Course Description

"Fast and Furious Game Development with JavaScript and AI" was created to take anyone with or without experience in coding, teach them HTML5 + CSS and JavaScript from the ground up using Graphics and Game Development as the platform to learn. And then with the fundamentals in hand, we take one of the most exciting journeys in computing and we learn how to use Generative AIs like ChatGPT to build working games! (Discount S T A R C A S T L E).

In the first part of the course, we start with how the internet and HTML work with respect to browsers. Then we start off with a "Hello World" in HTML and build our first web page. From there, lecture after lecture, we dig deeper and deeper into the most important features of HTML5 + CSS, so you can create basic websites with formatting, styling, controls and more. So, if you have never made a website in your life, you will learn step by step in this part of the course. Even if you are a seasoned programmer that has never got around to learning HTML5 + CSS you will enjoy this section.

In the next part of the course we cover JavaScript from the ground up, we will learn the basics of variables, math, conditionals, loops, functions, and more. As the lectures progress, we cover more and more advanced subjects like event driven programming, recursion, and object oriented programming in JavaScript. Then we switch gears and start learning about computer graphics and game development as we continue to learn JavaScript features. We learn how to draw on the HTML5 Canvas, how to animate sprites, and perform simple physics simulations. Of course, along the way, we learn how to interface with the keyboard and mouse and how to integrate our HTML pages (websites) with JavaScript and how to send messages between them. Additionally, we learn how to manipulate the DOM (Document Object Model) which is the tree like data structure that represents your webpages. Learning a new language can be a daunting task, but learning a new language using graphics and game development as the platform to learn is the only way to do it! I promise it won't be boring.

In the last part of the course, we delve into AI and ChatGPT. At this point in the course, you're a skilled JavaScript programmer with all the tools needed to make complete games. However, instead of making games by ourselves, we are going to learn to collaborate with the most advanced AI in the world (arguably) ChatGPT. You will learn how to "Prompt" ChatGPT to create working skeletons of classic arcade games. You will learn how to steer the AI to get it to generate working code along with its limitations through "Prompt Engineering". Then after ChatGPT gives us a working skeleton of a game then you and I will take that game and finish it with what we have learned and add graphics, sound, music, and more game play features. We will do this over half a dozen times as we re-create classic games that are fun to play as well as amazing achievements for an AI to create. We will build these games and more:

  • Pong

  • Breakout / Arkanoid

  • Snake

  • Flappy Bird

  • 3D Wire Frame Space Shooter

  • Space Invaders

  • Blackjack

  • RetroRift Space Shooter (ChatGPT original)

Finally, the course also comes with free electronic PDF copies of some of my most classic game development books that have taught millions of students and professionals game development over the years:

  • "Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus"

  • "The Black Art of 3D Game Programming"

  • "Tricks of the 3D Game Programming Gurus"

In closing, this course takes the hottest subjects in computing; JavaScript + HTML5, Game Development and Artificial Intelligence with ChatGPT and blends them together in a way no one has ever done before making learning these subjects fun and engaging. And with the knowledge you learn, you can deploy games and apps that run on billions of devices that support browsers. That's a Super Power you want to have in your toolbox!

André taught me practically everything I know about programming in the 90s with his books and is one of the GOATs in computer science, game programming, software engineering and electrical engineering. I could not buy all of his courses fast enough. You will not find a better or smarter teacher. I can't believe it took me so long to find out about these courses on Udemy.

I took this course just to force some useful practice with JavaScript. I worked a treat. It reinforced the common principles and helped with the repetition of the syntax. The tutor is engaging and very knowledgeable and worked through his own mistakes in real-time. /the gaming principles were very interesting and fun. I will definitely be making some small games in future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course and got so much out of it; I have followed a number of courses on Udemy, and to be honest I have been happy with all of them, but this course and what I have got from it is on another level. First of all the games created are fun in and of themselves, and they make really good coding exercises altering them and making slight corrections and additions. I had used Javascript before, but I really enjoyed that section of the course; it is a really good overview, and I learned a lot of new things and new approaches (both in Javascript and coding generally). The usage of the AI and how to prompt it has opened up so many ideas for me. Using it for similar projects to this course and exploring other coding ideas is excellent, but I have found a lot of the methods in interacting with it apply to many other things too (historical research, business ideas, music, language learning); the processes taught in this course have enabled me to get some brilliant results.

This is the second of Andre's courses I have completed and this course is excellent. Andre goes out of his way to explain things in detail and always answers your questions. Andre's subject knowledge and experience is tremendous. Andre's books and game dev skills have been recommend by people like Steve Wozniak (cofounder of Apple) and Nolan Bushnell (founder of Atari), both of whom wrote forwards to Andre's books on game development, which are included in the course resources for free. The books alone are worth much more than the price of this course. If you are a skilled JavaScript and HTML developer, you can skip forward a little in the lectures. I took the time to go through them all because I felt like I needed a refresher. But if you don't want or need a review, you need to start with Lesson 1 and skip forward. I think Lesson 26 (graphics and animation) is a good place to pick up from.

This course doesn’t deserve less than 5 stars. I mean, his content is priceless. It’s truth that sometimes could be slow but it’s the way that Andre can reach also people than never have been in touch with code, and he warns when advance people should skip some classes. Sometimes could benefit you and sometimes slow down, but it’s undeniable his effort, passion and dedication with his classes and all his students (not only in this course but also in Crash Course Electronic). Thanks Andre for spreading your knowledge with the world and I’m anxious to see the next one you are preparing for next year. It’s dangerous to make a course that involves IA due to his fast evolution, but this course give you more than a good grasp to make your owns videogame even if IA grows more (furthermore, Andre works hard and try to make bonus to not being out of date).

He uses canvas and its 2d context to draw graphics (no WebGL, no shader programs). The first part is a bit boring, but approachable. More than half of the videos is about basic JavaScript. The second part about ChatGPT is not engaging. He shows the prompts that generate basic templates of games, but the final polishing and skinning is done offline. At the end he shows a game and reads through its code. This part is boring as hell

Oh just awesome! I used to program games in basic and loved this kind of stuff, especially the math and the how-to tips and tricks with paint programs and pixel editors. A lot of stuff today is done for you which takes away from the magic. learning how stuff works under the hood brings the excitement back.

By Chris Wardell on 11/16/2023

Very glad that I found and completed this course. Andre covers a broad range of topics building up to making complete games. The topics are covered in such a way that a beginner would find them approachable, yet those with more experience will still learn something new. The course is a great way to start exploring the use of AI as a coding assistant. I am looking forward to his future courses.

By Rita Costa on 11/8/2023

The course is awesome. The content is easy to watch since you don't have to stop to write code during the video or to code along, the code you will find on the resources is more than enough for you to work on, test and tweak. You can jump around the episodes and everything will still make sense, there is always a short intro on what's going on, just keep watching. There is math and physics theory in the course, the useful parts, explained in an easy way, that was delightful to watch, I'm not a math fan but this was really easy to understand, thank you for drawing it :) I've just finished it and my next mini AI game is about to go live.
