Mastering REST APIs with FastAPI (Udemy.com)

Build professional APIs using FastAPI, including 100% test coverage, background tasks, user authentication, and more!

Created by: Jose Salvatierra

Last updated December 2024

Our take

Based on the ratings of 345 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.

Jose Salvatierra's course walks through one build: a social media API with registration, JWT login, posts, comments and likes. Along the way it adds pytest tests for all the code, logging, an async database, background tasks for email and image work, file uploads, and a Render deployment with Sentry and GitHub Actions. It runs 13.6 hours over 121 lectures. Nearly five of those hours are an optional Python refresher, so the FastAPI itself is closer to nine. It is aimed at people who already program in some language.

Most of the 345 ratings are positive, with 213 five-star and 88 four-star. Reviewers like the teaching style, calling it simple but applicable, and one praised how updated code is overlaid on the video. One reviewer says it teaches good Python habits as well as FastAPI. The complaints are consistent. He talks and types fast, some lectures are hard to follow without earlier FastAPI contact, and a few want simpler code first instead of production-style structure and extra packages. One reviewer disliked the database library, saying it runs plain SQL instead of an ORM. Another hit deprecated code.

One reviewer calls it the best FastAPI course on Udemy, and the syllabus gives testing, logging and deployment their own sections. The last update was December 2024, so expect some older library choices. A sensible way to use it is to keep the official FastAPI tutorial open beside it and slow the video to 0.75 speed if needed, as reviewers suggest. Experienced programmers get a lot from it. Beginners should start elsewhere.

Best forDevelopers who already code and want one full FastAPI project with testing, logging and deployment.
Skip it ifYou are new to programming or need slow, step-by-step explanations of every concept.

Pros

  • One full project covers JWT auth, email, uploads, tests, logging and deployment
  • Optional 38-lecture Python refresher, which one reviewer called excellent
  • Reviewers say the teaching is simple but applicable, with updated code overlaid on screen
  • Pytest with 100% coverage, plus Sentry and GitHub Actions for real-world workflow

Cons

  • Fast pace; several reviewers needed 0.75 speed or an LLM to keep up
  • Heavy boilerplate and extra packages early, with little ground-up explanation
  • Last updated December 2024, and some reviewers hit deprecated code
Amazing content, step by step instructions with hands-on project that consolidates understanding.
Elie Kawerk, a student

Intermediate fits: it needs some programming in any language, and beginners are told to learn Python first.

Course Description

With FastAPI you can build complete, high-performance APIs in days, and adding new features is blazing-fast. That's why FastAPI has become so popular in recent years.

In this course, I'll show you how to go from a blank slate to a complete, finished FastAPI application.

The project

We'll build social media API with user authentication, email sending, and file upload. Users will be able to register and log in using Bearer (JWT) tokens. They will be able to create posts, leave comments, and like existing posts.

We'll use Pydantic for data validation and encode/databases as our database connectivity library.

Advanced knowledge

Use background tasks in FastAPI to improve performance when running slow code, such as when sending emails (covered in the course) or when making slow requests to third party APIs (also covered).

Throughout the course we use an async database library, again to maximise performance, which is nonetheless straightforward to use. You'll learn about the different types of data relationships and how to model them, including many-to-many relationships.

You'll learn how to handle file uploads and what to do with the uploaded files, so you don't run out of server space.

Complete API testing

Finally, 100% of the code in this course has tests. You'll use pytest extensively to write integration and unit tests for the API. You'll learn about pytest fixtures, parametrization, and testing conventions.

Part of real-world development means logging! There's a lot of logging knowledge in this course, including how to set up the logging module properly, when to make logging calls, and where to store logs when your application is deployed.

Deployments

Of course, I'll show you how to deploy your FastAPI app using popular service Render.  You can deploy your FastAPI app for free, but I'll also show you some paid options for improved performance.

We'll also look at application management, error handling with Sentry, and CI/CD with GitHub Actions.

If you use or want to use FastAPI, this course contains everything you need to develop complete, real-world APIs.

Let's get started. I'll see you on the inside!

Jose Salvatierra

Hi, I'm Jose! I love helping students learn to code and master software development. I've been teaching online for over 10 years, and I founded Teclado to bring software development to everyone—my objective is for you to truly understand everything that goes on behind the scenes.

Coding is extremely rewarding. As you learn, things start to click and make sense. You can join the dots of all the things that weren't quite clear before. I'm here to make that journey quick and painless!

I can help you with Python and JavaScript issues, particularly in web and backend development. I'm experienced with programming libraries and frameworks like Flask, Django, FastAPI, React, React Native, and AngularJS. I've worked extensively with UNIX systems, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and advanced system architecture design.

The course is great in introducing FastAPI concepts. It starts with the basics, from Python to making your first request. I only felt that in the end it should spend more time explaining topics.. it goes very fast in some lectures and if you didn't have contact with FastAPI before it is kinda difficult.

By Iryna Hry on 2/17/2025

This is my third course from Jose. He is a great teacher! The course is very informative and covers what you need to know about FastAPI, main topics such as testing, authentification, sending emails and, how to work with SQL database, how to deploy FastAPI apps to the cloud. He mentioned that this is NOT FOR BEGINNERS course. You need to have experience in programming to follow the explanation. If he speaks too fast for your taste, just use 0.75 speed. Working as a software developer, you will have to search for information by yourself, so don't expect that the teacher will cover every letter. Just some students left bad reviews, and I completely disagree with them.

This course does not cover pytest. It shows only a very fuzzy and confusing base that the teacher probably put together in an hour or so. This course does not cover async databases, as it does not handle ORM. It's some dirty workaround that simply executes SQL queries. Not something you want to use in 2024. The rest I did not even look at, as it's probably just as bad as the rest. Currently requesting a refund. P.S. Raised my review from 1 star to 3 because of the excellent python refresher.

It is a great course, but there is a small issue: A bit of history, previously I learned on another course about Flask RestAPI from Jose and it is good but some important topics, such as logging and testing aren't discussed The cool thing is that here those topics were introduced well(but as for testing it demands you to learn by yourself to get fully comfortable) Moreover Jose showed testing of 3-D third-party endpoints and you possibly apply the same way on the other popular storages like S3 or MiniO instead of Backblaze Despite that many topics that are crucial in API development like PUT and DELETE weren't covered. I mean: I would figure out how to do it myself, but it would be much great if it were covered, and saved a lot of time reading sqlalchemy doc But on the other we have a shortly described topics about monitoring and logging(not python logging) but to 3-d third-party tools My whole idea is it would be much greater if the course were split in 2, but cover more on each topic Anyway, it's worth watching

Well structured course. To be used as an immersion course that shows you the path, but wont explain to you 100% of whys and hows. I'd recommand following this course after following the FastAPI official tutorial, and other official docs or realpython article (pytest, async). It's a matter trade-of (overview versus full complete). Good course to dive into FastAPI.

By K Ebara on 1/9/2024

I've already known and used FastAPI in production before watching this course, by reading through great FastAPI official docs. I thought there was little need to refer to other resources. Indeed you can write basic CRUD, testings, and database connection codes with only reading official docs, if you are some experience in Flask or other web frameworks. However, this course dives even deeper into FastAPI practices in Section5 and later, and now I highly recommend to take this course also for non-beginners. Code quality is also good and latest library versions are well supported (in 2024.1).

I have completed 3 chapters now and while the instructor himself is excellent and this is a brilliant course for experienced developers who want to ramp up in fastapi which I do for work. However, minus 1 star as the instructor moves sooo fast especially if you want to code a long. He talks and types as fast as anyone I have seen which makes it harder to follow and code along. Other than that though absolutely amazing content, thanks !

By Sebastian Ignacio Toro Severino on 11/7/2023

The course is very descriptive, not only about the main topics that you would expect about FastAPI, but also about how to use third party APIs, configure loggers, sending emails, etc. It is algo well structured, so it is easy to follow.

By Robert Young on 10/27/2023

This is one of the best Udemy courses I have taken. Very clear and well-organized. The example API is simple, but the implementation is fairly sophisticated, with multiple environments (dev, test, prod), logging, testing, authentication, email confirmation, background tasks, and deployment. Highly recommended for anybody wanting to learn FastAPI.

By Philip Genev on 10/16/2023

This is the 3rd course from Jose that I'm attending. I would say that as the previous ones, it is very well structured and Jose provides the required amount of info for each concept that is covered during the course. Good job and keep going!
