Course Description

By learning to create Compute Shaders, you will put yourself at the cutting edge of Unity development. Unlike a traditional shader, you can use a Compute Shader to handle any data manipulation problem, where having dozens (or even hundreds) of threads running simultaneously causing a bottleneck in your game to run many, many times faster. In this course you will start from small steps, learning the basics of compute shaders. First, we look at passing data from the CPU to the GPU using buffers. Then we’ll look at using these buffers in our calculations. Once you have this initial grounding, you learn how to use these techniques to create blisteringly-fast post-processing filters. You can use Compute Shaders to handle particle effects and flocking calculations. In the course, you'll create a flock of thousands of birds where each bird flaps its wings in sync with its speed through the air. Divide and conquer is the way, with Compute Shaders. By using hundreds of threads running simultaneously, we develop a GPU Physics engine that can handle thousands of tumbling chess pieces. Compute Shaders are ideal for handling the orientation of grass blades as an avatar moves through grass. The challenging subject of fluids (both 2D and 3D) are covered in the course and you'll see how much this computationally-intensive field benefits from Compute Shaders.

The resources for the course are presented as a code-along version and a complete version and include over 30 different examples. Unity Compute Shaders provides the ideal platform to learn how to handle complex problems in your games. Flocking calculations using the 3 key rules of Separation, Cohesion, and Alignment are covered in detail. The physics calculations to handle fast collision detection and the forces involved are included (both theoretically and practically). Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics is a technique for calculating fluid simulations. We'll take you through it from the foundation level.

If you're working with Unity, you need to understand how to use Compute Shaders to ensure your game has the best performance. After all, why let the GPU sit idle while the CPU is working overtime? You'll see massive performance improvements if you switch some tasks to the GPU and handle them with a Compute Shader.

This course uses Unity 2019.4 and is Windows and Mac compatible.

"Course is super informative with great pacing (on the fast side) and plenty of challenges along the way. The challenges are why I am giving the 5-star rating. These tend to require some thought, but are solvable using what we have learned, and for my taste, just the right level of difficulty."

"This course is absolutely a must for any 3D graphics developer. It is the best resource I have seen online without a doubt. Nicholas is an amazing instructor and he is able to explain really complicated concepts such as Navier-Stokes equations is very simple terms. I would give 10 stars it if was possible. Way beyond my expectations and I will watch it again several times as references. Thank you Mr. Lever for your outstanding work in teaching incredible content with very accessible language. Please more physics simulation :)"

"This is absolutely worth your time and money if you want to learn about compute shaders.  Nik Lever takes the time to explain the relevant code line by line and is clearly knowledgeable about the subject. His jovial British spirit will encourage even the most jaded souls to hone their knowledge as he presents coding challenges that grow incrementally in complexity as the course progresses. Will be checking out whatever course he creates next."

"I have been struggling with a bottleneck in my project and learning about compute shaders gave me a whole new perspective. The instructor knows what he's talking about. This is a very good course on the subject."

This is absolutely worth your time and money if you want to learn about compute shaders. Most of the info about compute shaders I had prior to this was cobbled together from Youtube videos and there were a lot of questions I had. Nik Lever takes the time to explain the relevant code line by line and is clearly knowledgeable about the subject. His jovial British spirit will encourage even the most jaded souls to hone their knowledge as he presents coding challenges that grow incrementally in complexity as the course progresses. Each section builds nicely off of the last. A word of warning and disclaimer: Some reviews state that he does not explain each line of code enough- I did not find this to be the case. The course is intended for Intermediate to Advanced programmers and presupposes that the student will know about Vertex Fragment shaders. I have several years of experience with programming and vertex fragment shaders so I actually enjoyed how he focuses on code relevant to compute shaders rather than feeling the need to explain how every part works. Anyhow! Very good course- Will be checking out whatever course he creates next.

I have minimal experience using shaders. I appreciate how the instructor respects the viewer's intelligence when defining parameters in the shader functions, and explains what they mean. I don't think I could have gotten a good fundamental understanding of what I am doing with compute shaders using just youtube tutorials if not for this course.

I just like the guy, and he explains the things well with helpful figures. edit: I will say that I did prefer the first couple of sections where the code was written and then explained. I felt that as the series went on code was explained as it was written, at which point I lost focus on what was being said. I also felt that more explanation of what was happening was given in the first few lectures. Overall, still very helpful content and I am much further along with compute shaders than I would be otherwise.

(After Chapter 1) This course gives a very good introductory to ComputeShaders. It took me longer than I like to admit to finish the first chapter, because I'm completely new to hlsl and also not quite stable in 3D math. But this course is understandable so far and gives me lots of hints where to read further if I ddon't understand something. That's exactly what I crave for. Experienced guys will like the pace and ambitious noobs like me still can follow along and get plenty of tips and hints to get better. Perfect, thanks!

Hard to keep up with the frantic "code-along" where the instructor just reads the code out loud and doesn't explain what he's actually doing or why. Switching scenes unpredictably and without warning, causing "pause-anxiety" as you struggle to keep up before the code disappears mere milliseconds after the instructor types the last character. Only made harder by the fact that all this happens in light-mode Visual Studio with a background as bright as a thousand suns. Only after reading the code out loud does the instructor sometimes go back and explain some of the code. It's quite a surreal experience after having taken a couple dozen other Udemy courses. Full disclosure: The last quarter of the course improves significantly in these aspects. I don't know if this says more about the course or myself, but I failed more "challenges" in this course alone than all other Udemy courses I've ever taken combined. Do what you will with that information but it felt relevant. All in all, there's a wealth of great information in this course and I appreciate the effort put into it even though I struggled and severely questioned my own intelligence throughout.

By Bryan Safarik on 11/5/2021

The wealth of otherwise hard-to-find information in this course is FANTASTIC! However, given the relative complexity of some material, I would have preferred the instructor replace some of the time spent with juxtaposed "lecture material" & impossible-to-keep-up-with "live coding" with more in-depth explanations of the material itself. It's very difficult to follow lecture material while your brain is also trying to madly type code. Alternately, slow the simultaneous typing/oratory so that an "average" person unfamiliar with the concepts has time to pause the video and catch up with both the concepts and data entry. Like I said, however, besides some frustrations with presentation and pacing, I found the course to be a gold mine of potential real-world dev applications. Cheers!

I first wrote that is was a great course, but I'm editing the review now, when I am close to finishing it. It is not a great course but an overwhelmingly fantastic course much above my expectations! None other course I've taken in the course of last years taught me so much. It is in my opinion above intermediate level. It is good to already have some shader knowledge in general but nonetheless the course provides more than basics for writing and using shaders in Unity. That said I'd recommend taking it after at least a year or more of experience - you will gain much more from it.

I moved on to this course after finishing Penny's excellent shaders from scratch course. Its been great so far after finishing the first two sections. Its introduced the concepts reasonably well, including some really cool examples that I didnt think I would learn how to program this early (the orbiting stars and mesh deformation been two that I've really enjoyed). The only thing I would improve upon is possibly slowing down and taking a bit more time to explain a bit of what is going on. In certain videos the steps go at a really fast rate, and there isn't enough time to really process what is happening in the examples (such as the wood and marble effect module). Furthermore, I feel that the explanation for threads at the very beginning was a bit too vague and rushed without including some further examples of the maths behind them, especially since this is one of the concepts that most people struggle on grasping at the beginning. Other than that it's been extremely informative and can't wait to see the rest of the course.
