Course Description
Welding symbols are the graphical tools, placed on engineering drawings and specifications, that product engineers and designers use to communicate the intent of their design to the people who are making and inspecting the products. Details like the type, shape, length, thickness, and location of the weld are all communicated through these welding symbols.
And like all symbols, without an understanding of how they work, they're meaningless. But in this course, "Understanding Welding Symbols", we show you how to read and interpret these symbols.
Metallurgist and Licensed Professional Engineer, Garry Pace is the instructor for this course. Over the past 20+ years, Garry has taught thousands of welders, weld inspectors, quality engineers, quality technicians, and other manufacturing professionals the fundamentals of welding, along with its procedures and specifications.
In this course, you will learn:
An overview of the major welding processes like GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, SAW and FCAW
All the major weld joint types
Welding symbols ... what they mean and why they're important
All the terminology and concepts needed to master welding symbols
How groove and fillet welds are specified and dimensioned
How plug, slot, and stud welds are specified and dimensioned
Supplementary information and symbols
An overview of nondestructive testing methods like ultrasonic, liquid penetrant, x-ray, and magnetic particle inspection
How required NDT methods are specified on blueprints
Overviews on weld pass types, weld penetration, joint and edge preparation, and pre- and post-heat treating.

I went to welding school (didn't finish it, but I hope to return.) This is a portion of what I didn't get a chance to learn in school. Yes, it might be better to learn in school, but at least I am learning and earning. I look forward to learning more from these presentations.

Currently in a trade school for welding and building my knowledge before hopping out into the field. I will say I took this course just to compare it to the course I went through in school. The only difference is that in our school, of course, we were able to go out into the shop and weld out what was shown in the symbol. That's the only difference; everything in this course is exactly what we learned in the short classroom portion we would sit in each day. Good work, and if I wanted to learn welding symbols and such without going to school, this is definitely the go-to.

This video was very informative. I was able to follow with the visual aids and tools to assist you with sort of a hands on, in the field type of feel as if you were ready for a practical test for certification. I am an electrical and I feel that I have enough knowledge to start "OJT".

There's definitely some good information here, but the structure and editing was odd. It wasn't organized in a coherent fashion, with sections often including slides about things that didn't really fall under that heading, and there was minimal effort put towards verbally connecting everything. There were also numerous times where the exact same point would be addressed in two different places, which makes me think this was edited together from different lectures and with many slides being copied from elsewhere. Also, coming to this course as a design engineer, I wish there was more discussion on how to select which welding symbol to use and why each is used.

As an estimator in training, this helped me put some things together that hadn't clicked or been explained to me on the job. I highly recommend it for anyone working for or with drawings that contain weldments. Thank you!

This course provided me with the course content and information that I was expecting and it was generally well delivered, however the main area that could be improved is that there was a lot of duplication of content within the sections, with some things covered 3 or 4 times. This is good for learning that content, but made the course a lot longer than it needed to be and it sometime jumped around a bit between subjects within 1 section. In general though a good course and worth doing if you want to improve your knowledge of weld symbols.

Ray, YOU'RE THE BEST!! You're answering all of my questions and calmed my fears about welding. Knowing the language of welding along with dimensions will get me everywhere in the world of welding. I promise you that my first welding job will be due to what I will learn right here under your tutelage. Great job, Ray!

Very comprehensive but digestable for a beginner - the repetition of key concepts throughout helped drill them down properly.

Very good and detailed structure for understanding the welding symbols and arc welding methods. I have 2 feedbacks about the course. First one, it will be useful to have a quize about symbols sections and secondly during the GMAW course, it is mentioned as MIG regardless of the gas type but if there is a mixture gasses of active gas and inert gas such as Argon and Co2, it is called MAG: Metal Active Gas Welding.

The instructor is very knowledgeable. The content is good and is great for future reference. There is a small mistake in one of the slides: Pg 3 section 10 is shown in error (the instructor instructs correctly but the visual does not agree with the instructor), It also does not agree with the correct slid in 4-6 section 9. Removing Pg 3 would be a simple fix and would help avoid some confusion. (I am bringing this up as a small thing) having said that, I would encourage anyone to take this class. You will probably learn some new things and/or be reminded of some old things. :)
