Learn to code by making games in Godot (Udemy.com)

The fun way to start programming

Created by: Christian Koch

Last updated June 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 776 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Christian Koch's course teaches programming through seven small games built in Godot, the free game engine. It starts with an intro to coding in Godot, then moves through a runner, a 2D platformer, a farming game, a monster battle system, a 3D space game, a 3D platformer and a first person shooter. That adds up to about 18 hours over 83 lectures, with no prerequisites listed. It was last updated in June 2026, though one reviewer felt information was missing because the course had not been updated.

Reviewers like the pacing and the structure. Several people new to coding say each game introduces a few ideas and the next one builds on them. One reviewer says it finally explained when to pick Area2D, CharacterBody2D or RigidBody2D, and another says Koch answered questions quickly and thoroughly. One developer coming from Unreal says it got them up to speed on Godot fast. The complaints are consistent too. Two of the 2-star reviews say the audio is either whisper quiet or blown out, and others call the exercises vague, too hard, or built on things taught only afterward.

With 776 ratings averaging 4.8, and 574 of them five stars, this is a well liked starter. It is paid, and one student calls it cheap for what it gives. Take it if you are brand new and want to build things from day one. Skip it if you need deep coverage of one genre, and check the sound on the first lecture before committing.

Best forComplete beginners who want to learn coding by building Godot games, 2D first and then 3D.
Skip it ifYou want depth in one genre, or you can't tolerate quiet, uneven audio on lesson videos.

Pros

  • Each game introduces a few new ideas and builds on the last, so total newcomers say it stays easy to follow
  • Explains when and why to pick Area2D, CharacterBody2D or RigidBody2D, which a reviewer found unclear in other courses
  • Koch answers questions quickly and thoroughly, according to a reviewer who got through the tougher exercises
  • Seven finished games cover 2D, 3D, UI-heavy and shooter mechanics you can reuse in your own projects

Cons

  • Audio is very quiet or uneven, and two low reviews say the volume makes lessons hard to watch
  • Some exercises are called vague or too hard, and one reviewer says they lean on ideas taught only afterward
  • Seven games in about 18 hours means breadth over depth, and the curriculum has no quizzes
It's the best getting-started-with-Godot I've seen. After finishing it I've started a more advanced 3D course which I didn't use to understand at all and now it sounds way clearer.

Beginner level with no requirements. Reviewers say true newcomers keep up, and some experienced coders use it to learn Godot.

Course Description

Do you want to become a programmer? Have you always dreamed of remaking your childhood game? Do you want to learn a cool game engine?

If so, then this course is for you! Via 7 games you will learn the basics of programming and how to create a variety of games. We will create

  1. A basic runner game where you dodge enemies

  2. A platformer where you get to shoot enemies

  3. A Stardew Valley style farming game

  4. A pokemon-inspired monster battle system

  5. A 3D space shooter

  6. A Zelda-inspired 3D platformer

  7. A first person shooter

This will cover the major game mechanics so you can use it to start making your own games. This course will cover both 2D and 3D games; and we will cover how to create more complex UIs for text-based projects.

This course is project based, so you will learn in a hands-on way with practical results and real-world applications. This will also give you cool projects that you can expand and show to your friends. There will be little theory and lots of practice!

This course will use Godot to create the games, which is a free game engine that has become incredibly popular over the last few years. It also has a huge community that is eager to help you; and Godot itself is very easy to learn and lets you build games in a visual way via its node system, you can simple drag and drop elements into your game and make them interactive with just a few lines of code.

Christian Koch

Hello,

My name is Christian Koch and I am a teacher for a range of subjects, primarily Programming in python, economics and maths.

I finished my formal education in 2015 and achieved an MSc in Economic history from the London School in Economics. After that, I went pretty much immediately into teaching and taught at different Business colleges in London and ran lots of different courses that included data science, research methodologies, maths, Economics and history.

I have also worked on several motion graphics videos and recently developed the marketing material for the 'Universities against modern slavery alliance'.

All my courses use animations to explain concepts well and I'd like to think that I am quite good at explaining concepts. Check out my Youtube channel if you want to see how I teach.

Just finished first game in this course but it met my expectation I joined several Godot courses for beginner that teach me how to create some games But I still stuck with the question: When should I select Area2D, CharacterBody2D, RigidBody2D...? What are the differences between them? This course solved it. He explains clearly about why and when, not only above Nodes but other Nodes It can be 5-stars Godot course if the instructor update videos with louder sound Recommend it!

Christian Koch/Clear Code, offers a really good approach to learning the foundational elements of Godot. Instead of going on long tangents explaining best practices, he introduces best practices as they are needed and slides (of which there are very very few) rarely contain more than two sentences. This is a beginners tutorial but burns quick enough for an intermediate programmer it will leave you ready to start experimenting after just completing the first game.

Amazing course. Instructor knows what he’s doing and has a teaching style that just absolutely works with my learning style. Each game teaches new techniques in an incremental way that just makes sense. Other courses (that I still enjoy) go the route of laying down ALL of the ground work before starting to make any games as opposed to this course which I believe covers the absolute basics and then introduces more with each new lesson and game; exactly what my ADHD brain needs to actually soak up knowledge.

I spent a good deal of time trying to find YouTube videos that explained Godot and GDScript while breaking down parts to WHY they did the things that they did, to no avail. Videos either just showed how to build specific systems without explanation or were badly paced. I was a bit dubious about trying a course, but this one was cheap enough that I was willing to give it a chance. My experience with the course has been positive! I felt like all the concepts had been broken down and explained at a basic level, so I could take what I've learned and apply it to my own programming in GDScript. It's been really helpful, especially where I suffer from ADHD, and my attention span can be really finicky. If I forget something, it's so easy to come back to a particular video and run through it all again. I haven't touched the 3D videos yet, as my main focus is understanding and getting something working in 2D first, but I trust this course will get me through the absolute basics. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to understand the fundamentals.

This was a great course and introduction to Godot. Each lesson built on the next and the periodic exercises really helped me to verify that I had learned the most recent concepts. I feel much more proficient with the engine now! My only complaint is actually that sometimes I felt the instructor could have gone deeper into explaining certain topics such as how some of the rotation mechanics work or some of the more complex systems like lighting, background, and shaders worked but that might have been too much for an introduction. Overall, great course, thank you!

This has been a very fun way to learn. If you have extremely basic programming knowledge such as understanding functions, datatypes, etc, then this really shouldn't be a problem. That isn't to say that this course is a breeze either. The exercises given by the instructor are quite challenging. They are almost always based on something you've just learned but with an additional aspect that you are expected to figure out on your own. (Essentially teaching you how to research things on your own.) I really liked this course. You may find that if you're using a different version of Godot than the one used in this course, that you'll run into minor problems here or there but I've been able to remedy these quite easily and this really only helped me learn. Great course!

This was a nice little intro to Godot. I liked that the course has you make a variety of types of games. However, I occasionally had issues with the materials (missing files, etc) that made following along difficult. I sometimes had to create workarounds because of this. I'm a game programmer by trade, so creating my own workarounds was not too difficult for me, but probably beyond what I would expect a beginner to be able to do on their own, and that is the expected audience for the course, so I don't think I would recommend this to a friend who had never done game dev before. But I was able to get a lot out of this course, so yeah! I'm excited to build on what I learned.

By "Introduction to Godot," He really means Godot itself; walking through the entire program and showing how its meant to be approached, demonstrating new ideas with each project. He can be a little opaque in some of his explanations; it's best you take this course alongside some other intro-to-programming courses, and certainly whatever you can find on GDScript. You also need to really focus on the exercises, and practicing whatever you've learned in your own projects whenever you finish something. But if you do all that supplementary stuff, this course is excellent. I'm only 37% complete and I'm already eager to hurry up and finish the whole thing.

At this point I have done a fair number of Udemy tutorials on Python (inc. Pygame), Godot, Unity, and Unreal as well as quite a few YouTube Tutorials. This course definitely deserves 5-stars, and the instructor is quite a good programmer, in general - in fact I first came across his Python Pygame tutorials on YouTube, which are extremely comprehensive. He has also done a very nice 11hr tutorial on YouTube, which I would say probably best to do after this course. The games are generally quite nice and it is a fairly general introduction to Godot while covering still some of the advanced topics. The selection of both 2D and 3D games are nice, and he is very clear and explains that reasons why you do things. I would say that this tutorial course was slightly below my expectations only as far as some of his other material has been above and beyond expectations. What I like about his approaches is that they often feel more intuitive than some of the tutorials on here, often finding simpler or better approaches so even if you have taken a few courses there are still a few things I'd recommend in here meanwhile complete beginners should have no problems following... very good job! Would love to see a slightly more advanced Udemy tutorial series on Godot if you ever wanted to make one, you'd have at least one happy customer...
