Java Design Patterns and Architecture (Udemy.com)

Fantastic course on Design Pattern by John. Every concept was explained in well manner. So anyone with having a basic JAVA concepts cleared, can refer this as a start of their design pattern journey. Wish John, could update this course with latest technologies instead of Swing as these days its quite out fashioned.

I like the way John explains everything to the smallest detail and sometimes even if he writes just a few lines of code you can learn a lot about the object in the lecture. He kind of tries to teach the things the way he understands them and that gives the student another perspective and a viewpoint of the topic.

Good Java course on Patterns. A little scattered at times but touched on topics of significant interest to me -- JDBC and how to use with Swing etc. The sections on Junit (Testing) were quite worthwhile. JUnit is probably worth at least a short course as a standalone. You should know some Java to make this worthwhile. I did the course with NetBeans which I think is more appropriate for this material. The Testing did not work well with NetBeans since tests are run in random order. You need to use suites to fix the order -- for example.

Instructor was repetitive - he mentioned his other courses all the time. Every time when he spoke about something that wasn't part of the course, he did a one minute break for mentioning that that is in his other course on www.caveofprogramming.com and we shouldn't worry about that - necessary the first or the second time, but at 10th really annoying. Structure of this course was a bit chaotic. Pretty much everything was explained on one, growing through course example. Some of videos are nice, like Singleton or Brief history of software design but some of them are really messy.

It gives an overview how the software design works for people who have never worked as soft dev. In my opinion very good staff !!! And after I has been gone thru the half of the course I still think that way :) Addionally I the design patterns give me a better understand what the programming is about. Thank you John!!!

Great course but for me I got a bit lost in parts due to lack of knowledge, maybe some simple diagrams during the course would help to show the flows and how things are interconnected. There are some diagrams that John draws but Id like to see a few more so I can picture more of how things fit together and what sits where.

The instructor is very thorough by including both theory and practical. Having the theory upfront and gaining that knowledge going into the actual programming portion is very beneficial and makes the material much easier to digest. The instructor is also very clear, concise, and knowledgeable. He makes the course material very approachable and doesn't speak at a level above the student. He increments the material in a meaningful way. Not one video seems like it is covering too much material. By keeping everything neat and separated, the course is very easy to follow.

Cant complain for a free course. Instructor is an amazing teacher and seems to be a very down to earth guy. Really fun and easy to follow. Places for improvement that I could think of is that a lot of the material it seems the instructor just shoots from his hips (though with pretty good accuracy from his extensive experience) but lacks conciseness and planning. Some of the code cannot be thought of as industry best practise such as using DAO directly inside the controller, etc, and I think it is not good to teach something unless it is well thought out. Overall, I had learned a lot about Java from his course and is grateful for his teaching.

The course is a good intro to some design patterns with Java. For a free course, it is absolute bargain. Still it need to cover more design patterns, at least those one from GoF. And I think it deserve some more serious examples to illustrate real usage of the patterns. Do not get me wrong - some examples here are fine, but the other ones are just silly.

John makes it seem so easy. His explanations are clear and practical. I use these courses to get a framework in my head into which I can assimilate more detailed information. I can see where it is all headed after listening to John. I also plan to go back to the lectures for various topics on an as-needed basis to refresh when I'm coding in earnest. Great value -- its free, but the time is well spent too.
