Our take
Based on the ratings of 3,591 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.
A free, one hour introduction to getting a WordPress site online without code, taught by web design coach Christine Maisel. Published in 2014 and last updated in 2017, it runs 23 lectures across four short sections: setting up WordPress and hosting, adding themes and plugins, then a brief post-launch wrap-up. About 82,000 students have taken it, and it holds a 4.4 rating from around 3,600 reviews. It is aimed at people who have never touched WordPress, especially those thinking about building sites for clients, and it works best as an orientation rather than a full build-along.
Reviewers like Maisel's delivery. One calls her presentation about the best they have seen on Udemy, and several praise the clear structure, the glossary of terms and the resource list. The complaints are consistent, though. Multiple students say the course jumps from a fresh dashboard straight to a finished, themed page without showing the steps in between, which is exactly what beginners wanted to see. One reviewer found that WordPress menus had moved since the videos were recorded, two wanted a hands-on project, and another felt the course nudges people toward the instructor's paid courses.
For free and about an hour, it is a fair deal if you just want to know what WordPress is and how a site gets online. Anyone who wants to actually build a working site step by step will be better served by one of the longer beginner courses it sits beside. Treat this one as a warm-up, not the main event.
Pros
- Free and about an hour long, so it costs nothing but a lunch break to find out what WordPress involves.
- Students praise Christine Maisel's clear delivery and well organized lessons.
- Includes term definitions and a resource list that reviewers found genuinely useful.
- Covers hosting, plugins and setting up an email list, not just the WordPress dashboard.
Cons
- Last updated in 2017, and one reviewer found WordPress menus had already moved since recording.
- Jumps from a blank dashboard to a finished themed page, skipping the steps beginners most need.
- No hands-on project, and one student felt pushed toward the instructor's other paid courses.
This course gave a quick description of how to get a site up and running quickly. There is definitely more to learn after this, but this will get you up and running.
Genuinely for first-timers with no coding or WordPress experience; anyone who has already installed a theme will learn little.
What you will learn
- By completing the assignments in the course notes along the way, you will have a fully functioning website or blog by the end of the course.
- Be able to set-up and fully manage a WordPress website with no coding required.
- Get the skills needed to make money offering web design services to others

As I was trying to replicate everything that was exposed in a localhost, I realized that some menus were changed from the version that was created to the current one. I had to repeat what was being exposed to what the reality was. However, in general, it gives you a holistic view in the process. I will say though, the material is good.

The course is simple and straight to the point. You skipped the main part where you were going through setting up the website and all of a sudden you went from putting things together to already installed your theme and having it already arranged. I think this is a crucial step that's missed, especially for beginners.

Great information. The instructor is knowledgeable, comes cross very friendly, and speaks nicely. Instead of saying some things that you could implement, that there was an example of action and outcome. Any case, small thing. I wasn't there helping her design it yet she's worth following and then some... so I did. Her teaching and experience are amazing!

Just finished this course – wow – what a wealth of information. I liked how the course was structured and was very easy to follow. I especially liked the additional resources page. This course is a great place to start if you don’t know anything about WordPress and I am sure it is helpful to those who have some experience.

This is a very good course that has been well thought out and follows a logical order. The course covers topics such as how to install Word press. The difference between pages and posts. The wordpress Dashboard is looked at in depth, including theme types(paid verses free, advantages and disadvantages) ,plugins and widgets customization are also addressed. The video / Audio quality is excellent. The tutor is very knowledgeable with good feedback when questions are asked by the student. Course presentation is fantastic, with the tutor delivering clear presentations in an easy to listen to way with enthusiasm.

Thank you Christine for another great Course! I have purchased almost all of Christine's courses for personal as well as business purposes. I purchased her courses for several reasons. One she knows her stuff and is good at teaching it. Two she is very professional in every course with a sincere desire to see her students succeed. I highly recommend all of her courses you won't be disappointed!

I have gone through a number of basic WordPress courses on Udemy and this is my favorite so far. I liked the included term definitions and resources as well as practical examples such as setting up email list. Good site example. I would have liked to see a module to overview about SEO with the usage of a recommended SEO plugin -- but otherwise very good.

This was the second of Christine's courses I've purchased. This course was not as detailed nor explained as well as her web design business course. I was hoping for more detail in adding text and images as in a walk-through as opposed to just saying " you can also add text and images by going here and here". In my opinion there was far too much detail in adding and configuring plug-ins when this is basically self explanatory. I'm sorry, but there are FREE tutorials on YouTube that are far better than this one! The course seemed like a basic run-through of what most people should already know about these subjects. If one is going to pay a premium there should be more detail and not LESS! Based on these criteria and others I cannot recommend this course and must seek a refund.

I purchased this course as part of a package to learn WordPress over a weekend and I feel this course does do a good job of providing you the necessary tools to allow you to be comfortable using the WordPress platform. I feel I've learned a lot listening to the course over the past 4 days. I held off on giving the course 5 stars because I felt it was a bit short and could have provided a bit more detail in a few areas. Overall a good to very good course. Worth the money and time.
