The Complete Swift iOS Developer - Create Real Apps in Swift (Udemy.com)

Learn iOS and Swift to become an app entrepreneur. Includes FREE AWS service, Swift tvOS and Sketch training.

Created by: Grant Klimaytys

Last updated November 2020

Our take

Based on the ratings of 3,440 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2020. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free, 49 hour course that walks beginners through eleven small iOS apps, from a screen torch and a calculator up to a WhatsApp clone on Firebase and a weather app pulling JSON from a REST API. It was built around Xcode 8, Swift 3 and iOS 10, and the last update the syllabus shows is November 2020. So this is best read as a free way to see whether app building appeals to you before paying for something current, not as a path to shipping in today's Xcode.

Reviewers like Grant Klimaytys as a teacher. He pauses to ask questions mid video, keeps steps small, and one complete beginner says he went from no Swift at all to writing his own apps. The rating is 4.5 across 3,440 reviews, with roughly 60 percent giving five stars. The complaints are consistent, though. The Swift basics section is only about an hour, and low-star reviews say the middle of the course moves too fast for true novices, who end up copying code without understanding it. The calculator app in particular gets called under explained. And the Xcode on screen no longer matches what learners have installed.

Length is padded. About 16 hours of the 49 are a general startup advice section, and there is a 4.5 hour archived RSS reader written in Swift 2. One reviewer called the last third a rehash of other courses. The actual app building runs closer to 20 hours. Since it costs nothing, the only cost is time. Beginners who want something current should look at the iOS & Swift bootcamp listed beside it and keep this one as a free supplement.

Best forComplete beginners who want a free, project based taste of iOS before paying for a current course.
Skip it ifYou want to ship in today's Xcode and SwiftUI, or need Swift basics taught slowly and in depth.

Pros

  • Free, with 245 lectures and eleven small apps including GPS maps, Firebase chat, Siri speech and a REST weather app.
  • Grant asks questions mid video and keeps steps small, and beginners say it kept them focused.
  • 4.5 stars from 3,440 reviews, with about 60 percent five star ratings.
  • Extras cover Sketch 3 app design, a tvOS streaming radio app and releasing apps to the store.

Cons

  • Built on Xcode 8, Swift 3 and iOS 10, last updated November 2020, so screens and code no longer match.
  • Swift basics get about an hour, and low-star reviews say novices end up copying code they do not understand.
  • Roughly 16 of the 49 hours are general startup advice, plus a 4.5 hour archived Swift 2 app.
It's outdated now but at time it was made it's great course. Grant is very good at explaining everything

Marked all levels, but it is aimed squarely at first-time iOS coders with a Mac; experienced iOS developers are told to skip it.

Course Description

The Complete iOS 10 Developer has just ONE goal - to turn you into the best developer, freelancer and entrepreneur that you can possibly be!

Other iOS courses COMPLETELY miss why you're learning to become a developer. How do I know this? Well I've taken their courses because I wanted to see what the competition is up to!

And what do these other guys miss?

Well they haven't thought about you and what your needs are! Let me tell you why I think you're here. I think it's because maybe you are looking for a way to improve yourself - either via high paying jobs, freelancing or by creating your very own successful startup.

I get that.

So whilst this course gives you all the developer skills you could ever want - it also has more. A complete section on how you create a startup. Right from idea all the way through to raising millions in venture capital funding.

--------------------------------------------------------

Which one are you?

- Six figure salaried developer?

- Someone who likes earning between $60 - $120 p/h as a freelancer?

- Someone who wants to free themselves from the 9 - 5 jive and create a successful startup?

--------------------------------------------------------

Here's a recent message I received from one of my students:

" Hi Grant, I managed to land the fabled 6 figure developer job yesterday thanks to your course. In the interview they asked me complicated questions and luckily you'd explained the majority of those. Thanks for a great course and I'm off to buy the rest of your courses now that I have a little extra change :) "

--------------------------------------------------------

Bonus For You

Many courses offer a few extras here and there. That's nice but they don't have any real value. By real value I mean, can it earn you passive revenue day after day, week after week or month after month?

This course contains an app that no other course contains. One that I'm releasing in time for iOS 10 and one that I foresee as having HUGE potential. The source code is contained in this course. In fact I invite you to compete against me with the release. If your app has more users than mine I will refund you the price of this course :)

------------------------------------------------------

Who Am I?

Everyone wants to know who's teaching them. Well, here's my bio:

I started out as NOT A PROGRAMMER. Hard to believe when I tell you that I've worked on dozens of the most popular apps out there right?

The fact that I didn't start out as a programmer means that I actually remember what it's like to be a beginner. I remember teachers throwing useless jargon at me and you know what?

It sucked!

That's why in this course I tell you everything you need to know in plain English!

  • Creating useful apps
  • Making GPS maps
  • Making ticking clock apps
  • Transcription apps
  • Calculator apps
  • Converter apps
  • RESTful and JSON apps
  • Firebase apps
  • Instagram clones (but better ;)
  • Fancy animations to WOW users
  • Creating compelling apps
  • How to start your own startup from idea to financing to selling

And a ton more!

In Silicon valley venture capitalists talk about return on investment a lot. A good return averaged over all their assets is something like 10%.

Imagine if you could have a return in the thousands of percent?

Well that's what you get when you take this course. An investment of a few coffees returns your investment multiple times over.

You are your biggest asset. Invest in it accordingly and take this course today!

The iOS development course is really good and easy to follow. The instructor explains things clearly and asks questions in the middle of the video, which helps me stay focused and understand the concepts better. I’ve just completed the installation step, and now I’m moving on to learning the basics of Swift 3. So far, the learning experience has been smooth and motivating, and I’m excited to continue.

By Krisztian Cserge on 12/17/2018

Absolutely great for beginners. As I started this course I had no idea of swift, no knowledge of the basic Syntaxes. Thanks to this course, now I am able to code applications in Swift for iOS. I definitely recommend to complete this course. 49 hours aren't even as long as it seems. The time flies if you enjoy what you are doing. Really great course: Content 10/10 Explanations 10/10 Engagement and Entertainment 10/10 +1 bonus point :D Sounds were great and understandable Quick explanations Right on point

I got this for £10, and I have learnt so much. I had barely any experience, but I made apps that worked with databases. Although he was fast at times when he was explaining, compared to other instructors, it was fine. I also loved the sound quality because it was obvious he had an actual mic. That really helped make the audio clear. I would have liked more engagement, and maybe to see his personality more, but still, that was not a deal breaker, and I still learnt in an engaging way. My review stays 5 stars.

When I bought this course, almost as soon as he appeared, I was very pleased with the course and I really liked, but my attitude has changed over time. I was finished the third part of the course, and then returned to this course only a few months to continue and complete it. And what do I see? No application is not working properly, make sure there are plenty of bugs in the code because of the fact that the different versions of both the language (swift) and xcode works as a lecturer, and I am. Then, my questions for more than a month without a reply. Just do not like the fact that the transition from the very simple to the complex things going on the moment, that is, you do not quite yet understand what is happening, as lecturer writes pretty serious code and you do not know what's going on (as an example ARCHIVE section - A Fully Published RSS Reader App Written in Swift 2, where a lesson on the use of the SQLite, absolutely nothing is clear that and as there is simply repeating the text, not to mention the fact that the language version (not swift 3) is not that, then what do this module ??? code does not work) well, the last straw was the fact that the last section is simply cut off half it just infuriated me how it is possible to complete the course? I wanted to put the first 3, but threw half stars for sympathy for the teacher and his style. P.S. I think it is not necessary to run before all and produce, at an early beta version of a language and the most xcode, course. Not working code is very angry.

By Kam Hei Siu on 10/28/2016

In my opinions, this course is not for iOS beginners or programming beginners even though the instructor said so. Beginners will find it difficult to follow along at the middle of the course because the instructor just covered the basics a little bit. Also, the videos are based on Xcode 8 beta version so you need to change the code a little bit to run in Xcode 8. However, if you have little iOS development background, you will benefit quite a lot from the course.

By Bryan Lamb on 8/16/2016

I have very high hopes. Since I've dabbled in other (unimpressive) iOS 10 courses already and have some background... I skipped straight into the "Where Am I" module. After watching only a few videos... this instructor seems to have a teaching style & video quality that surpasses the other courses I've been viewing so far. I'm cautiously optimistic that this might be the best iOS 10 course ever. Anxious to see more. Will update.

By Jamie Uttariello on 8/2/2016

Got a refund for a different, more popular, iOS 10 course and took this one instead. Couldn't recommend highly enough this particular course. Grant walks you through each concept at a perfect speed and teaches skills in a progressive manner so by the middle of the course you start to feel confident and look forward to the next concept. So excited to work through the rest of the course!

By Austin Patry on 7/14/2016

As someone with absolutely no prior coding/programming knowledge, I took a shot in the dark and took this course. I got pretty confused in some of the beginning lectures, but after making a few apps and seeing the app functionality with the code, I began to have a better understanding of the previously confusing topics. My advice is to rally through and don't get discouraged if you don't understand something because it only takes one day to click, and when it clicks, it's in your permanent memory bank.

By Stam Hill on 7/11/2016

This is the best course for Swift & IOS 10 because the instructor explains what he is doing in a very succinct and understandable way. There may be a few things you have to go over several times before you get it ... but that's true of learning in general ... some things just take time to sink in. This is an excellent course.

By Shelley McKechnie Cryan on 7/4/2016

Course is advertised for beginners but much of it is geared towards people who have programming experience. That is, instructor walks through basics in some lessons, but then glides through new complex topics in other sections as if you're expected to know them already. Moves way too fast for beginners, even those who are technically adept. So a beginner would need a different course to get up and running. However, people with more coding experience -- in Swift or a different language -- would get value, as audio and video quality is excellent and instructor does a good job of building a knowledge base of useful constructs. And even for beginners, the course is a decent taste of what is possible.
