Vehicle Modeling in Houdini 16.5 - SciFi Dropship (Udemy.com)
Learn how to utilize Houdini's Procedural toolset to create Vehicle Models

Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,214 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.
A free, ten-hour modeling course that builds a single sci-fi dropship from first blockout to a game engine, paid for by Side Effects Software. Across 73 lectures the syllabus moves through blocking, detailing the body and engines, landing gear, retopology, UVs and vertex colors, then assembles the ship in Unity 2018 and Unreal 4. It is aimed at people who already know the Houdini interface and can wire a basic node graph, and who want to see procedural techniques applied to hard-surface work rather than effects. One reviewer coming from Blender says it finally made procedural modeling make sense.
Students rate the teaching highly. Kenny at Indie-Pixel gets praise for explaining why things are done, not just how, and more than one reviewer calls it one of the best Houdini modeling tutorials online. The complaints are consistent. The course was recorded in Houdini 16.5 and last updated in January 2019, so some nodes have changed, and students on Houdini 20.5 or starting after 2022 report having to find modern equivalents. Texturing in Substance Painter is set up but never shown, one reviewer could not find the support files, and the Unity and Unreal sections assume familiarity with those engines. One reviewer notes the non-commercial Apprentice build cannot export the finished model.
For the price, none of that is a dealbreaker. With over 22,000 students and 1,200 reviews at 4.8 stars, it is the vehicle-focused option among the FX bootcamps and race-track courses it sits beside. Go in expecting a 2019 workflow that needs some adapting, and plan on a separate Substance Painter resource if you want a textured result. As a free, project-based introduction to hard-surface modeling in Houdini, it is easy to recommend.
Pros
- Free, with over 22,000 students and a 4.8 rating from about 1,200 reviews.
- One complete dropship project, from blockout through retopo, UVs and vertex colors to Unity and Unreal.
- Reviewers say the instructor explains why things are done, not just which buttons to press.
- A Blender user says it made procedural modeling finally make sense.
Cons
- Recorded in Houdini 16.5 and last updated January 2019; some nodes have changed and need modern equivalents.
- No Substance Painter texturing section, and one reviewer hit normal-bake problems the course never covers.
- Support files are hard to find and the engine sections assume Unity or Unreal knowledge.
I was a little skeptical Houdini could efficiently be used for more complex models but now I see it can be. And it is fun!
Labeled beginner, but it expects basic Houdini interface and node graph skills plus general 3D concepts like edges, faces and UVs.

Course Description
Throughout this course we will look at ways in which we can begin to insert procedural modeling workflows, using Houdini 16.5, into your everyday modeling pipeline. We will learn how we can speed up our traditional vehicle modeling tasks using Houdini Digital Assets, procedural techniques, and Houdini's surface operators. By the end of the course, we will have walked through how to create the Dropship model, how to generate the terrain seen in the demo, and how to get the Dropship set up inside both Unity 2018 and Unreal 4. Best part is, since Side Effects Software sponsored this course, the course is free!

I began this whole journey through art. When in high school I developed a
very strong interest in drawing and 2D animation. From there I began
to get enveloped into the work of 3D. After Graduating High school I
attended the Art Institute of Seattle. There I gained my AA degree in
Computer animation. I interned at Surreal Software, then moved onto
working on the very first version of Xbox at Microsoft. I worked on NFL
fever 2000, NHL Rivals 2002, and Inside Drive. From there I have worked
at Activision, again at Microsoft, my own companies Creative TD and
Ozone Interactive, and am now exploring Interactive Arts experiences at Indie Pixel. There have been many things
along the way but my love is in 3D, real-time arts, shaders, procedural
content creation, math, modeling, texturing, and helping others through
teaching.

Great stuff for getting familiar with working inside of Houdini. Some of it is a little out of date as of Houdini 20.5, but I think that's a good thing as it figuring out how to get the same results in the current version helps increase your understanding of Houdini. I just wish there was a section on setting up the model inside for work once brought inside of Substance Painter.

Course was good. I learned a ton but i also felt like some very important things were left out. I understand the course was free but I wouldve paid to see the substance workflow, How to trouble shoot crappy normal bakes and other things similar to what I ran into while completing this course. I didnt end up texturing my own model because of some issues with the normals being garbage. Would have liked this course to have a Q&A section so the students could help each other out a bit. All in all this being free It was way better than expected.

Excellent tutorial for modeling, I love it, very well explained, instructor talks very clear and decent speed, specially for people like me which origin language is not english. About unity and unreal section is a plus very good, I would like to add one more section for substance painter to see the transition after de UV section and maybe a link after the last video for more tutorials related with this one. In general, special thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have a personal interest to apply all this for my own vehicles projects, keeping in mind I can make mistakes while modeling or modifying the body, even choosing the right paint color, instead or before doing it on real sheet metal. I will share the final results promise somewhere in here. Thanks a lot for your time. Cheers!!

No nonsense, straight to the point education. The speaker is clear and concise and explains every move he makes in detail without droning on. He helps the user create tools that are versatile and can apply to any type of project. Tons of knowledge here that you need to know to create clean and interesting meshes. He takes large daunting concepts and condenses them into bite sized lessons that leave an impact on the user regarding the importance of each step. I went from knowing nothing to having the confidence to create my own projects just a few lessons in. By the end you will have a firm grasp on modelling in Houdini as well as the overall way the program behaves as a whole. I would highly recommend this course.

I just finished the class and I can say that it was an amazing class. The instructor explains everything perfectly and you learn many useful techniques to speed up the workflow. I am definitely going to take more classes that indie pixel puts out there because they are amazing. I would really enjoy that in the future to maybe put together a class that focuses just on substance because that is another software that I would like to get my hands on as well!

Clearly one of the best modeling courses for Houdini, in-depth explanation and everything. I want to give a detailed constructive feedback. Good Points: - In detail explanation of each modelling step and never getting tired of repeating it over and over. - Using drawings for references in the body part, helped a lot to visualize which approach he took and why. - Organizing the course by building the basic shapes then detailing every shape. - A lot of take away stuff and nice handy shortcuts and presets. - The model he built looked nice and attractive and detailed enough for basic/complex modelling procedures. - Very clear accent and very good speed (not too fast/not too slow). Bad Points: - I wish we saw a reference to the engines and the landing gear while building them, that he would alternate between Houdini and the reference to show which part he's aiming at and why he's using that particular method, it would have been visually better to understand. Sometimes I just sat down till the end of each part to understand what we are aiming for and other times I got lost in the middle. - The texturing was really quick and not detailed enough like the modelling part, i think that's because he did the materials part at substance painter. - I wish we did the materials and rendering in Houdini as well, not a lot of tutorials explore materializing in depth in Houdini, or at least we get a sneak peak at the workflow in Substance Painter which might attract some of us to the software. - Sometimes the voice was very low, i had to increase volume to the max, but that was not a big issue. Great Course, thanks so much, i enjoyed it and it deserves a 5-stars rating!

just finished this gem, big thanks to the instructor i absolutlely loved this course, i learned a ton, bit disepointed you didn't show us how you created the textures in substance painter and the audio quality was rather low but the course was free so why am i complaining? at the beginning i thought you were going a bit fast, i had to do some research along the way but thats just because i didnt have a lot of experience so i had no idea wat e.g. "normals" even were. but in the end i think i learned something in every video and you intruduced me to a lot of very interesting concepts. cheers to you kenny.

I have been doing FX on the worlds biggest movie productions for 4 years now using Houdini. This course really got me realizing that Houdini is so applicable for more than just FX. Kenny is doing a fantastic job balancing tips and tricks, with regular "houdini beginner" stuff. So even for a guy like me who is quite experienced in a lot of areas of Houdini, this was a course worth the watch. Lastly I want to say that I am impressed with how Kenny can simplify Houdini, which can be a quite complex program. This course is exactly what beginners need, to not be intimidated, and I personally loved that even experienced people can pickup value from this.

The trainer knows his stuff. Its a great opportunity to finally get to see some of these ideas put together so well. Get the author to MAKE MORE Houdini and Unity Courses!!!! I have read some of the other reviews. The students appear to nit-pick at basic issues... example (I know another way to do what you said to do your way???). This course is one of the most comprehensive online courses out on internet as of late 2018. Stop complaining, and be happy that you found this Gem!!! This is a go to course to get up-to speed with Procedural Modelling in Houdini 16.5. Yes you could use other Polygon Modelling tools, but if you plan to target Procedural Modelling, then by doing this course, you will be shown many of the new/up-to-date workflows for working with Houdini, timesaving tips, etc. Remember, you can make procedural worlds with Houdini. This course however is howing how do most everything you'd do in a game studio to author digital assets in Houdini, with the added bonus on how to make things really shine, in both Unity and Unreal Engine. AND ITS FREE :) Great work to the SideFX Team, and thank you Kenny... More Please!!! I would pay to do this training as its really hard to find content that's going to have you up and running after you finish the cource. Great work!!!
