Course Description

Learn how to Create Powerful Rhythmic Ostinatos

Hello and welcome all Music Composers & Producers! My name is Mike, and I will now teach you how to create rhythmic ostinatos, to add that powerful, driving energy into your music compositions.

Get a Complete Guide of Ostinatos

  1. Learn the Sounds, Articulations & Styles

  2. Watch Live Examples of Ostinatos in Action

  3. And get lots of Practical Tips & Tricks

You will learn how to create:

  • Straight Ostinatos

  • Bouncy Ostinatos

  • Harmonic Ostinatos

  • Melodic Ostinatos

Ostinato = Drive and Energy

The focus of ostinatos is on rhythm and pulse. And even though you can switch notes a lot to follow chords and harmonies, the main purpose of an ostinato is to add that persistent drive that adds energy into your music.

Ostinato is the Italian word for stubborn, persistent or obstinate. Knowing this will help you get a better sense of the true meaning of an ostinato. A rhythmic note pattern that feels repetitive.

In the end, you will be able to create any type and style of ostinato for your music, with the practical knowledge you will gain from this course.

My name is Mike, music composer and sound designer since 1998. And I truly love to inspire, motivate and educate creative people like you.

Take Action Now!

Now it is time for you to take action, and dive into the world of powerful, driving ostinatos for music composition. Let's do this...right now!

While the material was informative about Ostinatos it did not really do much in the way of practical exercises on each type, analyses of different ostinatos or really do much that would facilitate creating ostinatos.

By Paul John Cannon on 2/8/2025

It would be nice to have an "exercise or two" with instructions (Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, and Percussion). Why? So I can practice the exercise (repetition deepens the Impression). Just a few simple exercises, nothing too deep that fits any DAW.

I loved this course. I could immediately apply the well-structured concepts Mickael presented, and I especially loved the track breakdowns in the last part of the course. So many things just clicked while doing the course, and I have many extra ideas I can apply to my compositions. I very much look forward to taking another one of Mikael's courses.

Another fantastic course from Mike. Explanations and demonstrations are excellent. My one suggestion is to have a section that shows the ostinato's actually being built - the sound design course has this feature. However, this is a great little course. Thanks Mike.

By Rolando Rodriguez on 8/22/2020

Very definitive with the description of categories. This helps to simplify and make the concepts more relatable and understandable, allowing us to know when to use certain ideas for an intro, verse, chorus, bridge or solo.

By Ariel Gungil on 5/11/2020

The instructor is methodical in teaching ostinatos. I learned clear foundational tools in music. And the instructor provided instructions to create my own ostinatos in my DAW, further cementing my knowledge and understanding of the material. This instructor is everything I've ever wanted from a musical senpai. I 100% recommend.

This is my third course with Mikael. The reason I return is because he is able to demonstrate what he is teaching, with sample music he has composed, and live-action techniques. While brief and straight-forward, Mikael keeps lessons fun, relevant, and interesting, even when returned to. Mikael's enthusiasm and friendliness is also a lesson in how to approach one's own music, techniques, technology, and work-flow. Thanks, Mikael, for offering tremendous value.

I love this course! Mike is an excellent instructor and he obviously put a lot of time and effort into preparing and recording it, and is highly knowledgable and practical with the topic. I had a basic knowledge of ostinatos before the course, but it greatly expanded my understanding in a way that will have an immediate, significant impact on my music. I took many pages of notes that will serve as a reference guide while composing and arranging. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talents, Mike!

By Mike Whitney on 3/19/2019

Excellent. Highly recommended. Been waiting for an in depth ostinato course! This is one of my favorite composition courses. My ostinatos always sounded thin, and this course really helps me understand how to get a much richer sound. Instead of just giving a couple typical ostinato patterns, like many tutorials, this course goes in depth on many different approaches and styles. Ostinato sections in other courses have been hard for me to follow as they don't usually break down exactly what is happening. But the instructor gives complete step by step instructions and explanations.

By Brendon Hayes on 2/16/2019

This course is perfect for anyone wishing to expand their music toolbox, and sound more professional and polished. Many great sounding examples that Mike breaks down into their elements so you know exactly how to get that professional sound. Highly recommended.
