How to Draw and Sketch for Absolute Beginners 2 Perspective (Udemy.com)

Easy Step by Step introduction to learning to draw Perspective

Created by: Rich Graysonn

Last updated November 2022

Our take

Based on the ratings of 525 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.

Rich Graysonn teaches perspective drawing from the ground up: one, two and three point, plus short looks at atmospheric and isometric perspective. It runs about 25.5 hours across 145 lectures, and about 7,100 students have enrolled. Part 1 isn't required, only the ability to draw basic cubes, cylinders and spheres. It's aimed at beginners, art students, and people drawing for comics, games or illustration. There are no quizzes, so the practice is whatever you draw along with him.

Most reviewers like the teaching. They call Rich a knowledgeable teacher who breaks steps down well, and they like the variety of scenes used as examples. Of 525 ratings, 301 are five stars and 33 are one or two stars. The complaints are consistent: lessons run long and wander, and some openings in the one and two point sections are confusing because he doesn't say what the lesson will cover. One reviewer says the content could fit in a third of the length. Another found the tablet's automatic perspective tool hard to follow with a ruler and pencil.

The last update was November 2022, so it's several years old, though the rules of perspective don't change much. The second half of the syllabus is labeled as the original course and goes back over one, two and three point perspective, so expect some repetition. It's a paid course, and the length gives plenty of practice time. Pick it if slow, repeated exercises suit you. With less patience, a shorter perspective course will probably serve better.

Best forBeginners who can draw basic cubes and cylinders and want lots of repeated practice in one, two and three point perspective.
Skip it ifYou want a fast, tight overview, or you draw with a ruler and pencil and dislike tablet-only demos.

Pros

  • Reviewers say Rich breaks each step down clearly and is easy to follow
  • Varied scene examples show how each perspective type is used, and are easy to practice on your own
  • Covers one, two and three point, plus atmospheric and isometric basics
  • Part 1 and drawing software are not required, only the ability to draw basic forms

Cons

  • Lessons run long and wander; one reviewer says it could be a third of the length
  • The back half is the older version of the course, so one, two and three point are covered twice
  • Some demos use a tablet's automatic perspective tool without showing the pencil equivalent
Very helpful in understanding perspective! Very thorough and in depth explanations with great examples. Thanks for the class!

Aside from being an artist as long as I can remember I started offering a few tutorials on Youtube. Little did I know that by teaching people the fundamentals of art and anatomy i'd begin a new dimension to my career. Being a working freelance illustrator with a youtube channel is hard work, and I wouldn't change a thing. I steadily expanded my work from clients who needed branding to doing work on indie games and apps. i enjoy helping artists and non artist achieve that next level. The road to artistic expression and freedom is paved with hard work and dedication. There are setbacks and monsters to slay , but the rewards are great.

As a total beginner to perspective drawings and sketching I admit this course has a value. The instructor is knowledgeable with the subject in perspectives and gives good pieces of advice. As a total beginner. I'd recommend this course for those who are total beginners in perspective drawings and want to supplement and enhance their artistic and graphic design skills (which was one of the reasons I took the course) and add this course to their collections of many other courses in sketching and drawing.

Got so much from Beginners 1, I am jumping in to Beginners 2 and so excited! This has not been just about learning to draw, it is also about finding my unique style, about finding confidence even when I don't hit the mark, and my skills still increase. This was about finding my way to express myself through drawing and sketching. Thanks so much

I felt that Rich is a great teacher, and course content (including advance section) covers enough detail to make one feel confident about perspective. One highlight for me was the variety of examples to show how a particular perspective can be used to create different types of scenes. The examples are fun, easy to follow along, and easy to practice on own. I finished the course quicker than I expected because I watched most of the videos at a higher speed (as the normal speed was too slow for me). Overall, highly recommended.

This is my review while I have not completed 2D perspective. This is an excellent course on the subject. The reason that I only gave 4 1/2 was confusing opening sessions in 1 point and 2 point perspective. It is entertaining to watch Rich sketching and showing what works or do not work with perspective when the session is about to end. It is more effective teaching if Rich can give a brief overview what student is about to learn from the session. For example, I had to complete watching 4 sessions in 2 point perspective to realize that it is not interesting to apply strict 2 point perspective in cityscape sketching but it may be fine to apply in interior design/sketch. Finally, Rich's approach in teaching the advance section is not very structure and formal, but what he taught in that section is very practical and it helps me quite a lot to understand perspective and scale in space.

I am very disappointed that everything is done on his tablet. He just assumes we all know what is going on with his "automatic" perspective tool and he just clicks away and lines appear. My ruler and pencil do NOT know what he is doing. I've taken other classes of his and have LOVED them. This one, not so much:(

By Simon Van Bockstal on 1/15/2020

The material is presented in a very thorough manner. I also like that the instructor gives you a lot of homework to drill home certain points. Be warned, however, that this is indeed a true beginner's course. The instructor assumes you have absolutely zero spatial awareness, so if you have any experience working in 3d or, well, a functioning pair of eyes, you'll find the pace to be a bit slow. Because he's often drawing and explaining things at the same time, a lot of the drawings are rather sloppy, sometimes infuriatingly so. All in all it's still a good course. I'm happy I enrolled and still learned quite a bit. I just feel like the material could have been condensed a bit more.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class on perspective. Its great for beginners. Rich Graysonn is short, sweet, and to the point. I personally felt some more detail could have been included on the more involved areas such as 3 point perspective but again, it is labeled for beginners and that is exactly what Rich gets across in this course, basic fundamentals and then some.

By Alia Ageman on 2/3/2018

It was a quite basic tutorial on perspective. Definitely for beginners but I loved his practical examples which gave different ways to use perspective in drawing, definitely not the usual treatment. It really helped nail down why we do boxes and grids, as he shows HOW to use these in real drawings. I learnt about using the horizon line in my cartoon drawing which really helped me as I was struggling with that particular concept despite having read reams of books on perspective. I think I'll go back to those other books now with a deeper understanding of what they are talking about and get a better understanding of the concepts. I think if he worked out where he was going rather than doing things on the fly, might be less confusing for beginners. Prepare before the lecture so he doesnt make mistakes. It was a bit distracting. Great beginners tutorial tbough.

By Valeria Antoniali on 5/11/2017

The teacher is well prepared on the subject, it is definitely a useful course for beginners especially if you follow the lessons by doing the exercises. I give 4 start because I would have liked a bit more structured approach, lots of time is lost by the teacher trying to fix the drawing, or because he forgets what he was saying... The information is good but the exposition is not top. A good starting point to learn perspective though!

This is hands down a must take course for anyone wanting to learn perspective or to refresh their "perspective" on the topic. The instructor is an excellent teacher. His voice, pacing of the content, and overall personality makes the learning process very enjoyable. I've been a hobbyist artist for many years and have always struggled with perspective. Even with some of the books I've bought and flipped through while attempting to learn perspective. I never had that ah ha moment. Perspective just never clicked for me like I wanted it to. In a matter of a weekend. Literally a weekend. I now have a full grasp of one, two, and three point perspective. With the knowledge and tools provided from the course I can continue honing my skills. I'm more confident than I've ever been to purse my artistic endeavors in ways I've always wanted. Now I'm by no means an expert after 48 hrs. Nor am I rendering breathtaking images. Yet. However, I am grinning from ear to ear at my progress as I continue to impress myself after each practice session. If you honestly do the work and take your time you'll be amazed at how far you can go. Like I said, this is truly a great course but more importantly it's really fun too.
