Our take
Based on the ratings of 4,950 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a project-first introduction to Houdini's simulation tools: pyro, flip fluids, explosions, rigid bodies, particles, vellum, sand and snow, oceans. Across 194 lectures and about 18 hours, the description promises no presentations, just building effects, and reviewers agree it is a beginner course. The audience list says anyone who wants to learn VFX from scratch, and that matches what students report. Game developers get the Houdini basics only; the description is upfront that it does not cover engine integration.
Students praise Raffi Bedross for calm, clear explanations that repeat key concepts, and several say he made difficult topics feel simple. The Q&A section gets credit too; reviewers say questions get answered. The complaints are consistent. A chunk of the syllabus is marked legacy or outdated, and one reviewer notes you have to let those older videos play to earn the certificate. Two reviewers mention mistakes left in the videos. Some lessons lean on presets rather than building nodes by hand, VEX is barely touched, and a one-star review calls it a tutorial rather than a course because fundamentals get thin coverage.
The last update was November 2024, and a Korean reviewer warns that some lessons run on an older version, so Houdini 20 users should check the nodes as they go. Still, with 4,950 reviews and a 4.4 rating it holds up well, and the Houdini courses listed alongside it are more specialised (vehicle modeling, race tracks, game assets). For a first pass at Houdini FX, this is the one to start with.
Pros
- Calm, repetitive explanations that reviewers say make difficult concepts simple
- Simulation topics end in a real project: chocolate commercial, shark jump, sand and snow
- Instructor answers questions in the Q&A, according to reviewers
- Covers pyro, flip, rigid bodies, particles, vellum and oceans in one 18 hour course
Cons
- Several hours of legacy sections remain and must play through for the certificate
- Leans on presets in places; VEX and per-node fundamentals get little coverage
- Two reviewers report mistakes left in videos, and Houdini 20 users must check for changed nodes
This is an excellent introductory course, and I learned a ton. Great value for the cost!
Marked All Levels but really a beginner course; requirements are just basic computer skills and, in the instructor's words, passion.

This course is very good for beginners who want to learn Houdini FX, but what I feel is lacking is that the tutors are not complete (which is normal because Houdini is very complex) and some of the video tutorials are no longer relevant or outdated, but the instructors always help if there are difficulties or questions, I really appreciate it

This Houdini course is especially for people who want to learn Houdini in an artistically friendly way. It's the best course where you'll learn all about the most important simulation types. The best thing is that you create very cool projects at the end of the simulation topics. The instructor explains Houdini in a very calm and clear way. He has the ability to make topics that you might think are hard to understand accessible. For example, the fluid simulation is, for me, the highlight of the course; I loved it. Personally, I hope the instructor updates or creates another Houdini course I would definitely be happy. :D

This course is amazing. I understood so much with it, it is perfect for those who want to start Houdini and have the will to learn, but some things to know: 1- Houdini isn't an easy program, in some cases you'll need to re-do some stuff to understand it. This is totally normal. 2- There are few mistakes in some videos that may disorientate novice people, but I think it is a good thing: To see where the mistakes are and what they do/don't do is a good way to improve: Houdini isn't easy, evey information (false or correct) is important. 3- This is not a Total/Full explanation of every parameter in Houdini (otherwise this course would take +70 hours) Raffi did his best to present, explain and especially experiment with the Fundamentals (Pyro, Flip Fluids, Explosions and alot more), he always suggest to play with the parameters, it is the only effective way to improve. 4- If you're hard stuck, dont panic and search in the Question section, because the few times I got stuck the community and Raffi's patience helped me. Thank you Raffi for this course! Thanks to you I became a Houdini addict and will dive deep in it, a Rabbit Hole!

NO DOUBT, it is a perfect training for beginners, but I expected each node to be explored ! A lot of presets using in this course, but for a better comprehension, I would have preferred to see manually each node, but as I said, it is an excellent course for beginners ! So, now, I'm waiting from the teacher a new course for INTERMEDIATE levels with more ambitious tuto, like destruction building for example + integration of this shot in a reel life, similar to the Andrew Kramer tutorials !

I completed the entire course in about 2 month, a few hours a week, using Houdini apprentice 18.5.462. Raffi did a great job of introducing us to a lot of the basic effects that are possible in this complex SW. I like that each class quickly builds on the previous class and Raffi moves at a fast pace demanding all of your attention. Having the video is priceless to being able to slow down, stop, and repeat each topic to fully understand the actions. My only criticism is that a number of the topics are outdated at this point and don't work at all like they did on 15.X or 16.X versions. Specifically the attributes that are assigned to objects is completely different as well as a number of the RBD topics. Overall an excellent fast paced beginners level intro to the power of Houdini. You will be blown away starting with the first class! Highly recommend this as a great place to start. Bootcamp as the name implies!

I liked the pace of the course and for someone just being introduced to Houdini, I found it very valuable in learning how Houdini works and how powerful the software is. There is a great use of the shelf materials and a wide variety of tools were demonstrated. I wish there was a little more explanation on procedural modeling- say generating a series of buildings/houses bases off of several different parameters, or going in-depth on how to use VEX operators in conditional modeling that can be applied to any geometry. Overall, this course focused more on the extensive use of simulations that Houdini has to offer.

This was very helpful, as mentioned in comments I would suggest updating some of the tutorials or providing advice on the differences you will encounter with newer versions of Houdini. I also felt some could have been re-edited slightly as you make changes after suggesting rendering in one video when you begin the next requiring rerendering. If you can just put a text note when this happened it would prevent people having to rerender. Thanks you for your hard work though much appreciated

The lessons are a good summer of what and how to achieve certain results and as such a good entry into Houdini. A lot of times I am missing the deeper why and explaining the background. The recordings themselves while ok, also could have used some more preparation or in some cases re-recording / editing. Another thing to be aware of is that language and cultural difference will influence the perception of the tutor and student.

This is by far the best course i've ever taken for VFX. I've used Houdini before..but this instructor explains what some nodes actually do in depth. Mr Bedross also teaches you key board short cuts to help speed up your work flow. His style of teaching makes Houdini less intimidating when learning the program.

Great course, I started from here and could make some demo projects, I can't wait for author to add more videos and announce them, he added Vellum tutorials and did not tell anyone, I could not get idea what is the course about and when did he add this. Would be good if he can update the forum.
