User Experience Design Fundamentals (Udemy.com)

Design Web Sites and Mobile Apps that Your Users Love and Return to Again and Again with UX Expert Joe Natoli.

Created by: Joe Natoli

Last updated December 2019

Our take

Based on the ratings of 19,549 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.

A theory-first walk through Jesse James Garrett's five planes of UX, strategy, scope, structure, skeleton and surface, taught by Joe Natoli over about 10 hours and 53 lectures. There are no quizzes, exercises or design tools involved. It suits developers, business owners and content people who need to understand why sites and apps work or fail, rather than aspiring designers who want to build a portfolio in Figma.

Reviewers like Natoli's delivery and his examples, the Florida 2000 ballot, Steve Krug's trunk test, the value loop between business goals and user needs. One reviewer now notices bad design patterns everywhere and can explain why. The complaints are consistent, though. The course is lecture only, which one critic calls a podcast, and it repeats itself. It was last updated in December 2019, so the app screenshots and the tools section look dated; one reviewer points out Figma never comes up. Two reviewers also report audio dropping out on some videos.

With about 19,500 reviews and a 4.4 rating, the course still holds up well despite its age, and 84 percent of ratings are four or five stars. The Figma and Adobe XD courses beside it teach a tool; this one teaches the thinking behind the tool. Take it if you want the why. If you want hands-on practice or current software, pair it with one of those instead.

Best forDevelopers, business owners and product people who want the reasoning behind UX decisions, not a Figma tutorial.
Skip it ifYou want hands-on exercises, current tools like Figma, or anything more interactive than slides and a voice.

Pros

  • Clear structure built on the five planes model, so each idea has a place and the concepts stay timeless
  • Memorable real-world examples reviewers keep citing: the Florida ballot, the trunk test, the value loop
  • Natoli's cadence and presenting draw praise; one reviewer says he teaches you how to think, not a checklist of tools
  • Balances business goals with user needs instead of preaching user-first at any cost

Cons

  • No exercises, quizzes or projects; several reviewers found the lecture-only format too theoretical to stay engaged with
  • Last updated December 2019: app screenshots are a decade old and the tools section skips Figma entirely
  • Repetitive in places, and a few reviewers report audio cutting out on some videos
The most interesting thing is that I start to notice good and unreasonable design patterns after going through the course, I can now explain why and suggest improvements.

Truly beginner: no tools or design background needed, only a browser. One critic says you need experience to picture what the lectures describe.

Course Description

Are your web conversion rates low? Do you know whether your web site is effective at meeting your goals?  Do users get "stuck" and aren't able to complete the tasks they want to?  Are your forms effective? How can your mobile app be improved?

It's becoming easier and easier to create web sites and mobile apps-- But harder and harder to measure the effectiveness of these applications. In Joe Natoli's well-designed course User Experience Design Fundamentals you'll learn how to create effective web sites, mobile sites and mobile applications that encourage conversions and leave users wanting more.

It's not enough to simply have a web presence -- you must have a web presence that's effective to be successful.  In this dynamic course Joe will expand on Jesse James Garrett's pioneering model of the critical elements of user experience -- strategy, scope, structure, skeleton and surface. As you learn you'll be able to apply the knowledge Joe teaches in dynamic lab exercises-- and later to your own work as a developer or designer.

If you're a designer moving into a more complex digital world or a developer who has to occasionally function as a designer as well, this course is for you. You'll feel more confident as you make design related decisions about layout, color, information, design and typography after completing this exciting course.

Joe Natoli

For more than 30 years, I've helped organizations build better products and helped the people behind those products become more effective at what they do.

Over 400,000 students around the world have taken my courses across multiple learning platforms, but the number I'm proudest of isn't an enrollment statistic. It's the number of students who've told me they finally understand why things happen the way they do inside product teams, and how to navigate them with confidence.

My career has taken me from startups to Fortune 100 companies, healthcare organizations, financial institutions, and federal government agencies. I've worked with companies like Google, Meta, Broadridge, Kroll, Johns Hopkins and many others, as well as organizations including the U.S. Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Those experiences shaped how I teach.

Most courses focus on process: the steps, the deliverables, the frameworks, the tools.

Those things do matter — but they're rarely what determines whether a product succeeds.

The biggest challenges I've seen over three decades aren't usually technical. They're misunderstandings. Misaligned priorities. Poor communication. Unclear goals. Decisions made without evidence. Teams working hard... but not together.

The course is highly theoretical and lacks interactive elements, making it difficult to stay engaged; I found the lecture-only format monotonous and struggled to remain focused throughout the content.

By Zhongyang Wang on 7/6/2026

The course is very repetitive, maybe the instructor wanted to really get it into our skulls. Some parts are outdated, e.g., domain "content-insight.com" is on sale. Some videos end with a black screen with no audio, weird. But all in all, the ideas are timeless, I've learned a lot. The most interesting thing is that I start to notice good and unreasonable design patterns after going through the course, I can now explain why and suggest improvements. I find that exciting.

By Suresh Pattu on 4/21/2026

yes, liked the part where he talks about prioritising business goals as well, and that as UXD we cannot always just design what best for the users, because if the business does not make money or gets negatively affected, it will also affect the customers. Like the concept of value loop, value going out to the customers/users and the company gets back value in terms of money, cost saved, etc

By Elcira Ibarra on 2/20/2026

The most complete and honest UX course I've ever taken. Joe doesn't teach UX as a checklist of tools or trends — he teaches you how to think. He walks you through the 5 planes of UX with real-world examples, memorable analogies, and principles you can apply immediately. The carpenter's glue analogy for information design, Steve Krug's trunk test for navigation, the Florida 2000 ballot to demonstrate the power of alignment — these are lessons that stick with you. Joe has something most instructors don't: real experience and the honesty to tell you that design isn't about you, it's about your user. That perspective runs through the entire course and fundamentally changes how you see design. I took detailed notes on every lesson and ended up with a reference document I use constantly. This course doesn't expire — the principles are timeless because they're grounded in how the human brain works, not whatever framework happens to be trendy this week. If you could only take one UX course in your life, make it this one.

As a first time learner of UX and UI design, both this course and his UI centered course were incredibly helpful and educational. The courses were interesting, fun and easy to understand. Overall i had a great experience with both courses!

By Sabyasachi Sinha on 2/10/2026

I am truly moved by the amount of detailing, sharing of experiences and coverage of finest details that the author has done. It ranks as the best ever in my learning journey.

By Udemy User on 1/19/2026

Perfect content! Sound is better in section 4 and 5. Sections 1-3 are less good in sound I believe. Section 4 about scope is hard to follow and the final exercise is confusing so I came up without a solid understanding of this part (Compare to other sections in this course)

By Jude Clarke on 12/28/2025

Joe is extremely knowledgable, and The information is presented very well. Great for taking notes. I like the way the Instructor explains each of the slides and bullet points. This course has changed the way I approach design, and inspired me to build from it.

By Angie Zuber on 11/22/2025

The bigger picture about how user focused design influences how the brand is perceived brings home what I was intuitively thinking about my own passion project. I generally want to position myself as someone credible and knowledgable; This piece helps nail that down more definitively.

By Rui Cunha on 11/12/2025

It provides a nice overview to what we should do and analyse, but i feel that there's a lack of practical exercises and comparison in real life scenarios to provide a more immersive learning. Most of the graphical content is still being shown for iOS and Android version of 10+ years ago and this kind of content should be updated.
