Course Description

As a complete beginner, learning game development can be hard. My goal is that this course will make the process as fun and easy as possible!

In just 6 hours, I'll teach you how to create an entire game without any prior game development experience. Throughout every video, I thoroughly explain the necessary systems we're using in a clear and comprehensive way, so that by the end of this course, you'll not only have completed a game, but you'll also have a foundational knowledge of Unreal Engine that you can use to start making games on your own.

(Course owners will also get a free download for the project files I created for this series, that can be used for anything you like!)

Here’s everything that this course will cover.

The Basics:

I’ll teach you how to install UE5, make new projects, and edit levels with custom imported objects.

Programing a Professional Player Character:

We’ll add sprinting, customize our characters movement settings specifically to fit our game, then implement realistic, 3D sound effects and camera shake to enhance the games feel.

Reusable Blueprints:

Throughout the course I’ll show you how to create multiple Blueprints that you can reuse in all your levels, and easily set custom parameters for the important variables in them. We’ll be able to drag and drop these Blueprints to create full scale levels in just minutes. We’ll make things like subtitles, dangerous spikes, moving platforms, and pressure plates to activate them.

We’ll also create a dynamic item collection system, where the collectables are used to open the exit for each level. You’ll learn how to make systems that dynamically react to how many collectables are in your scene.

Level Design and Creation:

We’ll also take some time to go over a few basic level design principles, and draw out designs for each of our levels. After designing our levels, we’ll drag and drop our reusable Blueprints to construct every one super quickly and efficiently.

I’ll even teach some basic lighting and post processing systems that you can use to bring life to even the simplest scenes.

Programing Menus using Widgets:

After creating our levels, you’ll learn all about creating different kinds of menu, like a main menu where you can select levels you want to play, a pause screen that stops the game and allows users to return to the main menu, as well as a death screen and end screen.

Polishing and Improvements:

Once we’ve essentially finished our game, we’ll go back into our Blueprints, and make some tuning adjustments, bug fixes, and add extra sounds.

Become a video game developer today, you won’t regret it!

Gavin Eisenbeisz

Hi, I'm Gavin!

I own Two Star Games, an award winning indie game studio, and I have been creating my own games since 2013.  Since then I've published games like Cloud Climber, and My Beautiful Paper Smile, and am currently developing Choo-Choo Charles.  My games have been played by hundreds of thousands of people, been featured by PC Gamer, have been on the front page of sites like Steam, Itch and Gamejolt, and have been played by popular influencers like Markiplier, and FGTeeV.

I've accumulated extensive knowledge of game art, storytelling, design, and of tools like Unreal Engine over the years.  It's my goal here on Udemy to provide some of that knowledge to you, in a complete and comprehensive way, so that you can start creating the experiences that you want to create.

The best unreal tutorials I've found, and I spent some time looking. I have coursera premium but just wasnt getting along with any of the tutorials i tried in this category (general game logic and dev, blueprints etc.). I was looking for a balance of theory and explanation with doing stuff. I chose Gavin because he seemed to say true things in an interview I watched, and he's a successful indie developer. He's made money with his games so however he does it is good enough for me.

I've enjoyed this course so far. It provides a good overview of using Unreal Engine in the context of developing a game. My only quibble is that it is a little outdated in that there are some features of UE that are no longer part of the application or are done differently. Perhaps a Version Addendum tab could be added to the course content where the author could make those observations and workarounds as they come up. But all in all, the course is a great jump start into the world of game dev via Unreal Engine.

A very good course to start off your UE5 journey with, teaches you some of the basic UI navigations and systems you're more likely than not going to use in pretty much every project going forward. The pacing of the course was well organized however what I think was lacking is more interpersonal appliance of taught engine mechanics towards different use cases. What I mean is the teaching is very linear, and without knowing what scope the tools you were taught can be used in might leave users dumfounded when trying to apply them in different scenarios. Nevertheless I highly recommend this course, using it and others from different platforms and different game developers to explore the vast use cases of the tools UE5 provides.

I have watched several beginners Blueprint tutorial (making game) but this tutorial and instructor makes everything way easier than looks like. It is my first time I feel I understand everything. + He doesn't jump every windows and don't make your head confused why and what! + Clear explanation. + Short time. Many tutorials way to long(30 hours...) They talked a lot the core might be 5 hours but you have to listen or watch the full length of the tutorial (I am watching even 3x but getting tired very quickly This training well prepared for timing. + You got what you want (main page, dead...etc) - I could not find any . Not minus but my personal desire : packaging and make resolution choose for main menu could be nice Personal advice: It is better to watch some Blueprint explanation trainings (variables, macros...etc) would help a lot which I did and got a lot benefit. Wish: I hope I will see similar training from the instructor like that training and Thank him to share his knowledge, experience with me . Overall : One of the best training for beginners UE-Blueprints users.

This course was fun, compact and perfect for getting started with the UE5. The pace was very good and felt like progress is being made constantly. The course moved through the Blueprint side of things quite quickly, but this was to be expected as the focus is in making your first functional game. I went through the content using UE5.4 and encountered no big hiccups due to the different UE version. The instructor is very good and focused and had included all the necessary resources in the lessons. Great course and will definitely check out his other courses as well!

Great value for the money! This course will make you feel powerful, motivated, and eager to learn more! It is basic, but I believe it is by design. It's simple and short enough for a complete beginner to quickly get his hands on Unreal Engine and start making stuff. The pace is excellent, you'll start making stuff and getting results from day one. I've purchased way more advanced and lengthy courses and ended up bored and eventually gave up. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get a feel before moving on to more advanced subjects. Warning: as others have mentioned, it is a little outdated. You might encounter some things that have changed places in the Unreal Engine interface, and a couple of things are now named differently in the blueprints. At first, I was annoyed but shortly after I figured it out by myself; it only takes a few minutes of googling around. Even though it is not a big deal, I do wish the author would have placed a note to point people in the right direction.

The course directly gets to the point, even though it covers only basics, the instructor is really competent in a way how the course must be delivered - no empty talk, everything is right to the point. I finished the course having a game, very simple game, however completed and fully functional project with GUI and some basic mechanics. I've added some things like timer, which shows time the player spends on every level, Niagara visual effects and some GUI sounds. I have also changed the gems counting system. Overall I feel like the course inspired me to work and dive deeper, unlike some other overrated courses here, where you spend dozens of hours on nothing.

This course was decent. The blueprint code was easy to complete, and the end result was impressive. I do have some concerns, however. The course was recorded using an early access version of UE5, and the official versions differ significantly in UI and some elements (like how the widget blueprint is set up). I managed to get around the differences because I have had prior experience with game engines such as Unity. This would be difficult for beginners to figure out though. In the end, I managed to complete a good game. Check it out: https://dudemanem.itch.io/polyverse

This is the first course in Unreal Engine that I've completed. Having some minimal background in Unity & GameMaker, I found this course easier to understand compared to when I was just starting out. With the teacher's calm and energetic voice, I never felt sleepy. His "follow my lead" teaching style helped shorten the total hours on this course while still being able to deliver at the end, a complete and good looking single player game. I was a little disappointed though that there was no mention on how to "Package the Project" and be able to generate an executable file. That means the students will not be able to quickly distribute their games to other people for feedback. Furthermore, optimization was not considered in the creation of the resulting game. An example of this is the multiple uses of the "Event Tick" node, a known resource hogger. Some Sections may also need to be rewatched as the teacher's explanation and/or comments can be too fast at times. Nevertheless, I am still satisfied having completed this course. I just wish it will be updated in time with more lessons to make this a truly complete course on the basics of Unreal Engine 5. By the way, I found these minor differences in the engine version I was using (vers. 5.0.3) vs. what is presented in this course (vers. 5) when I was following some lessons: - The use of Equal nodes: "==" only works for numbers now while "===" should be used for comparing string. - A "Canvas Panel" is not automatically generated anymore in Widget Blueprints. In closing, I recommend checking out some of the games in Steam made by the teacher. Three of them are free and are very short but quite interesting. I have played "Cloud Climber" and "My Friend is a Raven". His upcoming game "Choo-Choo Charles" looks superbly creepy and has an innovative mechanics & concept!

This was exactly the course I was looking for. Instructor is concise and demonstrates the use of Blueprints beautifully. Even learning these basics allowed me to confidently build new features to the game that we build throughout the course / start my own games with ease. Further more, if you have any background in programming in general, you'll love the pacing here. Gives a concise explanation about a node and doesn't bore you with unnecessary banter which means you are constantly building new features. I noticed a few reviews complaining about how he didn't go into detail about why certain things work but from my experience, he was very thorough (although concise) in explanations. While I understand dry lectures work for some, it definitely doesn't for me. I personally hate 20 min lectures on 1 node. I commend the instructor for a well executed course. Looking forward to learning more.
