Course Description

-- UPDATE - Warrior girl character blueprint added upon request!

What makes a good game?

A good game needs a great story. It needs nice overall graphics. Engaging gameplay.

And it also needs well designed characters!

This course is exactly about that! When you are developing your own game, and you are not a designer, you will find creating a hero for your game challenging!

During the course we learn

  • the theory of character design

  • what makes a good character

  • my 6 step character design method

  • to create a character sheet

  • to prepare our characters for animation

  • to animate our characters

And we will do all this in Inkscape, this epic free software! It is a very versatile vector tool, which makes designing characters much more easier and faster!

Apart of the above, I will share character blueprints with you! These are showing how I design a character with Inkscape from scratch. We practice different skills with each character. We create character sheet from one, and basic animation from the other.

The characters we will create:

  • a simple and cute robot character - great for kids

  • a black ninja warrior - simple and smooth

  • a heavy rpg warrior - a real tank!

  • a  fantasy skeleton warrior - cute but deadly

  • NEW! a warrior girl - ready to fight!

Your task will be to practice and create character sheet and basic animation for all the characters, or your very own game hero/enemy!

I will also share tips and tricks in the course. In these short lessons I usually want to help you to work faster and create better designed figures.

Mind that this is only the first version of the course! I will add several new character blueprints - and listen to the need of my students - and I will keep the course updated.

I don't want to talk about myself. If you want to know me better, read my instructor bio. But I can tell you one thing: I am here to teach. When you ask me, I will help and will find a solution to your problem the best I can!

The course is great for beginners to get started with character design! After this course, I would recommend trying out creating characters yourself to get into more advanced designs.

Really nice course! Professor explains very well and everything detailing the process of making every character! I highly recommend watch the videos first to focus on every detail of the process of making the character, and next trying do yourself! That's what I've done! Thank you professor!

It's very illustrative, with a lot of tips that shows with some simple concepts and operations in Inkscape, which allow me to create and customize a diversity of characters. Liked very much and I recommend, if you as me, know little about Inkscape and want to try and create your own characters design!

It's a great combination of combining practice with theory. I have to pause to do my own details & fix my mess ups, but it's smooth flowing, good food for thought. There are plenty of details & ideas provided to consider when trying to create a character. Not just "do this & this and this does that," but actual workflows and considerations that make a difference later on in your own productivity, character originality, "believability," & more.

I just finished the course over the course of a few days off and on. The course says this is not a beginners course but I would argue that it absolutely is a beginners course. I felt that the course was just okay. Through the course you create a few basic characters with very little details. I feel the course would benefit a lot if the instructor showed you how to do some nice shading besides some minor gradients on the sides of a few heads. The instructor says they will tell you all the keys and actions they take and he mostly does but sometimes its a little late after the action was already performed so it makes it a little hard to follow. Also sometimes I wished that things were zoomed in just a little bit more so I could see things a bit more clearly. If you have some Inkscape and or character experience you might want to look for something more in depth.

A very helpful course for people who already have some basic knowledge in Inkscape, who want to draw cartoonish looking game characters. Although Inkscape is not an animation tool, the course shows a practicable way to nevertheless create an animation sequence for a spritesheet. The techniques are shown on a ninja, robot, skeleton and warrior like character, but are easily adaptable to one's own imaginations.

Mr. Szep is very good at not only showing the steps for building a character, but letting us see his process, which for me is the most interesting part. He shows us that it is not a matter of mechanically churning out body parts; the best part is taking a look at what you have created and editing it on the fly to make it better. His videos can be viewed many times, and you will glean something from them each time that will help you improve your process.

Great tutorial: detailed, explained. Tutor shows his workflow and makes good points and advices. If you are looking for introduction into character design for games or animations , this is course for you. Thanks Istvan!

Excellent course! This is my second course I've taken by the instructor István. I had no prior knowledge to drawing/illustrations whatsoever, but he manage to both teach me and inspire me! I now use Inkscape almost everyday, from drawing funny characters to drawing flowcharts.

Extremely easy to follow even for a beginner or a terrible artist such as myself. He shows you several useful shortcuts to use while working on your art, which is definitely better than getting lost in menus. The character creation is simple, flexible and bone-based. He even shows you how to modularize & animate in Inkscape.
