you to join! You won't regret it!

I have always been impressed and passionate about flying machines and the ultimate frontier that space represents. This led me to graduate from a Masters in Aerospace Engineering as one of the top students at a leading UK university. Throughout this degree I was offered the opportunity to understand and apply advanced engineering concepts to different design projects.
In my final year, I consequently designed a proof of concept nuclear battery or Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (refer to my courses to learn more about these) for nanosatellites which was judged by academics as one of the best projects of my department, won the Reaction Engines prize and presented at the 4th Interplanetary Cubesat Workshop. Similarly, I developed, with a team of colleagues, an unmanned rotorcraft able to fight fires, carry cargo and surveillance missions which eventually won a design competition for Agusta Westland.
I went on to found FuroSystems, a company which designs, manufactures and retails ultra light high performance electric vehicles. Our goal is to help accelerate society's transition to electric means of transportation through aesthetic, powerful and affordable machines. We are now present in over 30 countries and have sold 1000s of units.
I am very excited to be able to share my knowledge with curious individuals, who like me want to know more about the engineering behind the wonderful machines that populate our world.

could have been thought better in the section 1 and 2 parts , by presenting it by working videos , or shown some visuals to understand the core better . would have been better than just explaining in words.

The course was good and worth it. Nice and clear content. In case there is room for future improvement, I would suggest to go a little deeper in MBET. Some blade tip corrections together with its pros and cons would be very welcome (e.g., Burril's, Goldstein, cascade airfoils, i.e., high solidity).

Good presentation but sometimes is not required to read the entire formula variable by variable. In this way the lecture became lighter and can be focused to explain directly what the parts of the formula mean

Yes this course was really eye opening. I got to do an actual practical application of MATLAB on my field of interest. The course content was new and engaging the entire way, not something I learned at my engineering college.

I got my doubts clarified on the subject matter and gained an idea regarding how the aerodynamic computation for propellers performance are being done numerically.

Excellent course. The dedication and well explanation of the instructor makes it easy to understand complex engineering and fluid dynamics topics, as well as MATLAB coding.

Amazing course on Aircraft Propeller performance analysis, really helpful for those who have a basic understanding in aerodynamics and and would like to enter into Aerodynamics of propellers.

Really useful, I was struggling to code my propeller for my MSc thesis (lots of different methodologies presented by different people, plus I was constantly getting negative thrust values and silly efficiency values). However, this has cleared up a few queries I had and gives me good validation for my code. Thanks a lot for the in-depth explanation.

I used the framework of your code to help develope code as the basis. I am trying to analyse propellers where the flow is not exactly all axial flow. Thanks for the information. Where did you get it from it would be nice to read some textbooks and stuff on the same material. Thanks again :)

Great course, As a final year in my Meng of Aerospatial Engineering, it was a super direct and helpful course that helped me go through a challenging project. Definitely recommend it!
