Swift 3 - Learn to Code with Apple's New Language (Udemy.com)

Absolute beginner. Ive watched a few different courses now. Some youtube tutorials, Treehouse, etc. Treehouse is great, but Nick simplifies the basics even further. He doesnt go too in-depth into the concepts, but he explains the basics of them, and that helps keep things in perspective. He doesnt overload you. Everything is kept manageable, and at a reasonale pace. Make no mistake though, as the title of the course suggests, this is purely the bare-bone basics of Swift.

At first I was impressed with the course. I thought it would be very well designed and that I would learn a lot. As the course when on, I found that it was rather off the cuff type of teaching. The examples were not well planned. The exercise examples were poor at best. I'm hoping the course improves, but we're not done yet, so lets see... As the course continued it did get better. The exercises had more meaning when they became interactive. The lessons did improve, although I do think there is room for improvement. All in all, the course is worth the price, but it can be improved.

I wasn't familiar with Swift at all, I ended the course thinking there had to be other features that were left out. For instance, functions were only talked about in regard to changes to how parameters are identified. Also, some exercises that had a prebuilt shell used classes, which were also not in the course. I'd expect something on functions and classes in a course that starts out as if the student hasn't ever programmed before. But, as stated, it helped me learn about Swift and at a good price.

As an adult who has never looked at any code for anything beyond a little basic HTML code, i took the decision to begin trying to learn Swift in order to (eventually) make my own app(s). This course was the first step in my journey. Nick is a brilliant lecturer. Although these are only basics of the Swift 3 language, Nick takes time to explain in great detail what you're doing and why. He's easy to understand and makes it enjoyable. His technique of mixing practicals with the sessions works wonders. Overall the course is interesting and that is largely a result of Nicks work. I now have a basic understanding of Swift and xCode along with a confidence in what I'm aiming to achieve and that last part isn't easy. Especially when learning something as complex as Swift, it's easy to feel overwhelmed rather than feel confident but I'm ready for my next stage in my journey! Thanks to Nick for providing the course, it really helped :)

I enjoy the instructor's style: energetic, fun, and self-effacing. I also like how he shows multiple ways to accomplish things. I left off half a star because of a couple issues. There's an exercise in the middle (a correct answer to which is necessary to get your certificate) that brings in classes and functions, though these are covered nowhere in the course, and an unfamiliar interface I found confusing. And, at least on my MacBook, several of the videos flickered distractingly, which I haven't experienced with other Udemy courses. All in all, I'm very glad I took this and am looking forward to other classes by Nick!

I really enjoyed Nick's class. His enthusiam helps build your own & you will definitely learn a lot if you are new to programing languages like i am. My only recommendation is to go slightly faster in the beginning sections. I feel even for a complete beginner that Nick tends to drag out the beginning sections with too many examples.

The course was pretty good. I gave only 4 stars because it was a bit too elementary, it was more like teaching programming through swift than talk about swift characteristics. For instance, the course did not get into optionals, closures, different types of method parameters, structs, classes which are so important and fundamental to writing or even understanding swift code. Perhaps that was the intended scope but I'd have appreciated a note on all these other things that swift has to offer. I would recommend this course to folks who have absolute beginners with no programming experience. If you have had any programming experience, I'd suggest paying a closer look at the course description before signing up. Having said that, this review wouldn't be complete without the instuctor. Nick was simply great in explaining concepts in simple and easy to understand manner. He kept free from jargons which generally scares away beginners, and was down to earth. Keep up the good work! I plan to pursue an advanced course.

The mobile experience could be optimized. When I get to the end of a lecture on my iPhone, the text of the exercise is so small it's unreadable (and that's on a 7+). I also didn't see a good way to go to the next lecture without going back out to the dashboard. Do you have a follow-up course? This did a great job of saying, "This is a hammer, this is a screwdriver, etc." but when you're done, you still can't build a house (or even a shed). We need a course to show us how to start using these tools to build stuff. Well done!

I am giving Nick 4.5 stars because he is clearly passionate about swift and he teaches his material very well. The reason he did not get 5 stars is because I think the course is a bit mis marketed. There was no new material for me in this course and that was a bit disappointing. If you are completely new to swift and coding, this is an ideal starting spot. Any C or related language experience and you will be twiddling your thumbs until lecture 81 or thereabouts. Nick, if this was a level 101 course, it did its job. If you come out with a 102 or 201, etc. level course, I will sign up. Thanks!!

I took this course because even though I'm not new to programming (I've been working professionally with Microsoft languages for over 20 years) I have zero experience with Swift and writing apps for Apple platforms. So I decided to approach it as a complete programming newbie, so that I could see how Swift syntax differs from what I'm used to. From that point of view, I found this course to be very useful. Nick covers the absolute basics of programming in a clear way that a total beginner will understand and not be intimidated by. Obviously there are a lot of elements of writing software that are not covered here and other courses would be necessary, but this is a great starting point.
