Course Description

Learn how to build a complete pixel platformer in Godot 4 by following along with this course!  Whether you are new to game development, new to the Godot engine, or want to improve your skills with some high level design principles, you will learn a lot here!  I recommend at least having a basic understanding of game engines and writing scripts before starting this course.

Each section of the course generally focuses on 1 aspect of the game; Character, Levels, Treasure, Enemies, etc.  The sections are further divided into 7 video lessons, each focused on teaching 1 feature of the Godot engine, 1 script, or 1 specific part of game development.  By the end of each section, you will have a template for building the various aspects of your game.  There is an assignment you will need to complete before proceeding on with the rest of the course, repeating many of the lessons taught throughout the section to implement more of the game assets, while also providing extra challenges for those who want to try them.  The challenges are optional and are not required to proceed with the lessons.

This course includes scripting in the Godot scripting language.  If this is your first time using scripting, you're welcome to follow along and I will explain individual items as we go.  To avoid overwhelming new students, I will try not to explain everything all at once, but focus on individual elements that are relevant to each lesson.  If you have experience with scripting in other languages, Godot script is extremely easy to pick up and you will be able to appreciate how well it is optimized for the engine and game development in general.

The assets used in this course are available for free on itch and FreeSound.

Upon completion of the course you will have a complete game that you can upload and share.  Since everything taught in this course uses design patterns and good practices, the skills and techniques you learn will allow you to expand this project or use it as a template for something entirely of your own design.

The content is very good and high quality, my only problem is the pacing teach, and it's so rushed. I prefer more of slow paced explaining the point one by one to understand it, then absorb the content. This is more of a youtube video than course. Either way, it was helpful. If this course was something like Christian Koch or Gianny Dantas courses, I would give it five star. I don't understand why the instructor didn't use inheritated scene, and built the game in more of component-based design given that is how godot is designed. I will still recommend it for the content of the course, though I wish there is an improved version in the fututre. Becuase, the content is really gold. Either way, good luck.

EDIT: Came back with a bit more knowledge to finish this course and I will still give it 3 stars. By the end you have a decent foundation to make a real game of your own, but what I've learned outside of this it would need some restructuring. Especially the save/ load system as it's the most basic it can be, and not hard coding some things to the Root. It would have been nice to see more custom enemy logic rather than using the Player script for them, but I understand why for the lesson. Just fun to see how others do this stuff. The overall pace felt very rushed, this is not quite for beginners just starting out, and some parts could use more focus on the tools of the engine like the state machine. It's not intuitive at all as to how it works. I personally scrapped it and made a enum state machine instead. I appreciate the lesson regardless, and thank the creator for taking the time to make this, I still learned a good deal.

Great course, different insights into how to do things compared to some of the other courses I have taken. It should have been 5 stars, but there wasn't a download for the assets without resorting to a Q&A post which linked to it. Later into the course it felt like I had to keep stopping to go search for and download a new audio asset every 2 minutes. Just tell me everything I need right at the beginning of the course or at least the section. Still, would recommend this course if the topic interests you.

Had to leave the course for a bit cuz i couldnt figure something out. I think I was looking at it for too long and when I came back to it I figured it out. Maybe have a check list at the end of each video and that way you can see what you missed if you cant get stuff to work. For me it was connecting the on_body_entered to the coins. I hit enter vs hitting connect and the green arrow never came up to connect the coins to react to the player.

A great course, there are a lot of advanced topics covered and detailed explanations from the teacher. I wanted to break the beginner level in Godot and I feel that this is an excellent starting point in that journey. What I would recommend to improve the course: - Try to add static types whenever its possible. There are some dynamic params and variables that will be hard to understand when the project grows and ages - There is one practice that I didn't like here that is the child node calling the parent caller node directly in its script, it feels like breaking the encapsulation principle . I'm not an expert in game development but there must be another better way to achieve this using signals Besides these suggestions, its a great course, thanks for all the effort and love applied here, deserves 5 stars

This is the best Godot 4 tutorial I have come across. The instructor explains things in an understandable way. They also use more advance techniques than other tutorials that will help if you want to build big projects.

It's great for a beginner Godot developer. One of my favorite tutorials so far. I understand the code pretty well -- It's not too complicated. The instructor is showing how to use a lot of useful tools. The Assignments in between chapters help get a better grasp of everything. Once I finish, I think I'll have a good basic framework for a first game that I can modify and play with my friends.

A short but dense course, giving a gentle but non-trivial introduction to the Godot 4 engine as well as the platforming genre. This is one of the rare intermediate courses where the finished project actually has a framework to support the majority of considerations for a basic platfoming genre game. This is an excellent course to get acquainted with Godot 4 if you're coming from another engine and but also a great exposure some of the more rudimentary challenges in game design if you're closer to a novice in general. Challenges / assignments are actually robust and will require effort from the student far beyond simple multiple choice questions. Some of the videos will move a bit quickly and certain modifications might go unnarrated, but overall it's not an issue since you can always slow down the video or just rewatch it. Explanations might seem sparse at times but the reality is that game development is very complex and the sooner you develop the habit of self-sufficiency via experimentation or self-guided research on specific topics the better your journey as a developer will be. For a course of this length and cost, you are given good starting points that you can refine and pursue further should you desire.

Short answer: Excellent. Even with alot of free solid tutorials out there. I WOULD buy with CONFIDENCE more product/content from this man. I look forward for more courses. Long answer: I, am a complete noob, non coding, small brained student. Thomas explains enough to get you thru. While not painstaking explaining every code of line its enough that if you just copy you will make the game. Make no mistake, I am impressed by the amount of content that is packed in. precise, easy to understand, STEP by STEP explanation, that moves as a solid brisk pace, with cool details/ ideas that make a 2d platformer look more lively. aka the man delivers what he promised. "Build a complete pixel platformer in Godot 4!- from scratch." Plus its using the newer godot version. Closing remarks: yes some people complain its low volume, I admit I semi agree but I, personally, found no difficulty.
