Aside from being an artist as long as I can remember I started offering a few tutorials on Youtube. Little did I know that by teaching people the fundamentals of art and anatomy i'd begin a new dimension to my career. Being a working freelance illustrator with a youtube channel is hard work, and I wouldn't change a thing. I steadily expanded my work from clients who needed branding to doing work on indie games and apps. i enjoy helping artists and non artist achieve that next level. The road to artistic expression and freedom is paved with hard work and dedication. There are setbacks and monsters to slay , but the rewards are great.

I love retro video games and old school pixel art, so I thought that this was a good course for me. I'm currently a web and graphic design student, but I have an interest in game design as well. This is quite a lengthy course, so it does cover a lot of topics in regards to pixel art. It's nice being able to go back and look over some of the lessons again, especially considering how much was covered in this course. This is the second course that I have taken with this instructor. I find his delivery to be engaging, and I like how he goes into depth with the topic. I highly recommend his courses.

[Review's review] Honestly I was wrong when I said the things I said below here. I think I should leave that there for reference. What I've realized since completing this course is that pixel art comes in many different forms, and different people do different things with their knowledge of pixel art. Instead of trying to learn from how he did things, why he did things and internalizing it all, I only saw that he did things I didn't want to do in my art, and then I closed my mind to the course. What I originally posted was not the fault of the teacher, but of my own ignorance. There were things I could have and did learn from this course, but I didn't focus on those things for some reason. I just wanted to apologize for the over generalizations that I dished out below. I've recently realized that art, and really everything else, mean different things to different people and that all of those things are important to learn about. [First review] It was about pixel art, but seemed more like generic graphic arts, he constantly referred to larger as better, which is not the case. Good pixel art is usually 64 bit or smaller. It can be bigger, but it seemed more like he was painting on the canvas instead of paying attention to each individual pixel, which is what makes pixel art what it is. This course is graphic arts, and he shouldn't have called it pixel art. (I really feel like I mistakenly thought I knew everything about the subject when, in reality, I only knew a little about it, and I didn't realize that learning only one course on here isn't nearly enough to gain mastery of the art) Ps The course was good because he showed us a lot of examples of his art style. I didn't realize how much value that held until after the fact.

Its mostly a Photoshop-paint-along-course. Not a single in depth part over anything theroretical. One example: A 10 minute piece over colors is simply showing of an Adobe application and how to click. Sometimes he's using Asprite, but it looks like he is using it for the first time ever. His main mantra is: "It ok to make mistakes!" and of course he's right if you are learning, but I really don't want to see my teacher make mistake after mistake after mistake.

Really like this instructor so far, calm voice and incredibly patient. I relax with his teaching style that's not overly ambitious as what you would expect from youtube tutorials on the same subjects.

the instructor provides a sufficient amount of insight on where the mistakes can be made, and humbly admits the mistakes if made. it provides for a great learning opportunity.

I'm only just getting started, but I enjoy the instructor so far. You can tell he knows what he is doing, is very professional, has a voice that keeps you focused instead of putting you to sleep, etc... I look forward to seeing this course through and check out his other courses. I will update this with a full review when I'm done.

I liked the slow pace and sections of the course where the result of the section was something concrete (like a tileset or similar). The instructor is awesome, explanations are clear, also quick to respond to questions. The only critic I have is that some sections feel a bit thrown together without a clear focus. I recommend to anyone who is a beginner and wants to learn how to approach game pixel art and tiled pixel art in general.

I have been having difficulty finding courses about specifically making game are. They're all about how various programs work rather than how to think about approaching the artwork. The teacher seems comprehensive and engaged.

I'm learning more about the tools that I would need to use to create my assets for the games that I want to make and it is helping me speed up my creative process.

This course is made for someone like me because Richard gives me the confidence to try and fail and learn from my failures that no other instructor could have done, no matter how good they are in drawing pixel art.
