Course Description

Moving from an individual contributor role into management is one of the toughest transitions in any career. As an engineer, technician, programmer, or maker of any kind, you’re rewarded for what you accomplish. As a manager, you’re evaluated on what your team accomplishes. The skills that made you successful in your technical role are not the same skills you’ll need to succeed as a leader.

That gap trips up countless talented professionals: some find themselves passed over for promotions, while others step into management only to struggle and get pushed back into maker roles. This course is designed to help you bridge that gap with clarity, confidence, and a clear roadmap forward.

Who this course is for:

  • Engineers, programmers, and technicians preparing for or recently promoted into leadership.

  • Manufacturing and technical professionals who want to advance their careers into supervisory or managerial roles.

  • Any individual contributor in a technical field who wants to develop the essential skills of management.

What you’ll learn:

In this course, you’ll explore 10 key strategies that every new manager needs:

  • Data Analysis – understanding problems and making better decisions.

  • Team Building & Collaboration – developing soft skills that help you inspire others.

  • Sales & Negotiation – learning how to advocate for your ideas and win resources.

  • Written & Verbal Communication – becoming a clear, influential communicator.

  • Time Management – mastering prioritization and productivity.

  • Business Finance – understanding the “language of business” so your ideas gain traction.

  • Goal Setting – using proven methods like SMART goals and the flywheel effect.

  • Problem-Solving Frameworks – applying Lean, Six Sigma, and Design Thinking.

  • Professional Development – certifications, lifelong learning, and building your resume.

  • Servant Leadership – the mindset shift that separates effective leaders from micromanagers.

Each section combines key concepts with practical tools, curated resources, and clear next steps. You’ll also gain access to recommended books, articles, and even other Udemy courses to deepen your learning.

It's certainly eye-opening. Truly, management is a different cup of coffee, so just having a background in engineering is not enough. I'll keep to heart these 10 (+1) strategies so that I can better myself and find my career as a manager in the future. If there's one thing I can comment about this session, it would be better with visuals or something. The content of the session itself is interesting, but I think it would get more attention if there are visuals, although I know how hard that would be... Thank you again for this wonderful session.

So far so good. Have been inspire by the Flywheel concept. Certain things have to be done over and over again. Lastly, goal setting, not only at work but also in our personal lives...awesome

This course gave me practical strategies to transition from a contributor to a confident manager. It sharpened my leadership skills, improved my strategic thinking, and prepared me to take on greater responsibilities with clarity and confidence.

Some of the concepts laid out seem obvious, others are certainly known from direct experience, but in this course they are all laid out clearly and well organized, in a colloquial form that is very pleasant to follow.

This is so good , to the point everything is so important and helpful . Just cant stop going from one video to the next. Feels like a BCom in a nutshell. Very helpful and makes you want to research and learn more on all the topics.

Very good course; I wish this had been taught much of this in school. One thing that you may want to consider adding is working in some material on "mentorship"; both in finding a professional, especially when you are starting out, but also becoming a mentor as well.

Great touch-up on a variety of topics. Low key an ad for his other courses, which is not bad since Ray is a fantastic instructor, and I recommend you look into his other courses :)

This is a reminder that learning is a life time. I increased my knowledge with some new information and reinitiated some I already knew. I enjoyed the class.

This course should be on every subject matter specialist's list. Future business owners will especially benefit from the lessons. Trust Ray's advice. Your current position probably shows frustration points. As a manager and leader, you can work with your team to make things better. Let this course help you get to the other side of the fence. It's unpainted. You can start fresh!

This course is a 'trailhead' course, which introduces the production professional to the steps needed to advanced towards management. Each lecture introduces the necessary paths of advancement, complete with works cited and supplemented materials. I wish I had known about this course years ago, as there is some excellent career advice. Thanks Ray!
