What you will learn

  • Read Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) to identify the materials, settings, and instructions needed for a production weld.
  • Interpret Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) to connect welding parameters and test results to the WPS they support.
  • Classify essential, nonessential, and supplementary essential variables to decide when a WPS revision or requalification is needed.
  • Compare AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, and API 1104 scopes to identify the welding requirements relevant to a project.
  • Distinguish codes, standards, specifications, and mandatory wording to interpret welding requirements and document priorities.
  • Draft a preliminary WPS using the supplied example to give welders clear instructions for a procedure qualification test coupon.
  • Plan PQR development, required tests, and supporting records to document the qualification of a welding procedure.

Course Description

In this course Understanding Welding Codes and Procedures, you will learn from an industry expert an overview of the Codes, Standards, and Specifications that govern the welding industry.

Industry organizations such as the American Welding Society (AWS), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the American Petroleum Institute (API) publish a wide range of standards covering everything from simple carbon steel structural applications to nuclear power plant construction. Understanding how to read and interpret these standards, and how to integrate their requirements into your organization's training documents and work instructions is key to a successful career in welding.

Some of the topics you will learn in this course include:

  • The major industry trade groups and the standards they issue

  • The key sections found in most standards including general info, joint design, base material, filler material, positions, electrical characteristics, and more

  • Best practices in writing Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) to align with the major codes

  • The key sections of the WPS including

  • Essential, Non-essential, and Supplementary Essential Variables

  • An overview of welding inspection including test coupons, tensile testing, bend testing, impact testing, non-destructive testing and visual inspection

  • Welder Performance Qualification documentation and testing

When you enroll in this course, you also get instant access to 14 downloadable resources that allow you to continue your learning and implement some of the procedures you're learning. Downloadable resources with this course include:

  • PQR Example

  • WPS Example

  • Non-Essential Variables, Study Guide

  • Toughness Testing Impact Behavior Study Guide

  • Pre-WPS (PWPS) - What Is It and Why Does It Exist

  • pWPS Example + Instructions

  • Welding Procedure Specification Development

  • Welder Performance Qualification Procedure

  • Qualifying Welders – Real World Talk

So far, it's been great. I will admit that this being the third group of classes that I'm taking with them, many of the stories are blending together. Notwithstanding, maybe hearing them multiple times will help with retention on the information. I'm not upset. Have a good one, everyone!

By Richard Bassett on 12/5/2025

Has introduced me to welding codes but does not go into enough detail for me to alter my weld procedure. Not something I usually need to know but do have all the relevant information in my Science and Practice of Welding bible by AC Davis.

By Carlos Tinelli on 9/4/2025

Esta barbaro. Informacion precisa y resumida de todos y cada uno de los aspectos que son importantes para la soldadura.

By Marcus DeRamus on 8/29/2024

I'm a numbers and "according to the book" kind of guy so this course will aid my welding experience into a fruitful one.

By Adam Millhouse on 6/30/2024

I believe the information is being covered very thoroughly. I'm here taking nots and learning pertinent information as I work toward a CWI.

The course is extremely clear in demonstration and defining the concept of code, standards, and specification

By Chris Salvesen on 9/14/2023

Good overview to help me get familiarized with the subject. Seemed a bit heavy on ASME details and less so for AWS, which is what I'm working with, but overall was still very useful info.
