Course Description
One of the only comprehensive, detailed and approachable online courses taking you from the mathematical modelling of a quadcopter drone to MATLAB/SIMULINK implementation and PID control design.
Today, drones are everywhere, from ultra high tech military devices to toys for kids going through advanced flying cameras and much more. How do such "apparently" simple machines achieve such precise and impressive flights in varying unstable and unpredictable environmental conditions.
This course gives you the opportunity to learn and do the following:
- Understand and harness the Physics behind a Quadcopter Drone.
- Establish and approximate the Physics of DC motors and propellers from experimental data.
- Derive the mathematical equations behind the rotational and linear dynamics of a drone.
- Implement them in engineering model in MATLAB & SIMULINK using blocks, MATLAB functions, etc.
- Test and fit your model to relevant real life performance and inputs.
- Implement, test and tune PID controllers adapted to your requirements in order to control the output of your system, in this case the altitude, position and attitude of your drone.
I will thoroughly detail and walk you through each of these concepts and techniques and explain down to their fundamental principles, all concepts and subject-specific vocabulary. This course is the ideal beginner, intermediate or advanced learning platform for the mathematics behind engineering systems, the use of MATLAB and SIMULINK in engineering design and PID control. Whatever your background, whether you are a student, an engineer, a sci-fi addict, an amateur roboticist, a drone builder, a computer scientist or a business or sports person, you will master the physics behind an electric car and learn how to implement and control them in SIMULINK by designing powerful PID controllers that bridge the gap between humans and machines!
If you have questions at any point of your progress along the course, do not hesitate to contact me, it will be my pleasure to answer you within 24 hours!
If this sounds like it might interest you, for your personal growth, career or academic endeavours, I strongly encourage you to join! You won't regret it!

I have always been impressed and passionate about flying machines and the ultimate frontier that space represents. This led me to graduate from a Masters in Aerospace Engineering as one of the top students at a leading UK university. Throughout this degree I was offered the opportunity to understand and apply advanced engineering concepts to different design projects.
In my final year, I consequently designed a proof of concept nuclear battery or Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (refer to my courses to learn more about these) for nanosatellites which was judged by academics as one of the best projects of my department, won the Reaction Engines prize and presented at the 4th Interplanetary Cubesat Workshop. Similarly, I developed, with a team of colleagues, an unmanned rotorcraft able to fight fires, carry cargo and surveillance missions which eventually won a design competition for Agusta Westland.
I went on to found FuroSystems, a company which designs, manufactures and retails ultra light high performance electric vehicles. Our goal is to help accelerate society's transition to electric means of transportation through aesthetic, powerful and affordable machines. We are now present in over 30 countries and have sold 1000s of units.
I am very excited to be able to share my knowledge with curious individuals, who like me want to know more about the engineering behind the wonderful machines that populate our world.

As an aerospace engineering student ,it was a pleasure for me to take that course.I didn't even finished my lectures yet but I want to help my teacher for his videos since he help us very well.In these cource ,although you make some assumptions, what you've learned is very useful to implement in real life. You will start with formula then going into the simulink and also perform visualiton. It is fair to state sincerely,it is great course to purchase.Im from turkey so sorry for my english if there are some mistakes.

- Section 1 is very well done and it clearly explains the physics of quadcopters. - Section 2 is also good but some parts could be improved such as, for example, the human control part. - Section 3 instead, in my opinion, can be improved quite a bit. It is nice at the beginning to show how to tune a PID with a trial and error procedure, to see how the responses are changing. But basically the whole section is used to play around with the gains, and this becomes a bit ripetitive. I think it would be nicer in the second part of the section to use directly a set of parameters that have been previously tuned offline and to simulate some maneuvers with the closed-loop system or to show some more advanced controller.

The course is a good start, but doesn't actually cover modeling of sensors. The instructor speaks well, but makes a few mistakes throughout that make it a little difficult to follow. I would love to see a more in-depth course that includes more complex 3d modeling.

What I liked is that the course had actual equations to backup the flow of the Simulink control system diagram and used an example of an existing quadcopter. A lot of the material was read off the slides so I would have preferred some sort of additional real time marks to help solidify some explanations. I already had a background in engineering so I understood much of the terms initially. Overall, good course that really did close the loop of modeling a quadcopter control system.

Really very hands-on (Simulink) course for beginners in PIDs and quadcopters. Gives us the quickest start to the field which no book can do. However, it is important to build your theoretical base through textbooks and more mathematical courses but I would definitely recommend this course for all those beginners who are interested in building PID controllers for quadcopters. One area which was a pain throughout the course is that the resolution of 720p is too low for large sceens especially keeping in view the labels in Simulink are already too small. Would be glad if Udemy provides the videos at least up to 1080p.

The course is really good. One can completely learn how to model a quadcopter. It would be better if you could extend the course with one last video showing how to see the output in animated window. Anyhow the course is really awesome. Thanks to Udemy and Eliot.

The course teaches a lot in less time. This course could be made better with a few illustrations, but that's about it. Any of your doubts are answered in 24 hrs, which is actually cool. I would recommend this course to all who would like to learn to mathematically model a system and build its control system in MATLAB.

this lecture was great. but i wish he explained in full detail how the battery works and its effects on the drone. that was what i struggled with the most. cons: I wish he showed himself on a corner of the screen during the lecture. simple hand gestures could have made me understand the drone dynamics quicker. I learnt a lot from this course. it was very close to being absolutely perfect. I am more proficient in simulink now and would definately add it to my resume! ( Mechanical engineering student). I recommend this course. Thank you!

The instructor seems to answer all your questions and he does care about you. The content is adequate, i expect Mr. Wertheimer to teach more advanced another course about drones, maybe autonomous ones as he really have knowledge and experience about this area of subject. Overall, it is a perfect course to start and learn about modelling drones.
