Course Description

I’ll cut to the chase: I created this course to answer the following six questions I am asked nearly every day by UX and Design freelancers of all stripes:

  1. How much should I charge?

  2. How do I estimate a project?

  3. What’s the best way to promote myself to get clients?

  4. How do I pitch and present to those clients to land the work?

  5. What should be in my proposal?

  6. What terms should be in my contract, and how do I create one that won’t scare them off?

Why am I asked so often? Because there are simply no good, useful, actionable answers to be found anywhere. Especially online, where articles and videos that promise to answer these questions actually do nothing of the sort. Instead, they give fuzzy, nebulous advice that freelancers can’t take and put to use.

I figured it was time to end all that, because anyone with enough courage to work for themselves deserves a whole lot better.

Working for yourself is hard enough without wasting time on empty promises and slick marketing-speak. So that is NOT what you’ll find here.

Instead, you’ll find practical, step-by-step advice that you can put to use right now — based on my 30 years as an independent Designer and UX consultant. I ran my own firm for 10 years and moved to consulting for the next 20, and to be honest, I made every mistake in the book. Sometimes twice. But as they saying goes, we learn best from our mistakes. And I personally believe that in any situation, either you win or you learn.

So what I’m going to give you here is everything I’ve learned along the way — principles and practices that I follow religiously and lean hard on. Techniques that are as responsible for my success as the value I give to clients when doing the work.

And you can ask me any and all questions you have along the way; I answer every single question and message I get, no exceptions.

If you’ve ever asked yourself any of the six questions above, or ever had a moment where you felt like “I don’t know what I should do here,” then this course is the answer you’ve been waiting for.

Let's get started.

Joe Natoli

For more than 30 years, I've helped organizations build better products and helped the people behind those products become more effective at what they do.

Over 400,000 students around the world have taken my courses across multiple learning platforms, but the number I'm proudest of isn't an enrollment statistic. It's the number of students who've told me they finally understand why things happen the way they do inside product teams, and how to navigate them with confidence.

My career has taken me from startups to Fortune 100 companies, healthcare organizations, financial institutions, and federal government agencies. I've worked with companies like Google, Meta, Broadridge, Kroll, Johns Hopkins and many others, as well as organizations including the U.S. Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Those experiences shaped how I teach.

Most courses focus on process: the steps, the deliverables, the frameworks, the tools.

Those things do matter — but they're rarely what determines whether a product succeeds.

The biggest challenges I've seen over three decades aren't usually technical. They're misunderstandings. Misaligned priorities. Poor communication. Unclear goals. Decisions made without evidence. Teams working hard... but not together.

I enjoyed the introduction to the topic. I don’t fully agree with the “your answer should always be yes” but advice on how to deal with clients is golden. I’ve got a general formula for pricing however, no concrete numbers in the advice yet. I know not to undersell myself, but I don’t know how to estimate what is the right price.

I have gained much knowledge and informative and impressive actionable tips toward freelance business as a UX designer and the most part that I have extremely benefited from is the contract section and dealing with clients thank you Joe for this wonderful course so you highly another good review of this course

I've taken a few of Joe Natoli's courses and one thing he reinforces in every course is creating the right mindset. I've read reviews that highlighted a need for more practical components in his courses and also highlight that videos need to be updated to keep with current software or designs etc I take a different approach. While taking notes I've realized there's so much of wisdom packed into every course and every sentence that it does become very practical when applying these insights to my own work. Also, this may not be for every use case but the information he shares is timeless in the context of applying it to design for instance. I come from a fine art background and I am no expert in digital design but I appreciate the information that Joe Natoli shares and his focus on shaping our mindset to think and act like UI/UX design professionals.

It was good and I needed to hear a lot of stuff that Joe said, would definitely recommend it to any beginner freelancer or anyone starting their own business, or if they are not profitable and struggling. However, some sections are only applicable to US businesses. I am going to start applying the things Joe taught me so wish me luck!

By Nuphar Katzman on 11/29/2022

I think the course is great. but some of the content is not directly relevant for users out of US so maybe so give some option to pass the specific things for US residents (of course to keep an option to watch it if someone wants).

By David Montenegro on 11/29/2022

I mean, Joe is the best: no fluff, solid experience, straight to the point. He's the mentor you need at any point of your career. I only wonder if what he says, despite being rather universal on paper, is actually applicable to any other market than US (for instance in Italy it is hardly applicable, in my humble opinion). Besides this side note this course, like all the others, is top-notch. The more I watch, the better it gets.

Two sessions in and I am absorbing and loving what Joe is saying like a sponge, because this is about our day to day reality of tuning a business and proving a project. Can’t wait to listen to the rest. Thank you Joe, as always really straight forward, backed by experience from real life material!

By Aliana Manteria on 12/15/2021

Thank you for stressing things that need to be addressed in order to maintain credibility. Some of the content in the course is going a bit over my head because I'm new at this, but I'm grateful to learn about what's necessary to incorporate in a contract, specific things that can be tax deductible, and above all else, not to charge by hour lol. Looking forward to the rest of the course!
