Course Description

This course will not teach you to become a programmer.  Programming is like martial arts, it takes years and years of practice.  No course can make you a grand master, no matter what it promises.  What this course WILL do is give you a solid foundation in programming as a skill for life, using C# as the vehicle. You will learn about the fundamental nature of the computer and how to communicate with it through the development of programs, to perform a variety of tasks and solve numerous problems.  Following the same curriculum used to teach 1st year computer science in university in the first 6 months of a degree, you will learn not just what to program but 1) why it is is done like that and 2) how you can broaden your skill set in programming beyond this single course.

The topics covered include:

  • Bits, Bytes and Binary

  • Management and Manipulating Memory

  • Performing Mathematical Operations

  • Designing Dynamic Program Execution with Logic

  • Developing Repetition for Fast Data Processing

  • Handling User Input

  • Reading and Writing to Files

The course material has been developed for students using either Windows or Mac computers, using the freely available Mono C# compiler. It is well paced, covering each concept in bite-sized chunks and filled with hands-on workshops that will build projects across a variety of domains.  Some of the programs that will be written include:

  • a Caesar Cipher for encrypting text

  • a Hangman Game

  • a Number Guessing Game

  • a Chatterbot

  • storing and retrieving names and addresses in a file

  • reading and processing text from a webpage

At the end of this course you will be equipped with a toolbox of skills that you can apply in your job and day-to-day life, making you more employable and relevant in today's marketplace.

What students are saying about this course:

  • Penny is a really good teacher, this is the kind of C# class I've been looking for and it is just right for what I need right now. I would highly recommend it.

  • This course has been awesome. I knew virtually nothing about coding, and now I'm halfway thru, loving it, and learning a TON! Great teacher, clear and concise lessons with plenty of opportunity to learn, test code, experiment, and consistent quizzes and challenges. 5/5

  • I'm an artist, code was always something that I had the desire to learn but at same time I always thought it was something too complex and boring, until I decide to buy this course and start watching these videos. Everything is very well explained, she teaches really well, straight to the point. Now I'm finding it extremely fun to learn and I've been doing the course and watching the videos as if it were a Netflix series. I get excited at every new thing that pops up :D I also love when you have to do challenges, it's like a game, super fun. It is very easy to follow, even if you have zero knowledge in coding, like me when I started. Recommended!

Understood the complete basics of programming, Penny De Byl mam does a great job explaining the most important OOPS concepts which was the foundation for me before i entered Unity. My one suggestion is, for the advanced exercises, if first a algorithm would have been presented, it would have been more clear and easy to follow for a beginner like me, as in the mid, I forget the variables declared above. That's why I feel that method would have been more beneficial, still I understood the concepts very well. I don't want to reduce a star for that part, but still kindly consider giving a step by step protocol for the advanced exercises. Thanks a lot for making me take the first step!

An easy to follow course (once you get the Mono development environment that is used to work). Penny is thorough in how she goes over each command and gives plenty of worked through examples. Some code threw up errors when using the Mono compiler but if you use Visual Studio it should work fine. The whole installation of Mono on Windows was a headache. At one point I thought I had to build it using Visual Studio. The path hadn't been updated after it was installed. A workaround, after install, was to use the Open Mono x86 Command prompt that is installed with Mono, something I Googled. That issue put an initial delay to me learning while I ran around and figured that out. After that though the lessons were clear and easy to follow and I progressed rapidly.

I've taken a few stabs at learning code following along to tutorials, but I never really understood why I was typing the things I was told to type. This course is the first one I've taken that actually explains each piece of code and why they are there. This is definitely a good starting point for someone new to coding. I did start to get a bit lost during the final section when things started moving a bit too fast for me, but I eventually got it after pausing the videos alot. I'm excited to move on to other courses with the understanding I've gotten from this one.

A truly naked start for someone just starting to learn or looking to review the basics of C#. What I like most about Penny's teaching style is she does a fascinating job of describing the theory and background of a new topic, once you start each lecture. She then references back to that theory or background description multiple times throughout the lecture, which helps further develop my understanding of the topic being taught. Lecture videos are kept short, focused, and on point. Penny's teaching style shows she is a tried-and-true teacher in video game development industry.

It covers the basics, but I was hoping for the basics and some depth. I learned a few things, but most of what was taught I already knew. I felt it fell short of what my understanding was as to what this course would teach. I also didn't like the C# compiler interface used - would have preferred MS studio or other window based app. Still I learned a few things so I give this course a 75% score.

I completed this course to get back into the groove of C# syntax after doing mostly JavaScript development. This course provided exactly what I needed. I really appreciate the approach taken in this course - coding in a text editor instead of using Visual Studio and building programs using the Mono framework instead of relying on Visual Studio builds. I have always learned best by coding in a text editor (as opposed to a full-featured IDE like Visual Studio). The requirement to build my own projects and inspect the compilation errors has made me a better programmer and given me a deeper understanding of debugging. I highly recommend this course to anyone who needs to ramp up on C# fundamentals quickly.

Fantastic introductory course to C#. Concepts are explained very well - both aurally and visually - with a number of useful animations. Penny's ability to take something complex (to a beginner) and simplify it - either by analogy or by breaking content down into smaller chunks - is second to none. The exercises at the end of most modules are great for getting you to apply your understanding without being explicitly told what to do - only wish there were more! Also, I found the various Australianisms interspersed throughout the lectures somewhat refreshing! Highly recommended!

Learning to use text and compiler tools from the command line or terminal window is useful and informative and I understand Penny's motivation for doing it. Certainly once you get used to it it's simple and quick but, you will not have the benefit of a debugger as you find in Visual Studio and if this course is aimed at raw recruits then that can be a frustrating disadvantage. Also I think the "bits" and "bytes" discussion should be reserved for those whose have had no experience whatever with computers and programming them and, if it is aimed at those people it really should be more detailed than what is presented. The section on inheritance and polymorphism was not very good, in my opinion, and there should have been more DIY exercises because the concepts can be difficult to understand with just a cursory explanation for those not used to it. It also should have been made more clear that "Beginner's" means "very basic" all the way through - I expected that as the course progressed it would become more difficult but the level of difficulty pretty much stayed the same and the "challenges" disappeared altogether. However, as usual, Penny's delivery is perfect and prepared and that is always worth a high rating.

The perfect course for beginners. I had been working my way through one of those "learn to code as you make games" courses, but I was not learning to code, I was learning how to copy code and I was getting frustrated. So I started looking for a beginners course. I wanted someone who I could understand and who had experience actually TEACHING programming. I cannot emphasize how important that is. There are some great courses on Udemy by brilliant programmers, but they are the equivalent of honors computer science courses for the naturally gifted. Naked C# is the first course you should take if you don't know anything about coding. Penny knows how to TEACH (not just how to code) and you are going to get a solid foundation that will prepare you for more advanced instruction. I'm taking all her courses.
