Course Description
Modulation can bring energy, intrigue, and prosody to your songs!
Songwriters from Mariah Carey to Taylor Swift to The Beatles have successfully used these techniques!
What is Modulation?
Modulation, simply, is changing from one key to another key within a song.
For example, you can have a Chorus in the Key of E and then when you get to the Bridge you can modulate to the key of C.
How do you know where to Modulate?
Modulation distance is dependent on how similar keys are. In this course you'll learn how to modulate to close keys as well as far away keys.
Additionally there are multiple ways to modulate to another key. In this course you'll learn multiple techniques and be shown real examples of this happening.
Some of these techniques include:
- Relative Key Modulation
- Parallel Key Modulation
- Relative-Parallel Key Modulation
- Pivot Chord Modulation
- Altered Common Chord Modulation
- Common Tone Modulation
- Chromatic Mediant Modulation
And much more!
I look forward to teaching you and I hope to see you in the course!

I learn a lot. Highly recommend. Just a wish that when we analyze the chord progression and the modulation, we also consider the melody notes in every bar to understand why that particular chord/progression is chosen by the composer?

Wow! I've taken the song science 1-3 courses too, which I thought were really good, but this 4th course was something extra from the instructor (and it kind of complete the circle of songwriting knowledge you've picked up during the previous courses). The course has a lot of practical examples and the concepts are explained really well. I expected much from this course, but it exceeded my expectations by far. Thanks a lot!

The course falls a bit short on content: more examples on each kind of modulations would be a welcome addition. The content is shown by analysis of hit songs, it is not done in a constructive manner. There are no quizzes in between and the quiz at the end is missing too. All in all, it is probably the best course on modulations in the platform.

I am only part way through this course and I have already got information that has really opened my eyes to the different ways i can write my songs with modulation and the different ways I can use it effectively.

I followed the 4 courses (Song Science, 1, 2, 3 and 4) and I found very well. I learned a lot of things. The trainer is knowledgeable and friendly and gives many examples of current songs which makes the lessons lively and not just theoretical. I nevertheless regret that there are not some PDFs with the different notions learned in each lesson, but in spite of that, I give it 5 stars, because the courses are excellent.

The course covers many examples of real world hit songs on how key shifting and modulation can give infinite resources to escape from traditional songwriting formulas and cliches to a whole new universe of creativity, intentions, moods and harmonies. Songwriters, check this one out!

Great instructor and great course. The material and theory is explained very well and good examples to demonstrate the theory. I have loved the series of songwriting courses and I am becoming a better musician as I follow this course and see it in application. Looking forward to more from this instructor.

This course goes through what can be a confusing and daunting subject, and breaks it down into clear and straightforward bite-sized chunks. Having taken this course I feel almost enlightened to a subject I have put off learning. I am now more comfortable using modulation in my songs. Highly recommended for anyone interested in taking their songwriting to the next level.

The teacher is very knowledgeable. I need to see what he is doing not just listen. I didn't finish listening because it was too difficult for me to understand.
By Alain Rameau on 1/1/2017
A great course on modulation and changing key smoothly. Not only because there are not many courses about that topic, but also because it is very clearly explained, despite dealing with complex music theory concept.
