Course Description
The Covid pandemic forced almost every company to require or encourage remote work. It is becoming increasingly clear that this change in where we do our work is becoming the norm. One of the great miracles of the twenty-first century is the declining importance of borders and distance. The internet has made knowledge universal and is enabling talent to be developed in every corner of the globe and country without prejudice. This means that any company can bring talent together in virtual teams to develop products and plans and accomplish shared goals regardless of their location. But, enabling these teams to work well together is a skill that every manager needs to develop to succeed in the new world of virtual collaboration.
Leading Virtual or Remote Teams is designed to build the skills of virtual collaboration and teamwork. It covers issues around the use of virtual meeting technology, including a comprehensive survey of meeting software, user advice and recommendations. But, the primary focus of this course is on the human side, the skills of facilitating and participating in virtual teams. While it is important for all team leaders and facilitators to develop good meeting facilitation skills, there are unique challenges when team members are not co-located. This course addresses those challenges and provides advice based on the available research and the instructor's many years of experience facilitating virtual meetings.

His expertise is derived from hands on experience creating change in the culture of more than a hundred organizations. Among his consulting clients have been Honda, Corning, Shell Oil Company, Amoco and Texaco, Air Canada, Eastman Chemicals, Xerox, Harris Corporation, Chick-fil-A, Merck and Upjohn Pharmaceuticals, United Technologies, Metropolitan Life and Landmark Communications.
He began his work in youth prisons after recognizing that the learning system in the organization had exactly the opposite of its intended effect – increasing, rather than decreasing, dysfunctional behavior. For four years he worked to redesign the prison system by establishing the first free- economy behind prison walls, where each inmate had to earn points, maintain a checking account, pay rent and pay for everything he desired. It resulted in measurable improvements in behavior. This was his first organizational transformation.

I found this very helpful and straightforward. Please always try to go straight to the point. The facilitator has to have a set of skills, and it's not easy as it seems, right? Leadership is something that needs time to learn and we need to read and listen a lot. Thanks for sharing such valuable knowledge

I recommend this course for the seasoned facilitator and/or novice. As a facilitator returning to the workplace after a career break, this course was a perfect match for me. So many great points regarding team roles and responsibilities, meeting preparation, and documentation templates - agenda, meeting decisions, and action plans included for download.

A very informative and comprehensive discussion on facilitation skills shared is worth applying. I agree that facilitators should clarify the substance of ideas and recognition of team players' opinions. In this case, a sense of belongingness and an individual's worth is given importance for collective shared responsibility.

In a fully remote environment for so much longer than anticipated, it is easy to lose your way and get distracted by your home life. I found this course to be important to help revisit fundamentals and refocus on what my team needs.

There are only two people on my team. But we sorely needed some way to run better meetings. Where action items are planned and followed up on in subsequent meetings. The Agenda file is invaluable for that. We will also be trying out turning on our cameras, and rotating the facilitator/note taker roles to boost engagement.

The first third of the course were very helpful with dealing with remoteness. The main part actually deals with handling meetings and facilitation - elements which I hadn't expected, but will probably come in uselful anyway. If there is a downside - I would have like copies of the screenshots in written format to annotate.

This course was an eye opening for me. I didn't like virtual meeting before because I am old school and I like meetings in person. The communication on the 21st Century has changed and I have to adapt to change. This course was very helpful and now I can practice and be comfortable attending or creating virtual meetings.

Some of the lessons felt like a new concept, but in fact it was just greatly ignored. Because of this course, my mind and perspective is now refreshed in meeting virtually. I would definitely recommend this course. But I do suggest, if possible kindly provide a sample video, with the a virtual team assuming those different roles you just discussed - more like a simulation that we could observe.

I have taken several of Larry's courses now. This one was a micro lesson out of Team Facilitation. It did have good stuff about Virtual Meetings at the beginning - I wish he would have expounded more on the actual use of the technology in a meeting instead of just the facilitation Soft Skills. But still valuable.

I gave this course a 5-Star rating because it is good stuff, and because it is red hot relevant. I always enjoy and greatly benefit from Larry's excellent material, thought, and presentation. He expects you do DO something. Wouldn't that be nice? I highly recommend this course to anyone who is either leading or is a member of a virtual team. I agree with Larry's assertion that understanding the role of the leader/facilitator of virtual team work makes you a better team member/contributor!
