Course Description
What UX struggles would you love to end?
Do you want to stop the endless cycle of rework to satisfy stakeholders’ moving targets?
Would you like to play a role in creating requirements instead of having them handed to you like written law?
Are you tired of delivering products with UX defects you know could have been avoided?
Do you wish there was a way to get managers to agree to UX work at the start of the project, instead of tacking it on at the end, when it’s too late?
If you answered YES to any of those questions, you’re in the right place. I created this course specifically to end the vicious cycle too many developers and product teams are trapped in: vague requirements they had no hand in creating, constant rework and a never-ending stream of new (and changing) requirements.
See, I’ve been there myself. In nearly 30 years of working with organizations of all sizes in nearly every industry, I know that cycle all too well. I know what it’s like to try and roll the “UX rock” up that hill only to have your stakeholders or managers or clients roll it back down.
No more debate about when UX work should happen.
I know the pain of fighting to get UX included at the start of a project all too well. And I also know that it’s entirely possible to put an end to it.
UX Requirements Made Simple will show you how to get a seat at the requirements table, open the minds and ears of your managers or clients, and see a massive change in both the quality of requirements and the success of the delivered product.
You’ll see how easy it is to quickly integrate strategic UX validation into an existing requirements process — without the need for additional time, money or resources. Here’s just some of what you’ll learn:
Poor methods for requirements that rely on a broken engineering process — and a better, simpler set of methods that get to clarity and value quickly.
Why what users say they need isn’t what they actually need (and how to tell the difference).
Poor requirements tools that address task completion instead of success — and a smarter set of tools that focus your work squarely on desired outcomes.
How to get managers or clients (or your team) to ask the right questions, instead of solution jumping.
How to create contextual use scenarios that tell the real story of the user’s journey from start to finish — and extract relevant functional needs and elements that make up valuable requirements.
It’s simple, it’s straightforward, and it works.
Not because I say it does — but because the Enterprise teams I’ve taught to use these methods have gotten the results I’m talking about. It works because more than 140,000 students (yes, that’s a real number) tell me that my courses have changed the work they do for the better.
Why? Because I deal in software development reality instead of UX fantasy. Perfect situations where we can do these well-funded deep dives into UX research don’t exist for a vast majority of development teams, and I’m really tired of hearing everyone pretend otherwise. So everything I deliver is based in reality, in the less-than perfect world most of us live in.

For more than 30 years, I've helped organizations build better products and helped the people behind those products become more effective at what they do.
Over 400,000 students around the world have taken my courses across multiple learning platforms, but the number I'm proudest of isn't an enrollment statistic. It's the number of students who've told me they finally understand why things happen the way they do inside product teams, and how to navigate them with confidence.
My career has taken me from startups to Fortune 100 companies, healthcare organizations, financial institutions, and federal government agencies. I've worked with companies like Google, Meta, Broadridge, Kroll, Johns Hopkins and many others, as well as organizations including the U.S. Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Those experiences shaped how I teach.
Most courses focus on process: the steps, the deliverables, the frameworks, the tools.
Those things do matter — but they're rarely what determines whether a product succeeds.
The biggest challenges I've seen over three decades aren't usually technical. They're misunderstandings. Misaligned priorities. Poor communication. Unclear goals. Decisions made without evidence. Teams working hard... but not together.

Was good at the start, but towards the end it feels like its more like guess-work, than actual UX focused, data driven choices to generate requirements. Feels like a big chunk of actual user study is missing.

Joe Natoli UX Requirements course very useful, as these days every Organization and every company right from Brick & Mortar is towards Digitized way of doing business and every company has website and app based way of doing business and all the required details needed w.r.t. UX Requirements are very well covered in this course. 5/5 for UX Requirements made simple. Very Insightful one Thanks, Vijay

I found the overall explanation easy to follow, providing a clear understanding of where to start and what steps to take. Although I don’t personally generate requirements, I am involved in site development, and I could see that the issues the trainer mentioned are real challenges I’ve observed with clients. It would have been incredibly helpful to have taken this training earlier to better assist them in navigating these challenges. You will not become an expert after completing the course, but you will gain general knowledge to get you started. I would recommend it.

This course was very useful in understanding requirements and I shouldn't say "gather" anymore, but to generate requirements. Joe's sense of humor makes the content fun to learn and remember for later. It took me more than the mentioned time to finish this course as I took notes on paper. I would totally recommend taking notes as they will prove to be super helpful in the future.

This course allowed me to reframe a set of requirements that was handed to me by stakeholders and programmers for a complex and risky project. When I presented the UX-focused requirements, we understood that nobody knew what we were doing and most importantly WHY we were doing it. I was able to align multiple departments divided by internal politics and unsaid resentments by simply illustrating how little we knew about our users with a contextual user scenario. Being able to make them understand how user needs and business needs need to be mutually beneficial was the cherry on top. Highly recommended!

Yes. I need to rework some modules of an enterprise system and I needed to start from somewhere. Joe Natoli is one of the only people I know that talks strategically about such topics. So I came back to take this course that I bought a few years ago and refresh my memory and do the exercises, to be more prepared for my task at hand. I am always looking for Joe’e new courses and also go back to courses I already took from his offerings. Thanks Joe for helping us finding our ways through these tasks.

I like how the teacher explained concepts and provides a follow up example for students to practice. However, it would be better if the example could be more. I am still a little bit confused about writing functional needs, may have to watch the videos over and over again to know how I can use it in the real world projects. Overall, it is worth it, and I have developed new understanding to user needs that I have not thought of before .

This course gives me a new perspective as a software developer in the early stages of defining the scope and requirements of a software product. It's a hard pill to swallow, however nowadays(it's not like it wasn't important before though), putting the user experience first gives an edge to software products, considering that the market gets crowded of solutions similiar to those you have to offer in this day and age. Great course and I'm excited for learning and using the knowledge of this and other Joe's courses on udemy to become a developer with a profile of user experience under my belt.

Being an absolute beginner, this course served my purpose. Joe teaches how to think, what to think about, and offers tools to help that process when in comes to UX requirements. This is not a place that offers ready-made tools. This is a place that teaches you how to create/amend tools for the situation at hand, by using some simple, yet effective ideas to stimulate thinking in the right direction. I learnt a ton of valuable information, I recommend it to all beginners.

As a UX designer with nearly 10 years of experience I can tell you that Joe never disappoints. So many articles, books and talks never come with practical frameworks or real world examples. Joe's material ticks all the boxes because he's not chasing trends or trying to sound clever. Just a good sensible and practical approach to design.
