Course Description

Master an accurate React mental model in record time! Don't just copy code. Understand React.

Most React tutorials teach you to type along like a robot. You end up with working code but no real understanding of why it works. When bugs appear, or your faced with challenges you didn't see in the projects you imitated, you're stuck.

This course is different. Build an accurate mental model of React's core concepts so you can debug faster, make better architectural decisions, write clean maintainable code, and direct an LLM properly to generate React code.

What You'll Learn

Components & JSX

  • What components really are and why they must be "pure"

  • How JSX works under the hood and why its rules exist

  • What props are and how they work

  • Writing semantic, maintainable component markup

Reconciliation and the Fiber Tree

  • How React works under-the-hood

  • Where React actually stores information

Hooks

  • useState: Why immutability matters and how React detects changes

  • useReducer: When to choose reducers over simple state

Modern Data Fetching

  • Master React 19's new use hook for clean async code

  • Understand Suspense boundaries

AI and LLM Prompting

  • Use your knowledge to properly prompt an AI

  • Get the best results from an LLM generating React apps

I've read all of React's source code, and have given popular talks at React Summit (the world's biggest React conference). Join me in understanding React!

Prerequisites

  • Basic JavaScript (functions, objects, arrays)

  • HTML and CSS familiarity

  • No prior React experience required

Anthony Alicea

Born and raised in Cleveland Ohio, now married and living in upstate New York, Tony is primarily focused these days on trying to be a good husband. While inexperienced at that, he's quite experienced in all things web.

Tony has been programming since he was 12 years old, and got into web sites and web application development at 16. After graduating with a Computer Science degree from Case Western Reserve University, Tony continued with that interest as a software application developer and architect, database designer, and user interface designer.

His 25 years of experience has ranged across technologies such as modern semantic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Angular, Vue, Node.js, SQL as well as user experience design, usability testing and more.

He believes strongly that deeply understanding any topic allows you to properly learn it and, even more importantly in a real-world environment, quickly overcome problems.

He also has a deep interest in human nature and behavior, and how that impacts human-computer interaction. This interest translated into extending his career into user experience design and usability research.

Another link in the chain is his 25 years of experience in public speaking and teaching, both in front of large groups and as a one-on-one private instructor.

The “let me give you the mental model” approach, or the idea of “thinking about React in terms of what is actually running in the browser,” was very, very helpful. I think everything was explained really well in a very short amount of time. The only thing I might change is the course image (I know, it sounds silly), because I don't think it is consistent with the excellent course it represents. But we're here to learn, not for the clickbait!

This is great introductory course for learning React. Tony does an excellent job explaining foundational terms for the technology he teaches. He explains the code accurately and thoroughly. The assignments also reinforce the learning.

I found this course to be exactly at the level I was looking for. I wanted to understand React from a conceptual or architectural point of view without having to go through the process of developing a full fledged project. This course provided exactly that. I wish there were more courses like this. In the age of generative AI, this is the kind of knowledge you are looking for.

This is small course, but omg how well it is structured, the ground information about the inner working of React. I used React in the past, but was never really taught the inner workings, it just worked. Thanks for this great insight.

Good, pretty short course. The start felt a bit too basic, but after the introduction, it got into the good stuff and the inner workings of React, which was what I was most excited to learn. Some of the exercises felt a bit primitive, but the later ones actually checked if you had been paying attention. Overall good course. A good start to learn the inner workings of React, although it definitely just scratches the surface of how React works.

This course was an excellent learning experience and exceeded my expectations. The concepts were explained in a very clear and structured manner, making it easy to understand even complex topics within a short time. The hands-on approach, along with practical examples, helped me strengthen my understanding of React fundamentals and build confidence in applying them. I also appreciated the inclusion of modern topics like AI and LLMs, which added extra value to the course. Overall, this course was a great match for me and has provided a strong foundation to work on real-world React applications.

It was a long time since the last time I touched some React code and taking this course gave me the chance to resume it in an actualized manner. It was also great to have an explanation about how React works behind the scenes!

By Peter Hudson on 4/8/2026

The course started at a hell of a pace regarding installing vite etc. However, you don't need it for the course. All examples are worked through the browser anyway. If you want a supercharged intro to REACT then this works. Tony challenges you to understand and that's a good thing.

By Nathan Lucero on 2/25/2026

This course was great! It provided some great knowledge about how react works and how to begin using it. One thing I was hoping that the course would cover is the execution contexts and lexical environments of the code that we write and how it interacts with the React code once it has been transpiled. However, it was shown that we can look at the transpiled code using the browser developer tools and babeljs.io, so I can probably figure it out from there. This is the third course that I have finished by Anthony Alicea. I very much prefer his style of teaching and highly recommend his other courses, if you want to actually learn about the topics of the class.

By Francisco Davila Mendez on 12/29/2025

There was one moment I didn’t like when he explained the useReducer hook. He only showed the core method at the end, instead of right from the start, which made the code impossible to understand if you stopped at the beginning to read through and try to make sense of it. Also, the built-in feature we had to code in between was very cool, but I would have enjoyed it more if there had been some example results to look at.
