In this course, Penny teaches all the invaluable skills you will require to interact with the computer graphics render pipeline using Shader Graph in Unity from scratch using her internationally acclaimed teaching style and knowledge from over 30 years of working with games and graphics. Through detailed descriptions and hands-on workshops, you'll learn all you need to know about rendering queues, vector mathematics, graphics buffers, colour theory, 3D meshes, texture mapping, lighting models, and much more.
Contents and Overview
After diving right in and creating your very first Shader Graph shader from scratch, you delve into the fundamental concepts of creating an unlit shader and discover how colours can be mixed for surface effects, and how to put an external texture onto a game object.
Following this, you will examine a variety of lighting models and how lights and surface textures can influence the final look of a render. In this part, you will develop shaders with different lighting and investigate physically-based rendering that caters for metallic surfaces and considers world reflections. The remainder of the course concentrates on building up your essential mathematics skills related to creating shaders and focussing on the essentials that you can take and customise for your own needs.
Finally, there's an advanced water shader section on adding special effects to water surfaces such as depth colour, waves, surface foam, and splash particles.
What students are saying about Penny's other shader courses:
This course is amazing! Penny has got to be, hands down, one of the best instructors on game development, Unity, and C#! In the span of three hours, I have learned so much that it rivals my graduate program!
Best shader course I've come across. There are enough and more tutorials on youtube to teach you how to develop your own shaders, but nothing falls into the class of Penny's tutorials. They are clear and to the point. Really happy about this one.
Wow! Thank you so much! If there were 10 stars - this course would deserve it. Going from absolutely knowing nothing about Shader writing to have a profound understanding about it.
I wanted to let you know that I just finished your shader course and thought it was fantastic. It was a pleasure to take the course and finally get a grasp on a topic that seemed so foreign to me not so long ago. Your teaching style and personality really worked for me and made learning a breeze!

Excellent, highly recommend. You will learn so much, and be able to translate lots of concepts you probably already know from programming into math for visual effects. It actually took me quite a while to finish, because every other lesson, I got ideas to incorporate concepts I already knew from coding to make the visual effects even better! This course puts a lot of power in your hands, especially if you are a solo developer who often has to rely on the assets of others for your graphics. Definitely pick this up, must-have!

If you have ANY interest in 3D graphics, TAKE THIS COURSE. The name of this course should be swapped to "Your Ultimate Guide to Shader Graph ESSENTIALS" because holy crap did I learn a lot. I've not only bettered my knowledge with unity, BUT ALSO Blender (which I've been using for roughly 5 years!) It's been a long journey, and while I'll still be coming back to use this a reference, it's incredibly fulfilling to finally have an idea as to what's happening under the hood of a render pipeline. Penny, you're a lovely instructor and I hope to take more classes from Holistics 3D soon! I'll be sure to @ you when I come up with something good!

This course is excellent and easy to follow especially for absolute beginner like me. I knew some basics in unity from unityLearn and I was intimidated by shaders and the whole process of it, but this course was definitely above my expectations and it's the first course I've actually enjoyed going through and I've learned so much and enjoyed every lesson!! And I love how the instructor explained each process and every step in depth! Definitely gonna check more of Penny's courses because this one was amazing!!

I have been working in 3D for 29 years, and recently, due to a new project that lacked a shader engineer, I decided to brush up on my shader knowledge. This course was certainly helpful, but there are some essential topics missing. Notably, it lacks coverage of performance optimization, best practices, shader limitations on mobile GPUs, shader instancing, parallax and SSS shaders, blur effects, shaders for UI elements, and the use of baked lightmaps. I also encountered issues with certain resources; for instance, the advanced water project had significant problems. I could fix some of them after restarting the computer and setting up a new Unity URP project, but still some issues are left (logical problems like the foam tutorial: You see foam always, not just from a specific angle. Fresnel is totally useless here. The steam particle effect shader does not really work. Alpha and color over lifetime is ignored completely). Additionally, relying on third-party resources, such as textures from a website, is not ideal. One of the textures was unavailable, which, while not a deal-breaker, is something that shouldn't happen in a professional tutorial. Also, requiring users to create accounts on third-party websites can be off-putting. Fortunately, I already had an account with textures.com.

This course was a bit slow for me. I'm coming more or less directly from the course "Shader Development from Scratch for Unity with Cg" - which actually has _more_ content but only like 25% of the run time. Because Shader Graph is actually easier to grasp, too (being a node based environment), this led to me running through much of the content here at 2x speed. I won't blame the course for all of that, because of course all that lighting theory now was a repetition. Still, I'd have preferred a faster pace. I did make the full final "sewer water" exercise, with some improvisation too, and that exercise was really well-chosen and let me practice a lot of things and included almost everything that came before (and also had me run into and overcome some limitations of Shader Graph, like there being no possibility to have multiple render passes). So 4.25 stars, rounding up because I love the teaching style.

Just finished the course and I've got to say this far surpassed my expectations! I came into this with exactly no context for shaders (shader graph included!) and I felt I actually learned a ton. The depth and pace of the content is excellent. I will note however, that I do have a solid understanding of 3D math and vectors which certainly helped in understanding some of the theory particularly around lighting models. To that end, I do wish there was a little bit more theory and math in these lectures - at times I found myself a little uncertain or confused about what a specific node was doing and I feel that covering a little bit more of the math would have made some concepts less ambiguous.

Minor criticism is that the final section of the project had a less organised pacakage you were expected to work in. It had a lot of errors that you will have to remove from lots of gameobjects that seemed to be pulled in from a side project. Also the 'plane' mesh for WaterPool where she will demonstrate the differences in the amount of vertices duing the final section appears not to be within the contents of the package. Other than that, besides creating the shaders which was really awesome we didn't get to see what penny had hinted out early in the beginning of the course which was a lesson on how to interact with the materials by code. Now she does cover shader graph coding a little, but alas, nothing in C# and the only reason that became a disappointment was because she mentioned it early on in the course, so it got my hopes up thinking it's covered later. The awesome stuff about the overall course is first and foremost the teacher. Penny is exceptionally smart, and her team is also supportive, helping out anybody stuck! Another major win is that the shaders we create reuses a lot of techniques that you learn from the beginning which helps really cement the knowledge better as we repeat the process a lot. Overall a 4.5/5 course, well done holistic3D team, as a fellow australian, that's +1 from me right there. Awesome work.

Amazing! As a beginner with a little understanding of how math works i understood the basics of how effects like fresnel, voronoi, scene depth and color can work together to create effects like force shield, water and refractions of it. Shader graph gives you a comfortable tool to try it without to write a code. But still you can add your own code into the shader. Penny, like always, did a great job to explain how the nodes works and some of background basics. I recommend to watch Math for Computer Graphics before to get more out of the course. My recommendation to get it and big thanks to Penny! :)

Enjoyed this course. I tried couple other shader courses, but could never get the grasp of many terms and principles. This course helped me a lot to understand them and be able to create my own shaders. The only thing which was frustrating was the description of the challenges in the second half, where I did not understand what I'm being asked for in a challenge or was misguided by the description. For Example, in the last challenge, where I thought I have to somehow connect color from the pool to the waterfall shader but had to just use my own color in the waterfall shader. Overall, great course, and I'm happy I did that. Thanks, Penny!
