Godot 2D Academy: Create a Brotato style game with Godot 4 (Udemy.com)

Master 2D Game Development with the Latest Version of Godot and GDScript

Created by: Gianny Dantas

Last updated June 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 175 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Gianny Dantas teaches one project from start to finish: a Brotato-style survivor game in Godot 4. The syllabus shows about 13 hours across 100 lectures, split into player, enemies, melee and ranged weapons, a spawner, upgrade and shop panels, character selection, a sound manager and save game. It is not a first Godot course. The requirements ask for a solid foundation, and the reviewers who liked it most were people who had finished a beginner course or already coded elsewhere.

Praise centers on pace and code structure. Reviewers like that nothing gets over-explained, and one praised learning classes and components, another the way Resources control game data. One software engineer said it doesn't treat the viewer like a beginner. The complaints are specific. Some found the audio very quiet, and one reviewer disliked how the videos are cut into small pieces. Another got a different result from the tutorial and blamed a Godot bug. A designer new to coding finished it but called it advanced.

The course was last updated in June 2026, with a save game section and improved audio, so it targets current Godot 4. At 4.5 stars from 175 ratings and about 2,100 students, it is small but well liked, with most ratings at five stars. It suits intermediate learners who want a real project and a tidy architecture. Total beginners should start with a basics course first.

Best forDevelopers who know basic Godot or another engine and want one big, well-structured survivor game.
Skip it ifYou are new to Godot or programming and need the engine and GDScript explained from zero.

Pros

  • Teaches scene inheritance, components and Resources in one game, with a coding style one reviewer wants to replicate
  • Quick pace with little padding, which experienced coders say suits them
  • Covers weapons, spawner, shop, upgrade panels, item tiers and save game in one project
  • Updated June 2026 for current Godot 4, with source code and assets included

Cons

  • Assumes a solid Godot 4 base, and newer coders found it hard going
  • Some reviewers say the audio is quiet, and the short clips can be hard to follow
  • No quizzes or coding exercises, and one reviewer hit a result that differed from the tutorial
I am a Software Engineer who already knows how to code, so I wanted a course which is quick, direct to the point, where the viewer isn't treated like a complete beginner, and where I could learn by creating a game from scratch.

Listed as All Levels, but the requirements ask for solid Godot 4 basics. Best for confident beginners and up.

Great course, having completed a few beginner courses I was looking for more advanced learning and this course delivers. Everything is explained clearly and steps you through each concept. I've learned a lot, thank you, appreciated.

I think this is the best course for those who have the basic about both programming concept and how Godot engine works. I, especially, could learn about how to use class in Godot and component by making unit, player character, and enemy object etc. I've completed about a quarter of the whole course and am pretty satisfied by the instructor's way of teaching so far. I'd definitely recommend this course!!

This is a seriously incredible course! I've taken a couple others on 2D Godot games, which were good, but I feel so much more comfortable now with building features, animations, using resources to control game data / behavior, and I feel like the coding style is also something to replicate. Thanks so much for creating this!

It was a great course, exactly what I was looking for. I am a Software Engineer who already knows how to code, so I wanted a course which is quick, direct to the point, where the viewer isn't treated like a complete beginner, and where I could learn by creating a game from scratch. And I can say that this course checks everything I just listed. I learned how to work with godot and now I'm confident in creating my own games. Thank you for giving this course for us Gianny, I wish you a happy new year! :)

*Editing my review to be fair to the instructor based on what he's teaching and what the content is actually for. For what you get and the types of games you can learn to create, and fast, I've updated my review. Thank you very much for the course.

1. The voice/mic is way too soft. Big problem. 2. Spent like 8 videos to get to starting the project. Still trying to keep an open mind but if I could get a rebate button in a second and get my $ back I would.

By Jonathan Alcala on 10/17/2025

This course is great because it doesn't spend ten minutes explaining everything, I can progress quickly and anything now covered in this course is likely something that could be handled with a quick google search

By Rodney Burns on 7/26/2025

Great course! Felt a bit rushed at times, but that's what the pause button is for :) It covers everything you would expect to see in such a game, in a fairly clear and straightforward manner.

By Almir Mendes Ventura on 7/21/2025

By Stanley Long on 7/14/2025

Great course! I would definitely recommend it to anyone that wants to learn how to make a brotato-clone game!
