Course Description
What do YOU want to know about Unity but have been afraid to ask? Do you think your questions are too trivial to become an entire course? Every day Dr Penny de Byl receives messages from her students asking for assistance on a wide variety of topics that would benefit from a short tutorial. In this course, Penny puts her 25 years of game development, research and teaching into practice to answer your questions in a variety of popular short workshop based tutorials.
Topics covered include:
The Unity Entity Component and Job System
Targeting Missiles
In-game Quest Systems
Reading and Writing to a Database
Animating Facial Expressions
Introduction to Augmented Reality for Android and iOS
Object Pooling
Working with Asset Bundles
Contents and Overview
Section 1:
The course begins with a section examining the new Unity Entity Component and Job System where you will build a planet simulation with 50,000 planets that orbit and are under the gravitational influence of four suns.
Section 2:
Following this, a section examining the creation of target-seeking missiles will cover basic line of sight missiles that remain locked onto a target, after being fired, as well as the addition of a waypoint system that gives missiles interesting curved and funky trajectories.
Section 3:
The next section steps through the ground-up creation of an in-game quest system. Starting with a simple third person game environment, you will build a quest system which monitors player progress, as well as cover the Unity fundamentals of the UI system to support its presentation.
Section 4:
In this section you will learn how to access an online database from inside Unity to store game data. Through the use of a free online database service, you will follow along as we create a database and write simple PHP, mySQL and C# to link a Unity application with player details stored on an external server.
Section 5:
If you've ever wanted to add real-time facial animations to your own characters to bring them alive, this section is for you. In it you will add emotional expressions to a character and learn how to blend between them with code. We will also add extra believability to the character by adding blinking and eye gaze dynamics.
Section 6:
Want to learn how to make augmented reality on your mobile phone? This section will step you through developing several augmented experiences that you can try on your Android or Apple devices. Using the Wikitude SDK with a special student license just for being enrolled, you'll have your first AR app up and running in 5 minutes.
Section 7:
Object Pooling is a very popular game design pattern that will help you save on memory usage. It's great if you need to create a lot of resources, such as bullets or obstacles. This section will show you how to build such a system that can be applied anywhere in your own games, through the development of an asteroid shooting game.
Section 8:
In this section you will learn how to work with Unity's Asset Bundles. These are external resources that you can call into your game at any time. You'll learn how to create an Asset Bundle from scratch and then how to load them into your project at runtime, from both a local drive as well as an online URL. I'll also show you how to load and swap player characters at runtime and how to expand the bundle after a games release to continue to bring in new content.

The explanations given are stripped down to the basics and very straight forward. The instructor makes each of the concepts easy to understand. Each lesson is just the right size and not bloated with any unnecessary complexities. This is a great beginner introduction.

It's a bit hard to rate this course overall because there are so many topics, but Penny is thorough and clear throughout all her courses in general. This one currently covers: DOTS (ECS) - Target seeking missiles - Quest system - DB IO - Animating facial expr - Intro AR - Object pooling - Asset bundles

Every course I have taken from Dr. Penny de Byl is so incredibly informative. I only needed this course for the information on the Unity/MySQL database setup and as usual, my expectations were exceeded. I am looking forward to diving into the other content as well!

She is clearly a practiced educator. She presents good examples explained concisely. There’s not a lot of time wasted with typing code or editing bad code. Instead she explains the code clearly while also explaining the development choices that were made. Excellent. Thank you.

I thought for a long time what can be written, because course is good enough without any comments, but I want to give a feedback to push it up. Dr. Penny's courses (everyone) are some of the most useful in my collection. Unlike hobbyists, there are many mathematical and academic concepts that are skipped in most courses. Sometimes there are a lot of useful literary recommendations, and again, they are academic, not amateur. I am glad that the Ph.D. has created such good content for people who cannot apply to academia or university like me.

It's hard to come up with good intermediate-level projects – ones that are built up enough to demonstrate a concept/technique without getting bogged down in implementation details. But Penny is great at it! I'm very familiar with Unity and with programming but I'm finding these walkthroughs very helpful as a basis for thinking about my own projects.

Very early in... I was expecting a bit more advanced information from part 1 of the ECS system section. The entirety of this part one didn't really do anything ECS related at all... It was just a simple set up of a scene and gameobjects for a very simple example. Personally, I think that could have been skipped entirely if the resources are shared. If a user is learning ECS this early on, it takes a much greater understanding of Unity and development in general than what it takes to setup such a simple project from premade resources, so it seems pointless to explain in such detail how to do this, rather than really diving straight into ECS which takes so much more to understand. I cant help but feel that the ECS information ahead is going to be incredibly shallow given that 30% of the section was setting up a non-ecs scene. However, I do enjoy the teacher and the explanations/tutorial they are giving ARE very clear. This is my first Udemy course so I dont fully understand why its asking me for a review on the first section... I'm sure my opinion will change throughout the course.

I love that you are covering some intermediate game development topics here in bite-sized tutorials that I can take as I need them. (I am tired of slogging through beginner tutorials, just so that I can learn one new technique.) For example, I am writing my first adventure game, and needed help developing a quest system. Your section on quests is focused, simple and to the point. It looks like it will be easy to use it as a starting point for my own quest system. Thank you!

I was a little hesitant to purchase this course at first. I wasn't sure of the the direction the other students would be requesting. After finishing Dr. Penny's AR section, I was certainly glad I did! This is the 4th course I've engaged in by Penny de Byl, and she is the only instructor I trust on Udemy. Every single example, explanation, and project is highly comprehensible and fun. She has a very unique way of getting across to her students, unlike any other tutorialist I've encounted on Udemy.

I have been looking for a course for Unity just like this one for a long time, not one that teaches the same thing most other courses teach, just in a different way. But one that takes obscure topics and fully explains how it works and how to do it in your own programming. This course is Awesome!
