Hi, I'm 15 years old and because of this course I was able to make my own first fully functional android game. I love the way in which J. A. Whye teaches. This was a free course but its really good for getting started with CoronaSDK. I wish that i could afford "Beggining Game Development" to get more knowledge but i'd learned enough in this course that i could jump into game development and start making games for Google Play Store. I really recommend this course. Thanks a lot

I was playing a game that was simply collecting cookies and i just HAD to learn how it was done. I was told it was using Corona SDK so i took a look online at free courses and came across this. Now, as a beginner with zero knowledge, i was sceptical about how this was going to work out. Nervous in fact, that it may be too quick to keep up but i got to say that this guy absolutely nailed teaching this for beginners. I've re-done this course twice and the second time round, I've got myself a working game and even more so, it's got me wanting to delve deeper into the code and start adding to it already. He was right. If you type the code in manually yourself, you learn a lot quicker and in the space of less than a week, I think I've finally got the hang of the basics. For free, you cannot fault this course, and if you're interested in learning LUA/CoronaSDK... this is definitely your starting point. The guy is engaging and you can't help but smile as you follow him along. J.A if you're reading this, thank you man. You've probably just set me up to learn my own game now. I'm no longer afraid. PS. You sound like Jon Favreau (iron man movies) guessing you're from Queens? xD

An excellent course, within the hour you will be making your first game without training wheels - this course is straight to the point, no long winded videos yammering on about what an IF statement does - just straight in there, the wheres/whats/hows to get your first game running - and for most who already know how to code (in any language) this is a super quick start which will have you playing your own game in literally minutes. best udemy course i have done so far! its only a shame that its free, cause Jay deserves something for this one!

I think the course was great for the price and I now feel ready to start experimenting myself. The only challenge, was towards the end it started to speed up considerably and it was quite difficult to follow what had been done. However, that probably helped with the learning as I had to try to work out where I might have gone wrong. I have only a very very basic understanding of code, and felt this course was comfortable for even non-coders.

This is an excellent intro to using Lua with the Corona SDK. I'm fairly new to learning programming languages but I can already tell that Lua is simple and powerful when combined with Corona SDK. I'll probably be using Corona to make future multi-platform games. Xcode is great for writing in Lua but the Outlaw IDE (Integrated Development Environment) included in the video is a fine alternative as well.

By Gary Thomas on 3/19/2015

I started this course with absolutely 0% Lua experience, and finished this course in a few hours with a very good understanding of Lua as a game coding language. Up until now I have also never used Corona SDK, and it is pretty decent as a beginner and advanced SDK, if you check the games that have been made with it on their website, you are sure to recognise a title or two! I have relatively good previous coding experience with Java, C++, Python and HTML, which did help a lot in understanding variables, functions and general coding practice etc. However they are all briefly but efficiently explained in the first section of this course. Also with this course you get the complete game source, and loyalty-free graphics, from the beginning, which will help immensely if you ever get stuck. Thank you very much Mr. J. A. Whye, top notch stuff!

This course is pretty good. It carved a valuable path through Corona and Lua. However, the end wasn't good. If you're going to include an exercise, at least review the code for it. This is left as a teaser. I'd rather just have been directed to the Beginning Game Development in the first place (before taking the course). If you're going to cover code, then do it. And while I don't mind a comment or 2 regarding the affiliate software, I'd say you went overboard. Respect that udemy.com is serving up your courses.

I liked this course, it was fun and I did learn something, but, I felt it was incomplete. I know it was free, but, the instructor could have explained those last 18 lines of code, it would have taken just 1 more video, I'm sure it wouldn't have been too much of a big deal to make 1 more video for this course. That being said, I did like Jay's style of teaching, and, I did sign up for his more in depth course on building games. To be fair, I also got a discount on that course so it only cost me $9.00.

Isn't that what you want in a crash course? Well Jay delivers. He gets to the point and helps you get started fast (took me less than a day to complete). That's not what earned him five stars though; he goes beyond /just/ the learning experience. Jay makes game development fun.. as it should be! Keeping in mind this is a crash course, and recommended for those who already have knowledge in another language (such as PHP, JS, etc), Jay will get you started in no time. He goes over installation, setup, and core development. Next, I'll be taking his more advanced courses. I highly recommend this course to developers looking to get into mobile app development (:

I don't have any experience in game development. I want to learn because I want to create from simple to complicated ones (in a later time) for my kids who loved video games, but some online courses out there are way too expensive and too many things to take just to learn a simple game. I took this course just to see if its right for me and to see if I will learn. Guess what, YES I've learned! Mr Whye is such a great instructor, funny, easy to understand and it is easy to follow his course (you won't get bored). For you to learn you need to repeat each sections, follow each steps, understand it and go a long with him. I may not be perfect but every time I made an error I go back, and check his codes and my codes to see if I've missed anything. I definitely recommend this course and yes I'm looking forward to do another course which is Beginning Mobile Game Development by J. A. Whye.
