Course Description

Welcome to Serverless Functions Course.

I guess let’s start by answering the most pressing question first. What is a serverless function and why should we care? So, here is the deal. There are times when our app needs a dynamic feature and even after that 20th google search, we inevitably come to realization that the only way do it, is by building and hosting our own server. A good example would be setting up a stripe payment flow. There is a better solution though.

Serverless Functions.

Ok, but what is a serverless function? Well, despite the name, serverless function actually does not mean that there is no server. What it simply means, is that someone else is responsible for maintaining it . We, as front-end developers only need to setup our desired functionality, and the cloud provider will take care of the rest. What also really cool, we can continue to use our favorite programming language – Javascript. Most cloud providers offer some solution of serverless functions but for this course we will hosting company by the name of Netlify. We will use Netlify because they offer generous free tier and make it very easy,  to get up and running with serverless functions.

Here are the serverless functions examples/setups were are going to cover during the course.

- Basic “Hello World”

- Basic API (with local data)

- Complex API (with Airtable)

- Survey

- Open Weather API

- Newsletter

- Send Email / Submit Form

- Stripe Payment

John has a number of tuts on Udemy, but I think this one is his best. Using Airtable for small projects is great. No messing with NodeJs backends, MERN, PostgreSQL, etc., is nice when you're only dealing with a handful of records.

A course that horns in the simple concepts of a simple technology, namely, Netlify serverless for the frontend How did the course achieve this ? Ans: Through many straightforward examples. Also the author speaks like a hip-hop artist and makes the course entertaining

This course is amazing and worth your time and money ;). John is one of the bests instructors here in udemy. He explains very well and teaches you all that you need. I learned a lot about serverless functions with netlify. You will NOT regret taking this course so just buy it :D. See you on your other course :)

A good course to introduce you to the world of serverless functions. The only thing you have to keep an eye on is the versions of the libraries that he uses to consider a code refactoring and also the conditions of the plans that offer different services when using their APIs. Some subscriptions change their terms over time, but to understand serverless functionality this is an excellent course with great examples

The explainations provided by John Smilga is absolutely crystal clear which makes the advanced concept grasping, simply effortless. Same goes for the React Projects by John Smilga as well. Absolutely great course. One of the best and really skilled instructors out here in the tech world.

Excellent course, a very useful topic explained so well that was very easy to understand. Also there are many different projects to practice what we have learned. There is no reason why your should not to take this course

I needed a safe way to handle my API keys in front-end projects, and I got what I was looking for. I was slightly disappointed because course used a fake smtp service for the email example, but as far as the serverless functionality goes, everything was good, and easy to understand.

I signed up for this course to have a little further insight to what 'serverless functions' are, what the fuss is all about, why I should even care and how I can use these to make my life easier and of course, enabling me to pass myself off as being someone up to date with all of the latest and greatest tech in the dev world. It so turns out that the fuss was not unsubstantiated. There is indeed good reason to use this and John, the instructor, puts forward good, well formatted examples on why and how. That's all I was looking for. Job done, boxes ticked. Thank you.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course. It is one of my favourite courses that I have taken on Udemy. The length was perfect. I think John is a really good instructor. The course content and subject matter matched me perfectly. I have my own JAMstack site using Netlify, Vue, and Nuxt already, so the tech stack was a perfect match for me. For a while now, I have wanted to learn more up setting up my own APIs without writing a whole bunch of code, and this is exactly what this course covers. I'm excited to see what I can build with this new found knowledge. I definitely got a tonne of value from taking this course.
