Course Description

*** Important Course Update ***

In August 2018, Amazon announced that the KDP Print web-based interface would be replacing Createspace as Amazon’s Print on Demand (POD) paperback self-publishing interface. The Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) interface will be familiar to those who have self-published Kindle eBooks on Amazon.

Section 3: Publishing Your Paperback Book via KDP

Has been added to this course to replace the original Createspace publishing instructions retained in:

Section 4: Publishing Your Book via CreateSpace
Section 5: Managing Your Books

All other sections have been kept in place since the process for formatting your document with Microsoft Word has not changed.

Since sections 4 and 5 are only of historical interest, students should skip these sections to view the course conclusion.

Note that there will be significant references to Createspace in the lectures I retained.  Simply replace the word Createspace with KDP Print when you hear it and everything should be fine.

I hope you enjoy the new course,

---Brian

Instructor Details

Brian Jackson

Hello,

My name is Brian Jackson. I'm the author of about a dozen books, the publisher of well over 100 books, and a Udemy instructor with over 40 courses.

This is my story...

1 Origins

I was born in the middle of the last century in Los Angeles, California. I graduated from Humboldt State University, surrounded by the redwoods of Northern California. After 14 years at Lockheed Missiles and Space as an IBM system programmer and 12 years at Cisco Systems as a test engineer, I retired at 48.

I instantly became bored.

2 Community College

To break the boredom, I enrolled at Columbia Community College to take writing, art, acting and statistics classes. I took 24 units over one year and received straight “A”s.

I was still bored.

3 Writing and Self-publishing

I began writing fiction and nonfiction books and self-publishing them on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords in July 2011. Though I wrote and published several books, my self-publishing business didn’t take off until my wife joined me.

4 My Wife and Author, Melanie Jackson

Melanie Jackson, my wife, was an author publishing over two romance novels per year through her New York publisher, Dorchester Press. After publishing 24 novels with Dorchester, the company folded, and Melanie was without a publisher (she wanted to write cozy mysteries anyway).

This was essentially a useful course. Brian J has a very pleasant manner and gives clear instructions. Personally, I found three stumbling blocks. (1) In the introduction he does warn us that two sections (about one hour) are irrelevant because CreateSpace has been taken over by Amazon KDP. He describes the wrong sections. As I'm unfamiliar with all of it I was somewhat confused at first. (2). This is an American course dealing with US sized books. I am used to metric measurements. (3) This course is based on MS Word 2010 (for PC). I am using MS Word 2016 (for Mac). Brian J says that he 'hopes' things will be similar for Mac. Yes, it was possible to find the equivalent features on the Mac program, but it made the whole learning experience more complicated and arduous. I would still recommend this course but please be aware of these potential problems.

excellent course which I enjoyed. I have already published my book on KDP (using his kindle course) and wanted this course primarily for formatting my title for POD. So, although much of this course was familiar or not totally relevant to my efforts I still found it to be worthwhile completing entire course and I did pick up tidbits and tips in practicly evey video.

It's great to go at your own pace. Short modules meant I could fit learning in spare moments of my day. After completing the course, I feel confident I can upload books by myself, without having to incur costs for experts. A really great experience.

He takes you through the formatting and Createspace setup step by step, which is great. There were a couple of pieces of information that he mentioned but didn't know that he should include (like what ISBN means). Maybe discuss why you would put an author bio on the back of the book.

By Mark Owen on 9/11/2017

Good basic stuff. Author often states "I don't know why that is" when he comes across unexpected things happening. This is annoying, and he has done this often in his other courses. Not what I would expect...

Because I like the flow, organization ot this and the information imparted. One improvement I would like to see is. How to setup headers for the individual chapters. IE., the first page of a chapter would have no header or be blank. Second or even remaining pages of chapter would have a chapter header. The third and remaining odd pages of a chapter would have book title and subtitle if any. I would one achieve that?

By Don Mikrut on 7/3/2016

Excellent and very thorough. Highly recommend! Could use an update since the CreateSpace interface has changed. The options are pretty much the same, you just have to look for them because the pages don't look like the Interface in the training course.

I have taken several of Brian's courses and learned so much from all of them. This course was no exception. Brian is great at covering the tiny details that make all the difference in getting something done right while also providing the big picture. I was stalled with CreateSpace for a couple of years. Thanks to Brian, I'm taking the leap. I love this guy!!

By Barbara Workman on 2/9/2016

Going into this course I had no experience using the Createspace platform. This course provided the perfect presentation of information for a beginner such as myself. The course provides step-by-step instructions with the examples as you watch the instructor perform the steps. By the time the course is completed the steps have gone from initial layout of your manuscript format to the actual submission of your print-ready book. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to submit to Createspace.

By Carol Holland March on 2/21/2015

I was able to get my book published on create space, although it wasn't as simple as the course implied. The couse was good and well organized, but it did not cover the more complex formatting issues that come up when you use styles in Word. Production quality was good. Instructor did respond to questions.
