Course Description
Have you ever wanted to make an iPhone app? Did you get lost in YouTube videos or online blog posts? This is the course for you!
My name is Nick Walter and I am a self taught iPhone programmer. I know what it feels like to start from the beginning. In my course I will teach you Swift 4 and how to make iOS 11 apps. What will we make?
- Emoji Dictionary - A simple app to help us learn about TableViews
- ToDo List - A todo app that teaches us about CoreData
- Collector - Learn to work with the camera as we make an app to catalog a collection of something (video games, movies, stamps, etc...)
- TalkBoy - Record sounds using the microphone and play them back. This one is fun!
- Augmented Reality - Using 3D animation we'll make an airplane move around in our world.
- Machine Learning - We'll create an app that will try to detect the subject matter of any image. Very fun!
- Snapchat Clone - We'll use Firebase to make a simple version of Snapchat. Very involved
- Pokemon Go Clone - Learn how to work with maps as we make a clone of most popular iOS game right now
You'll also learn:
- How to submit an app to the App Store
- How to make money with iOS
- Git and GitHub

Hi! I'm Nick, and I love to code. About five years ago I decided that I wanted to learn to code, but I had limited access to programming resources, and I was getting frustrated with all of the YouTube videos and online tutorials out there. I experimented, struggled, and definitely failed a lot, but I finally got the hang of it, so I decided that I wanted to change the way that people learned to code, and I started teaching. My experience as an online student has directly influenced my teaching style, because I know what it is like to be in your shoes.
When
Apple announced their new programming language, Swift, in 2014, I made my big online teaching debut and created the
internet's first Swift course. Since that time, I have
become a full-time online instructor and I now have courses not only in Swift,
but also in iOS, Android, Django, Kotlin, Python, HTML, Blockchain, etc. I have also created five iOS apps from scratch that are currently live in the App Store and are being used by thousands of users worldwide.
I love sharing my excitement for coding with my students, and I try to make learning as fun and as easy as possible. Thanks for being part of my coding community!

I did encounter a problem is the ToDo List in the following: func getToDo(){ if let context = (UIApplication.shared.delegate as? AppDelegate)?.persistentContainer.viewContext{ if let coreDataToDos = try? context.fetch(ToDoCoreData.fetchRequest()) as? [ToDoCoreData] { if let theToDos = coreDataToDos { toDos = theToDos tableView.reloadData() } } } } In the line if let theToDos = coreDataToDos { error = Initializer for conditional binding must have Optional type, not '[ToDoCoreData]' I did come up with a work around, but don't understand why this is a problem. (Xcode 11)

By and large it was very good. Nick is fun. My only complaint would be there are times the example code changes after a video edit (or whatever) and you have to notice it has changed to get things correct. He does a good job of not overloading a beginner very often, he tries to make it clear that not even seasoned coders know *every* function and call and syntax off the top of their head. Thank you Nick, I really enjoyed your course!

Good but.... Could do with a more in depth introduction to the swift language at the start before moving onto app development. Functions, optionals, closures, Structs vs Classes, pass by reference, triplets etc. Early days and this stuff could be covered further into the coarse. Guards, Optional chaining, exception(error handling), defensive code, MVC, singleton and other design patterns etc. Importance of commenting your code. Maybe introduce swiftyJSON etc.

Though I had to rewind many times as I couldn't see where to click on-screen during some of the instructions. Other than that, have really enjoyed the course, and found great benefit at a pace that felt fast initially, but you get used to it. Helpful examples that relate back to APPs being developed on the course. I still have a long way to go on completing the course (prob 3rd way through), but am kept pleasantly engaged.

He covers the basics for beginners (you don't need to know any programming at all) but he doesn't drag it out so it's a decent pace for people who have programmed before if you double the video speed. At that speed you get the exposure you need to go on your own detours and play around in Xcode. This whole course uses the storyboard in Xcode, so you will not learn how to lay your app out programmatically.

This course breaks the building of apps up into manageable sections that make learning possible. In other courses, the class will be 40 minutes to an hour long. Within that longer time frame, there's simply too much to absorb all at once. This course breaks things up into smaller, more learn-able lessons that result in a more meaningful understanding of the Swift language and how to build apps. I'd recommend this course for beginners and web developers looking to transition into iOS alike.

Nick is a great teacher and very entertaining. He definitely keeps the lectures entertaining with some laughs and amusing character. I gave him a 4.5 star on the one suggestion that when teaching coding to newbies like my self, I really wish he would give more distinctive names to items in code lines (constants, variables, arrays, etc...). This way, when he is teaching code, it is easier to distinguish what other part of code he is referencing (dog, myDog, Dog, theDog, toDo, toDos, ToDo etc...) Once I went back to verify what he was referencing it became more clear but that would be my only recommendation. Otherwise, I feel very confident that once I complete the course, I will be able to build my own apps (I'm halfway through). Thanks Nick!!

This has been the best instructional course for learning Swift and Programming that I have found. It's fun to watch and easy to follow along. While I have known about simple things like defining variable and what strings, ints, floats were for a while I didn't fully understand them till now thanks to this course. I am excited to finish this and use the tools I learned to start my journey in app development.

Very cool, really starting at zero. Would be nice if it could have a quick start for people who already know vars, constants and ifs, so they could skip the first section a little easier. Although there is nothing anybody strictly needs to know, it helps if you have some prior knowledge here. Just knowing how programming works: going from a real-world scenario to some logical building blocks. Apart from that: I really enjoy the training, helps a lot.

Beginning was strong, but the further it went on the more disappointing the delivery became. Rarely explains anything in depth saying "this is just how the things are, don't bother to find out why". More of a "take a fish" instead of "let me teach you how to fish" kind of course, where you just blindly repeat and copy & paste the teachers code without understanding how to put it together yourself in a slightly different scenario. The so called "support" & "ask any question you like" is a joke. Nick almost never answers questions with more than 2 words and lets his "assistants" do the talking. PS. "You will learn how to get your app in the AppStore" promise is a lie. You will not learn that.
