Our take
Based on the ratings of 76,967 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short email etiquette course for people who use email most days at work. It runs about 73 minutes across 32 lectures in six sections, with four quizzes, a downloadable coursebook and a seven-point checklist. The syllabus covers structure, tone and formality, subject lines, greetings and sign-offs, mobile layout, out of office replies and proofreading. It also looks at when email is the wrong channel. It is aimed at recent graduates, managers and experienced staff, and it is not meant for sales or marketing email.
Reviewers like how clear it is. Clare Lynch, a Cambridge tutor and copywriter, gets credit for speaking slowly and giving lots of examples. One says it made them more confident, and one manager uses it to explain expectations to staff. The complaints are mild. One reviewer wanted more depth on sensitive emails, another found it repetitive because they were made to take it, and one says some sections would not tick off, which blocked the certificate. Of nearly 77,000 ratings, most are four or five stars.
The course was last updated in April 2024. Email advice ages slowly, so that matters little. With about 194,000 students, it is a very popular pick for its topic. Anyone who already writes tidy emails will probably find it a refresher, not a revelation. For a new graduate, or a manager who wants something to hand a team, it is an easy hour to spend.
Pros
- Short at 73 minutes, so it fits into a lunch break
- Reviewers say the examples for each topic make the advice easy to apply
- Students say Clare Lynch speaks slowly and keeps explanations clear
- Printable seven-point checklist and coursebook to keep by the desk
Cons
- Thin on sensitive emails, one reviewer wanted more detail there
- A refresher for experienced writers, one reviewer found it repetitive
- One reviewer could not tick off sections, which blocked the certificate
It was a good reminder for me, but an even better tool to use to explain my expectations to my employees.
Listed for all levels, but it suits office workers who email daily, from new graduates to managers.
