Course Description

WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO LEARN:

Design compelling, engaging video game levels like a professional. To do this you need game design skills, and if you want to stand out from the crowd, you need to build your own levels and present your skills to potential clients / employers.

Drawing on 30 years of game development, experience in art and game design, and a game design book published by Pearson Education (not included), I will show you how to create your own game ready levels from scratch. You will begin with learning the basics of creating bubble diagrams and sketching on paper to iterate quickly, then onto creating a 3D game environment presented  in Unity. You will learn to use pro builder and pro grids to aid in your level creations.

DESIGN / STORY / EMOTION:

Creating levels for games, is at the heart of this course, but it's also about the ideas and the game design process that spawn the levels and worlds in which we play our games. The story you can tell through level design and the emotion your scene can invoke is also key to creating a successful level, and I will show you techniques on how you can deliver that in this course.

DESIGN PRINCIPALS:

I will teach you over 30 design principles and level creation techniques that level designers use today in top selling AAA games. Principles like; Design From the Core; Foreshadowing; Exposure; Layering; Immersion; Fight or Flight; Up the Ante; Pacing; Progression; Player Feedback; Situational Awareness; Scalable Rewards; Difficulty Ramping; Enemy Placement; Loot Placement; Player Choice; Colour as a Design tool, and many, many more.

You will learn how to build a level in a 3D environment and install a character controller so you can explore and see your level from the players perspective, and come to realise what an iterative process level design actually is.

This course is perfect for anybody seriously wishing to pursue a career as a Level Designer in the video game industry and would like to follow the process of level design by building an entire white box scene using various design principles and techniques.

It's suitable for beginners to Intermediate levels. The more advanced designers may find that you're going over old ground in some areas, but it can still be a worthy refresher course. Over time, the course will get regular updates and keep on trend with industry techniques and standards.

PLEASE NOTE: This IS NOT AN ART COURSE. Level design is a very specific discipline within the games industry, and here we are primarily focusing on highly detailed, level creation process in white box form. I am also not a programmer so there is no prgramming in this course. However, I am going to add an additional section to cover some basic scripting at a later date, as an extra section to this course.

The instructor provides a brief but comprehensive overview of level design. He covers various topics, such as storytelling/narration and color theory. The core of the course—designing, developing, and implementing the design idea in Unity—is explained in detail and in real time. He provides good insight into his design process. This makes it easy for the course participant to adapt the content to their design ideas. The instructor speaks clearly and understandably, so even non-native English speakers can follow the course. The course provides a good foundation, also with a view to studying game design. I would have given the course a full 5 out of 5 stars if the instructor had gone into more detail on the topic of scripting, such as what scripting knowledge is expected of a level designer (as a junior)—apart from implementing a navmesh. All in all, a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED course.

This course is overall well-structured and a great introduction, especially for beginners in game development who want to learn about Level Design using Unity. If you enjoy learning through examples, you'll likely appreciate the approach taken here. That said, I sometimes found it challenging to fully grasp certain concepts, as they were not always clearly defined or introduced in a formal way. The course relies heavily on a single main example, which can make it harder to generalize the ideas being taught. I personally would have appreciated more academic-style explanations and clearer definitions of the key level design concepts being presented. Still, the course serves as a good starting point, and the instructor’s pace is slow and steady, which is especially helpful for non-native English speakers. That’s definitely a plus.

Highly enjoyed the course and learned a lot of good stuff to incorporate into my project. For a background, I'm primarily a programmer, yet working on my indie game in my free time. I already created a GDD and implemented basic game mechanics and then thought about how make the actual levels in the game engaging and fun. This course shows not only how create some level but teaches the overall principles how to build a level while keeping a clean and followable structure - a working workflow. I'm now much more confident to start designing my own levels. What is missing though, the course ended little abrupt. The last section promised some more videos to follow like basic scripting, UI and so on. Not a big deal for me but could feel little incomplete for a total newbie, to get some basic interactivity going. In the course the author also foreshadows a follow up course to this one where he would like to take this same created level and enrich it from the game artist point of view. I would totally follow up with this to see the thought process and workflow of the artist how he would proceed, given the constraints of the level. Unfortunately, the last course update was 4 years ago, so it will probably not going to happen. Overall though, the course delivered what the title suggests, so I will totally recommend it.

The course is a little bit basic, and it uses a barebones engine, not a level editor with existing game mechanics, AI, player tools, etc. It showcases the pre-production and whiteboxing phases very well though, and the design principles shown here are result of industry experience. It's just that the whole thing doesn't really come together in the end, as actual gameplay. Having player tools and some basic AI ready would help a great deal in seeing whether a level has a potential to be a fun experience.

I always try to provide a positive and balanced review when asked to do so. I recognize how difficult it is to make tutorial videos / courses, but when asked, I always share my honest opinion, based on my experience with the course. Pros: WOW… this is the type of course you never want to end. This course was SPECTACULAR…!!! I’ve been searching for a good Level Design course for a long time and none that I found were what I would consider - great. However, this course is beyond great. I’m going to watch this course in its entirety at least one more time and try to take screenshots and notes of key areas in order to create a “How To Guide" for my personal use. Cons: 1). Although it wasn’t a huge problem the instructor uses a 2018 version of Unity3d, which was outdated by the time I took the course in 2023. I wish the author would have used Unreal Engine with its Grid Builder tools. I believe that would have been a far better application for “blocking out” a level. 2). I wish the author would have created a downloadable written “How To Guide" covering the main key elements of his instruction. The author does provide reference material, which were very good, but a more organized step-by-step guide would have been great. — That said, that does NOT detract from the course. There is NOTHING about this course that I found to be negative - not one thing!

Generally good theory, though a bit longwinded. I enjoyed working through the course, though it seemed that by the end there were supposed to be more lectures. Still, I think I got most of what I was supposed to get out of it, and I can supplement with other courses. Kevin breaks things down in a way that is easy to understand, and I enjoyed his design. I think his teaching style would work better in person, but he's personable enough, and it really helps to set the playback to 1.5x to 2.0x.

Enjoyable deep voice. Fast enough to follow. Design principles were beneficial but some topics stay shallow. A good example is the lack of information about the Composition. A deeper explanation of the concept and more examples would be welcomed. Also, I've loved to watch how the teacher is working but often after one or two maneuvers into Unity I understood the method but the teacher kept going on and show more of the same technic. (I see it as a negative point certainly because I am not a beginner.) Globally, I enjoyed the class and I learned several new technics that I will use in my everyday work.

The instructor is highly knowledgeable and I have been searching for a course like this for a long time now. As in, we have plenty of courses that teach us how to use a software or an engine or a tool. But few actually explain the entire workflow pipeline that a person, in this case, the level designer, has to commit to in a studio environment in order to complete their tasks. One small suggestion I have and that is that at times, the instructor's voice becomes too low that it stops being audible. It didn't happen a lot but when it did, I was unable to hear anything. So, just a suggestion that it would be great if the future content on this course as well as other courses don't have this issue. But otherwise, a great course. Thanks!

I'm almost halfway through the course and I have already learned so much useful information, the teacher seems to really know his stuff, can't wait to get to the good stuff where we actually make our level, the courses teaches you a lot of design theory to get you prepared for later. Really nice course and I recommend it if you wanna learn about game design, there aren't any courses that cover this topic so deeply

This is my third course with Kevin and I can say WOW. I knew that he worked in alone in the dark the new nightmare game which was great and it is still one of my favorite games and it is a dream for me to be taught by a professional game developer who knows about it all. Even if I had small ideas, but they were scattered and need to be organized so I know what to do later , and this was the course. Furthermore , Kevin always answer any question and take the time to explain with details , this is a gift , thank you and God Bless you And I really wish to see part 2 please :)
