You'll learn a lot of advanced coding using GameMaker Language. Here are a few examples of what we'll go through:

• Data structures
• Auto-tiling and tile collisions
• Finite state machines
• NPC movement and textboxes

♦ More about the course ♦

This course is beginner-friendly, however it also contains advanced concepts. It is beginner-friendly in the sense that I explain everything I do so that no one feels lost. The advanced concepts allow you to do more in GameMaker. So, you can take this course regardless of your skill level!

The style by which I teach is to-the-point without any filler or unnecessary talking. I get things done quickly while explaining stuff comprehensively.

♦ Support ♦

Once you're in the course, you can download the project so that you can import it into GameMaker Studio 2 and have a look at all the code.
You can also download all the sprites, scripts and sounds used in the game.

This is very complete and as an intermediate level game maker user/designer, I learned things I didn't know. I was simply seeking for inspiration but this course is much more. It is a practical showing and explaining of how you can make a game with Game Maker. And all this in a very efficient and visual way, better than the courses where someone is inventing a solution on the fly. Many subjects are covered, so this is highly recommended. There is only one small disadvantage which I hate to bring up. The English accent means I have to listen more carefully. Not being a native speaker myself, this is perhaps a bit more difficult for me. But it is easly overcome because, hey, you can pause a video and you will see what you can learn instead of a verbal explanation. Very very good course! Would love to see more of this for example how to build a strategy game or a business/serious app for Android and iOS.

I had the basic knowledge on how to use GMS2. That was extremely helpful. Otherwise I would have been overwhelmed. The course is for people with basic knowledge of Game Maker Studio 2. The ressources were there. But the part were the sprites were setup was often too quickly. The files weren’t named like in the video. The origin point of a sprite and the collision rectangle weren’t clear which led to confusion and unnecessary bugs. I like that the course is precise, and the lectures are short. On the other hand sometimes the explaination was to fast. I knew about the changes with scripts (in GMS2.3), which helped a lot. The basics in this course are helpful. Some of the later added bugfixes did not appear in the final ressources (e. g. new = newgame), so I couldn’t run the full game at the start. Only later I found out how to fix this. This CAN be overwhelming for absolute beginners. The course is a good basis for further game dev steps but for people with 0 knowledge about Game Maker Studio 2 and programming, it might be overwhelming.

First of all, let me say to anyone thinking about taking this course to not be fooled by the 2.5 hour run time. There are only 2.5 hours of lectures, but there is definitely a WHOLE lot packed into each lecture (even the two minute ones). The content of the course is quite good and there is a lot to learn. I must say, though, if you are a beginner, even a near intermediate beginner, this is not the course for you. Gurpreet is obviously very intelligent, and I think he forgets that we mortals may not be able to synthesize, understand, comprehend, follow, etc... exactly what he is saying or what the code he is writing is doing. I would often have to pause the video and analyze the code for a bit to understand what exactly was going on. This is fine, but I wish, as the lecturer, more time was taken to explain. Instead, at times, it almost feels like Gurpreet is speedrunning his lectures; trying to get them done as quickly as possible to make the total lecture time as low as possible. I think I had the lectures paused for more time than any individual lecture ran; trying to catch up to where he was (bouncing between events, managers, rooms, etc...) and copying his code. My main complaint, though, is with the pacing of the lectures. It was just too fast. Gurpreet will say, "Open oManager and go to the Create Event. Scroll down here and then add this." And it is annoying to have to pause the video, try to follow the instructions, then back the video up 10 seconds to watch everything again in order try to follow the instructions. It was not uncommon for me to watch his steps multiple times just to make sure I was in the right place. Another thing is with this speech. Gurpreet speaks English incredibly well. I taught ESL for a number of years, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for polyglots. However, it is clear that English is not Gurpreet's native language. At times, it is extremely difficult to understand what he is saying simply because he speaks so quickly and, at times, unclearly. When you are having trouble getting some code to work, it becomes much more frustrating when you can't catch what is being said. Again, it is like Gurpreet is trying to get through his lectures quickly, so he is speaking extra fast. In a number of lectures, the content was just too complicated for me and I felt like I was just copying the code Gurpreet had laid out. This still has its benefits, as I was able to sort of analyze the code and learn about different functions, but I didn't feel like I learned a whole lot with some of the later lectures. Something else I would like to see done in future courses is the inclusion of a download of the export of the game up to that point in the courseI got stuck a couple of times and could not figure out what the problem was. If the code from the lecture I had just watched were available to download, it would be easier to compare or solve the issue I was having (I could simply copy and paste the event and move on to the next lecture instead of looking around for a couple of hours only to find I had typed ). Debugging code is a great thing to practice, to be sure, but spending a couple of hours debugging (especially to no avail) can derail one's motivation to learn. A solid 3 stars. I will definitely come back to certain lectures when implementing certain ideas into my games. Maybe, as I improve, the lectures will make more sense to me.

Edited. Again, pretty good course, but this one was really kinda too fast. I'd be okay with triple time, but longer and more detailed explanations. Like ok, I hear what the function is used for but I can't imagine it in 2 secs and we are already doing next function. It'd be great if it was explained graphically. But still, nice course, helped a lot and for sure will be coming back if I'll be stuck.!

From what I have seen in the course so far, the course content has been extremely useful and it was delivered in an efficient manner. Navigating the different lectures is very convenient. Each lecture I have watched has contained relevant and well-laid-out information. Matharoo uses time in each lecture to explain things thoroughly, and doesn't waste time rambling. This course has been an instrumental investment! Thank you, Matharoo!

It is helping me very much with my game design thesis study. I am learning the basic functions and as well how to insert code and sprite animation. Found it very useful Money worth spent, really enjoyed the whole process learning code and I never felt lost in the tutorial because there is a lot of visual explanations and for every action there is commentary why it was done and its purpose. Thank you!.

This is a great course for learning the basics of a 2d rpg and gamemaker 2.0. The course is at the right level for beginners and those with a little experience will enjoy the course as well. The lectures are short and to the point and teach you what you need to know to get started creating games. The instructor added two more lessons after I had completed the course, and they were really nice added bonus. Great to see the instructor caring about his students and continue to improve and expand the course. I look forward to more courses from this instructor.

Really quick and straight to the point course, I'm new in Game Maker and after 6 months trying tutorials on Youtube, I realized that this is the kind of teaching u need in order to fully understand how GML works. I had some mistakes and the instructor reply on my questions every time in a short period of time, he really takes time from himself to make sure everyone understand his corses, HIGHLY RECOMMENDABLE! Thanks Gurpreet Singh Matharoo! I'll get ur next ones!!

I highly recommend this course to anyone with some previous code and/or game making knowledge to get up to speed on how things work in game maker and learning GML basics. Videos are short but well put together and explained without needing to watch the presenter attempt to type and talk at the same time and video effects to help follow each line of code being discussed. I will definitely be watching out for more videos from Gurpreet because I learn well with this style. Excellent work!

I really enjoyed this course. At first the accent was a bit hard to understand, but after a few lectures I completely forgot about it. The lectures are short but really effective. With the 2-4 minute lectures I understood more than in 20 minute tutorials on YouTube. He first explains how we are going to do something before moving on to the coding. theres no time wasted on typing out the code, he already has it ready and pastes it in and then explains what it does. The code is simple and effective. The resources are there so you don't need to draw or animate anything and you can just focus on learning GML and how Game Maker Studio 2 works. If I have a problem with my game or simply just a question, I can ask the Instructor in discord and he responds pretty quick and it makes the learning experience so much better. Really cool guy :) I do have a little bit of experience programming so these short lectures were really perfect, cause I didn't have that much trouble understanding the code. I'm not sure how the experience would be for someone totally new to writing code.
