Course Description
How we illustrate and produce 2D artwork is evolving. Utilising 3D applications is becoming more commonplace in a broad spectrum of industries.
The Grease Pencil allows you to illustrate (as well as animate) directly inside of Blender's 3D interface. It may seem strange at first, but creating content with the Grease Pencil is simple, rewarding, and fun!
In this course, Paul will take you from the basics - interface set up and navigation, tools, using brushes and colouring - through to a completed project you can be proud to add to your own portfolio. All the necessary assets are provided, and step-by-step saves are available at the end of each project chapter in case you stumble along the way.
In this course you will learn:
How to set up your interface ready to draw
How to enable and use tools and modes
How to use and customise brushes
How to create materials
How to use Vertex paint mode to create your own custom palettes
How to use modifiers and effects How to composite for a final polished render
By the end of this course, you will have a deeper understanding of what is possible with the Grease Pencil.

This is a brilliant GP course! You get a clear, well-structured progression from the fundamentals to a complete, polished artwork. I learned so many new workflows/techniques that I couldn't have gotten if I were to experiment with GP from scratch on my own. The final mermaid project is a highlight, guiding you step-by-step from rough sketch to a fully lit and composited scene, complete with custom brushes, world/background creation, and special effects like bubbles and lighting. It's a guideline through what a full pipeline might be on the Blender side. One drawback: the course seems to be based on Blender 2.9. But the UI has changed a fair bit since then, especially after 4.3. (E.g. use of brush assets, no guides, different Draw Mode toolbar, lack of tint options.) But the key concepts are the same, and you should be able to adapt accordingly if you do the course while studying the official Blender changelogs.

For me so far, this is perfect. I have worked primarily with Adobe Production Suite and Maya for 3D. I am new to Blender and very interested and enthusiastic about Grease Pencil as I feel I can combine my strengths with this feature. The timing and explanations of this area of Blender is really good and I feel I am beginning to grasp how Grease Pencil functions and how I will be able to apply to my projects. I am a deliberate learner and this is well organized, paced, and holds my interest. Many tutorials move through the information rapid fire and I'm constantly having to stop, go back, watch, and listen again. Here I listen, pause, go to Blender, and apply what was said. In my opinion it is much more efficient and I am already making real progress. Thank you!!

Blender's Grease Pencil is nooo joke! I've long since understood its potential, but lacked the knowledge of how to make use of it at this scale. Thank you for the course. It's quite the treat. I imagine that most who've heard of Blender's Grease Pencil think of 2D animation, which it is surely capable of. What's not mentioned as much is how wonderful it is for illustrations. This course shows just some of how advantageous Grease Pencil is at it. Easy 5 stars. Keep up the good work. Thanks again.

1st off, I want to thank you for this course it is really well made and well explained. 2nd, I was a Clip Studio Paint user. I went to a computer lab in my club to use Clip Studio Paint but I wanted to work from home so I don't Waste time dressing, driving, and going to the club. But when I saw the prices of Clip Studio Paint, I know I couldn't purchase this license every month so I need to find a free alternative. I was already using Blender for 3D sculpting so I thought why not make it my illustrator app also. But when I went on youtube I found nothing on grease pencil. So I went to udemy to find if there was a course and I found yours and thought it looked appealing so I enrolled and I don't regret this decsion> Thank you again for creating this course.

The course is set up well. Everything you learn from the earlier chapters will all be put into use at the project example shown in the end. However, there may be some points where the instructor didn't explain very well. So you might have to go to Youtube to search for some simple ans because the Q&A section is full with unanswers question from months ago.

being a artist myself and very self taught with classes like this the first thing i want to say that grease pencil is a vey unique animal and so I cant dock the instructor for that and how this is handled is quite well their are a lot of moving parts in this tutorial by that I mean that blender has allot of moving parts but the way the course was put together was really done nice with a nice ending I would recommend watching it first and learning some of the stuff first and then going back and trying it and also join the discord I will be going back over and watching it again as well

It is difficult to find Blender Grease Pencil tutorials. If you already know your way round Blender for 3d work then this is a perfect intro to Grease Pencil. I have been looking for exactly this guidance for some time, and it has really helped me get my head round the basics of 2d in Blender and how it differs from other more traditional 2d applications. I hope more advanced topics are covered in the future, especially animation.

I learnt a lot, especially since I knew nothing about the grease pencil to start with. I knocked off 1/2 a star because it covered all the theory in one go and then started on the project. I like to put into practice what I'm learning as I go, I remember it better that way. Also, while he was thorough and slower paced with the theory, the project part felt a little rushed, I had to pause and go back a lot there. But having said all that, I still enjoyed the course and I ended up with a picture I was really happy with, so thank you.

You would be hard-pressed to find a better course on illustrating with the Grease Pencil in Blender. I've gone through the first 20 videos in this course, and I am about to start to first project. This course shows the power of Blender as a 2D illustration tool. I've used and taught Blender in the past (as a BFCT), this is one of best courses I've done. Paul clearly describes the functionality, step-by-step. He obviously knows his craft and enjoys teaching it.
