HTML5 Simple Game Programming Preparation (Udemy.com)

Free overview of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for my HTML5 Game Development course.

Created by: Andy Harris

Last updated April 2014

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,525 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2014. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is Andy Harris's free warm-up for his larger HTML5 game course. It runs about 5 hours across 24 lectures and five sections: a basic web page, talking to the page with the DOM, core programming ideas, a small text-based game, and a first look at the simpleGame.js engine. It is aimed at people with no programming background, and the audience notes say kids can follow along with an adult. It has not been updated since April 2014, and that shows.

Reviewers praise the teacher most, calling him welcoming, fun, and easy to follow, and one says he enjoyed the tone and pace of Andy's voice. The complaints are about age and depth. One 3-star reviewer calls it outdated and wants VS Code, addEventListener, and source code included. Others found it too basic, while one reader felt buried under too much code at once. Someone also reports a video stopping in chapter 4. A couple of the one-star entries are off-topic text, not feedback on the course.

Since it costs nothing, the risk is about five hours. Roughly 1,100 of the 1,525 ratings are four or five stars, and the average is 4.4. Treat it as a taster for the full game course, and do the exercises, because the course itself says programming is not a spectator sport. If you already write JavaScript, there is nothing here for you. Anyone who wants current tooling should plan to move on to a newer course afterward.

Best forCurious beginners, or parents and kids, who want a free, gentle taste of web coding before committing to a full game course.
Skip it ifYou want modern JavaScript, downloadable source files, or real depth beyond a slow first pass at the basics.

Pros

  • Andy Harris teaches in a warm, fun voice that reviewers say makes the hours fly by
  • Assumes no coding background, and the audience notes say kids and parents can take it together
  • Covers variables, loops, functions, arrays and the DOM, then builds a small text game
  • Completely free, with a short 24-lecture format and a first look at the simpleGame.js library

Cons

  • Last updated in 2014, so reviewers call it outdated and point to older habits and tooling
  • No coding exercises and only three quizzes, and one reviewer missed downloadable source code
  • Some find it too basic, others say too much code at once; one reported a video stopping in chapter 4
Andy is a great teacher. I loved the way he takes us through each item. Loved it. I may end up enrolling for more sessions from him.
Sunitha, a student

Listed for all levels, but it really suits true beginners, including kids with a parent nearby. Reviewers call it basic for anyone with coding experience.

so far, the course is great: the teacher is so good in terms of speaking and making me feel welcomed in the course; the content seems to be extremely interesting.

For beginners only, outdated and slightly anachronistic ... - No source code included? - Should introduce tools like VS Code and plugins instead of polluting the code with "end if" comments. - Really?! Introducing "//

the instructor is very energetic and find a fun way to teach. Good for kids, too. But -the course has the lecture upto no 24. It doesn't show any more but it won't give you ant certificate as it shows incomplete. That's very dissatisfactory. Otherwise-I was very happy to go with the course.

I failed to submit a rating when I finished this introduction course a couple of summers ago. All of the Andy Harris books and courses are thorough, well explained, and contain concrete examples and resources.

By Delilah Lin on 3/13/2016

A great way to learn foundation HTML. Every section you build a working project, and gives you a sense of how everything comes together with CSS and Javascript in a fun way. Good supplemental material for other study materials!

By John Bosi on 6/20/2015

This course is free and provides examples that would challenge any beginner to HTML and Javascript. The Javascript lesson on arrays provides quality examples for accessing and manipulating the document. He covers a lot of syntactical ground in very little time with Javascript. Overall a very good intro to programming games with HTML5 and Javascript.
